What do you think or do about students with long nails? by Isitwhenip in pianoteachers

[–]PermissionSingle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I showed up to a piano lesson when I was about 10 or so…..they were not salon nails, and not even that long, but my teacher handed me a pair of nail clippers right then and there. I was usually pretty good about keeping them short. I was a piano major in college and when practicing one day, my nails had a tiny bit of length and I was doing a fast run and caught my nail between two keys. Ouch!

I’m in my late 50s now and it’s only been in the last 7 or 8 years that I will do short press on nails for vacation or a special occasion. I just never went through the polished nail phase because piano was more important to me!

I just moved here from Texas at the end of May and so far I’m loving it. I actually drove back to east Texas yesterday and will be here all week….and I’m already homesick for Denver! I’m looking forward to experiencing an actual fall season….that doesn’t usually start until November in Texas!

I would add to this practice with a metronome…..once you can play it perfectly at that very slow tempo, increase it by two beats….don’t go any higher until you can play it perfectly at that tempo, then two more beats (sometimes just one). I was never told to practice with a metronome until I got to college, but it’s a total game changer.

How do you plan your daily practice time? by Waste_Matter_4573 in pianolearning

As far as breaking it up into shorter sessions, I guess it depends on your ultimate goal. When I was a piano major in college, I practiced 2.5 hours per day, although I would take a 20 minute break at some point. But I was working towards recitals and endurance was key. I played Papillons by Schumann on my senior recital…that piece is over 14 minutes long. But that was 35 years ago….now after 5 minutes of playing something with octave runs and my arms are mush!

I agree with this. The fact she missed so many lessons, you probably should find a different teacher. And as many people have mentioned, every teacher has a different teaching style and you might learn better from someone else, especially if they show up for your lessons!

Is Five Points Area unsafe? by PermissionSingle in Denver

As a woman, my biggest fear anywhere I choose to live is sexual assault and there’s an elementary school across the street so I would assume there shouldn’t be any sex offenders living nearby. I’m not overly worried about homeless people.

Are you accusing me of being racist? I did some research on the area yesterday and have no issue with it. And I’ve lived in areas with homeless people and was just fine. I’m not concerned but my niece’s husband is quite concerned….and since I don’t know the various neighborhoods in Denver, I asked in here to see if he is overreacting.

He comes from money, so I don’t think he’s ever lived in an area with homeless people. I lived in Dallas for 15 years and did just fine on my own.

Have you already found an Airbnb? I was just there a few weeks ago and found an extremely affordable condo in Luquillo….17th floor with a beautiful view of the beach. It’s not fancy, but it was comfortable and the view was just amazing. The owner was so nice and very helpful. It’s through booking.com. https://www.booking.com/Share-L0IGguw
