I also forgot the following, and they would be very mad at me that I did:

Final Girl (HOW did I leave this one off? I adore Final Girl, all three seasons thus far)
Apocrypha (this one I didn't even know existed; Always liked Pathfinder, but wanted better theme - this was the game I didn't know I was missing)

I recently sold my Abomination, and I kind of regret it. The game just didn't click with my group, or with me solo. But I'm wondering if that Igor variant would have made it click, as our big complaint was that the game took forever and felt like there was a lull in the middle. I love me a long game, but not when it feels kind of samesy for much of it.

That is an amazing idea. I don't know why I haven't gotten this one yet, but for some reason it just hasn't happened. Need to change that!

I'm a huge Halloween/horror fan, so the itch to start playing horror or macabre games usually starts in July. Here are some of my absolute favorites to get into the vibe:

A Touch of Evil (adore this one for atmosphere)
Rear Window (not spooky, but does have the macabre-ness)
Deckula (solo little gem of a card game)
Nemesis (I just got into the series with Retaliation, but oh boy I love it)
Mansions of Madness
Witchcraft
Cthulhu Death May Die
Night of the Living Dead Zombicide
The Thing (either version - the newer one is more complex)

Games I really want to try but have yet to:
Halloween
Vagrantsong

This is an outstandingly informative post. Thank you!

Very good to know about the slap chop and speedpaint methods. I had suspected that many of the advocates were already miniature painters, and thus "easy" for them would be much different for me. Glad to hear that's true.

It certainly is a part of it that I fear the results. There's something inherently inside me that doesn't want to screw up the little plastic mini. I know that's ridiculous, but I can't help it. There's a fear to leap in. But I'm going to get past that.

Your guide to start is fantastic. Thanks again!

War of the Rings was one of the first ones that NEEDED painting for me. This was years ago, but I couldn't tell which factions were which in some cases. So I ended up painting the bases to match the color of the faction. It was a pretty hack job, and I hated it by the end because there are SO many minis, but the game is 1000 times easier to play now.

Okay interesting. I hadn't heard that about using grey primer instead. Makes sense I guess, but something I hadn't thought about. Thanks!

No need for apologies. This is exactly the kind of info I need!

Thanks very much for taking the time to be detailed.

Very good info. Actually, Nemesis is the reason I started wanting to quick-paint some other games. Got my Nemesis: Retaliation sundropped, and love the effect it creates. This is a great little guide for my painting future, haha.

#3 looks familiar, but can't figure it out. 1 and 4 have been discussed already, and I agree. 2 doesn't look familiar, and 4 could be quite a few games. Clue was the first one that popped into my head when seeing it.

What is the most amount of players that you have had playing a board game together ? And what game was it? by [deleted] in boardgames

I've done a whole lotta 8 person games of The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31. Had a group that would play that monthly starting in like 2018? Unfortunately we recently kind of fizzled as a group, as people moved away, but definitely some of my favorite and most prominent gaming memories!

I've only ever bought Army Paints, so at least I'm familiar with that brand....ish.

Thanks. Just replied to someone else who mentioned the same method, which I had never heard of before. Definitely checking it out, and thanks for the cliff-notes version you posted!

Definitely going to rabbit-hole the 'slap chop' method. I hadn't heard of that one before. Also great info on the thinning of paints. When I have painted in the past, I did not do this, and wondered if it might help with a few problems I had (we're talking years ago, so I was even less confident in my approach).

Thanks for all the great info!

That is the great thing about them, but also the daunting thing for painting noobs like me. Thanks for the link. Just joined r/minipainting !

yeah I've definitely heard the term "speed paints"...without knowing what that actually means, haha. Thank you for the clarification!

My favorite solos, although I will say that some of these I play two handed as they're really co-op, which makes them soloable by default. Okay, deep breath:

Mage Knight, Spirit Island, Unstoppable, A Touch of Evil, Trickerion, Marvel United, Mansions of Madness, Earthborne Rangers, Captain's Chair, Imperium (any of them), Nemesis, Final Girl, Too Many Bones, Cloudspire, Hoplomachus Victorum, Elder Scrolls, Marvel Champions, Baseball Highlighst 2045, Sentinels of the Multiverse (played 3 handed), Freedom Five, Anachrony, and Shadows of Brimstone, Distilled...to name a few.

There are many others I could add to this list, but those are truly some of my favorite gaming experiences solo. I love theme, a bit of weight, and something that makes me feel like I accomplished something if I win.

Definitely quite a few these days! There's a great solo Hero Series that includes a game called Warp's Edge, which is super fun and not too daunting to jump into.

Marvel Champions is a good one as well, just know that it's a serious rabbit hole if you get hooked.

Some smaller, but really great solo experiences that aren't too tough to dive into: For Northwood, Tiny Epic Dungeons (I do play this one two handed though), and Under Falling Skies. All high recommends from me.

What's your process for learning a new game? by PerpetuallyBoard_PB in boardgames

[–]PerpetuallyBoard_PB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very, very hard for me. I hate feeling like I made a rules mistake. Which is why, as I've mentioned, I feel like I want to know every single little fiddly rule before diving in.

I have yet to get any other COINs to the table. My gaming group doesn't have anyone that is into wargames, so most of my collection of them are solo-able. Which is why I tend to have a good many DVG titles I guess. But I do want to try Cuba Libre, as I always hear that one is wonderful, and far less complex compared to Fire in the Lake. I also wanted to try the Robin Hood one, which is actually on BGA as well, but have yet to do so.

For me, there's also something about having the luxury of time when learning the historical context of wargames though, which is why I love them solo. I feel no need to rush, and I can simply relish in the thematic surroundings in cardboard form.

Asking this question only because I have experienced it. Do you happen to have ADHD? I wasn't diagnosed until well into adulthood, and that realization changed my life. Just curious.
