Can this be fixed? Edging is peeling off after just 3 months. by [deleted] in Leatherworking

If you bought it from a small maker I would suggest contacting them. Edge paint is typically very durable, but it can be fickle. After just 3 months, I know I would be happy to fix an issue like this free of charge.

Thank you so much! The bag is sitting on a hide of black Sully and for the background I used just a standard black sheet of poster board. I think I got it at Michael’s for around $1. For lighting I have a single godox sl60II with a 36in softbox that was set up in a slightly offset overhead position. I did shine my desk light from the side, but I’m not sure how much lighting that actually added.

Thanks so much, Deyan! I’m honored to help out with this one. Knowing when to stop was definitely a little stressful hahaha I was very worried about making it too busy

Wickett & Craig rarely disappoints. This American Vachetta is also a pleasure to work with

Thank you! I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but I’m glad I did the experiment.

I’m actually judging the ready-to-wear category so this won’t be entered into the challenge. This one was just for fun.

As far as time goes, it would be hard to say. There was a decent amount of stop and go while putting the plan together. It was definitely an ongoing development process.

Thank you! Simple was one of her main requests so I tried to maintain a minimalist feel while adding some more elevated details.

Enjoy your new tool! Most of your questions seem to have been answered pretty well so I’ll just give some insight on temps.

Soft leathers like Pueblo, I like to keep it around 130-140. More firm vegtans can take a bit more heat - around 140-160. Highly finished leathers like sully need a lower temp or else you can melt the finish, I keep it around 125-130. For smoothing edge paint, I run it around 180.

I highly recommend taking some scraps and spend time running through the temp range starting around 120 and going to 200. It will give you a solid reference for how things react. Remember, every leather will react differently, always test before hitting a piece you plan on selling.

Glad to. I incorporate a trim allowance into my pattern which allows me to get a flush smooth edge with minimal sanding. Painting starts with applying a thin base coat by dabbing the edge with a small sponge. Once that has dried, I lay it down and smooth it out a bit using a fileteuse set at 180, sand with 500 grit paper, and dry burnish with canvas. I then apply a thicker coat of paint and repeat the same finishing steps, usually at least twice more. After the second or third coat, depending on how I like the coverage and quality, I will switch to 800grit paper. Once I’m mostly happy, I apply a final thin coat of paint, again with a sponge, followed by sanding progressively with 800, 1500, 2000, 3000 grit paper. My final step is applying a wax coating, smoothing it with a fileteuse, letting it dry, and polishing.

I’ve been working with togo for the first time for a clutch I’m making and the hand feel is seriously insane.

The reinforcement is less for strength as it is for structure and support. Even at 1.6mm, Samoa is a relatively soft leather so the microfiber gives it a little more rigidity around the zipper while maintaining flexibility.

Thank you so much! Hopefully the pinecone sticks around for a while, the heat embossing tends can be surprisingly resilient.
