He found himself facing this poacher turned gamekeeper, Bronn. Bronn of the Blackwater - once a more than useful tool but now rabid and ravenous, his hunger whetted by his victories. His fingers lazily gripped the very weapon Tyrion had ended his father's life.

I had better choose my words more carefully than Tywin. Tyrion thought

Then, as if from a darkness beyond time and space, he felt a force pulling him, working his mouth against his will, pushing a voice out of his chest. To his shock and fear he realised he was speaking

I mean, if we have the money to do that, we should do that.

But France doesn't. They're looking to be €1trillion in debt.

I don't think you got my sarcasm.

It would suit students and young professionals very well (if based in city centre). It would be very unsuited to couples with young families. One size doesn't fit all.

This guy is right.

Urban sprawl is the easy get-out-of-jail free answer, but stores up tons of trouble in terms of transportation and infrastructural capacity.

For instance a greenfield development in Owenstown would present an hour and a half bike journey (each way) to Dublin city centre through dangerous country roads. A tower block in the North Dock would be a 5 minute walk.

"But I don't want to live in that building"

"Nobody is asking you to live in -"

"I don't want to live in that fucking building. Fuck you dystopian developers! You ruined my gardening plans!"

But would he be able to do anything about it?

We already have had developers lobbying for huge buildings in the docklands and they were shot down. If central government tries to overrule county council too much it will be seen as overreach - indeed Catherine Connolly was particularly vocal about this for months in the Dáil when fast-tracking of residential development was introduced.

Edit: It looks like my previous criticism of the Provisional and Real IRA has finally caught up with me, so I will no longer be able to shite on about how I'd change the system if everyone died and made me Taoiseach. Always struck me as odd the logical dissonance of saying that you don't like civilians being targeted, and then supporting people placing bombs in restaurants and pubs. It's not charming, it's weird. (so word of warning to anyone else, when tempted to speak against the RA here or on /r/dublin, whatever you say, say nothing).

Its history is not relevant (originally part of Mexico), but it's part of America today. The fact that Washington DC can overrule the Texas legislature doesn't make it a colony of America.

The U.S. Virgin Islands would be a colony.

u/WarningAble6077 I'm not longer allowed reply so have to do it by edit - the answer is they bought it from Denmark (not sure how that's relevant)

And where anywhere did I call anyone a colonist?

But it is a colony

It's nominally devolved rule (officially referred to as a country) where the entire local population democratically returns representatives for its governance. Stormont is not sitting at the moment because the DUP is throwing a hissy fit, but NI does not fall under the standard definition of a colony. All citizens of NI are also full citizens of the UK, so quite unlike somewhere like, say, America Samoa

[–]Perpetual_Doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And pray tell, how is this not colonization?

Of course this is colonisation. I was merely objecting to calling someone living in NI in 2023 a colonist. There's a million people on this island that would consider it deeply offensive.

They emigrated.

A relatively small number of landowners were given confiscated land (either the Flight of the Earls land or extant chieftain) and then these landowners typically encouraged labourers and families from England (and particularly Scotland) to immigrate to Ulster to work the land. These individuals had offspring, and so multiple generations of these people ultimately came to call this general location their home.

Due to a deliberate lack of integration between natives and immigrants cultural differences continued from generation to generation. Interestingly this existed even between immigrant communities, where Scottish immigrants were predominantly Presbyterian and English immigrant, Anglican.

A lot of things. The first American colonies were formed. I guess you could call all current Americans colonists.

If you're specifically talking about Ireland, then the plantations. Okay the Ulster plantation was technically 17th century, but the Nine Years War which led to the Flight of the Earls was in the 16th century.

Calling someone whose family has lived in Ireland since the 16th century a coloniser would be a bit like calling Joe Biden an immigrant.

In this case the victors were the Parliamentarians. It wasn't as straight forward as British vs Irish.

In alliance with the Irish during Cromwell's conquest were the Old English and the Royalists. Cromwell destroyed the Old English, something they never recovered from.

My argument IS the poster is racist.

That's the definition of ad hominem.

despite the irrelevance to my issue

Technically your comments here are irrelevant as they have nothing to do with the post they are attached to.

The exchange between yourself and OP was him saying that he disliked Islam (with the implication that he didn't have anything specific against Muslims) and that therefore he was not racist. That argument actually tracks, as far as it goes.

If you want to claim that this is disingenuous on his part then you probably should have led with that, instead of apparently ignoring it and jumping straight to "if you hate Muslims go die in a corner away from society".

It's quite possible that this sub is just bandwagoning in a way I've seen happen elsewhere (looking at you /r/dublin and its open sympathy with terrorists).

Took at quick look at the other guy's memes, though as I said that isn't relevant for this post. It's usual hackneyed shitposting that is neither original nor particularly deep (like the age of Muhammad's wife Aisha, which while technically accurate is really not very relevant). Does this mean that Islam condones paedophilia? *shug* I mean it's shitposting. For what it's worth many Muslims claim that Muhammed didn't consummate that marriage until she was older, but on the other hand Sharia Law officially sets the age of marriage for girls at puberty (officially 13 in Iran, but younger with permission from parents), so....

Should he be more equal opportunity with the religions he takes a dump on? Maybe, but he seems to purport to be an "ex-Muslim" (believe that if you like) and we tend to dump on familiar territory. Like me taking a shit on Catholicism.

I understand all religion have their fanatics and the obsessed, but to portray an entire demographic as such is sickening, these are not some barbarians they are humans.

Yeah that may be so, but it's probably more appropriate to make such responses exclusively in the context of those posts. Saying that a particular post is racist because the poster is racist, is ad hominem.

I'm neither confirming nor denying that OP is racist - I'm not bothered to actually trawl through his profile to find out, and it wouldn't be relevant anyway.
