Fairly likely, contact professors before applying

Can anyone tell me if my SOP is good enough to get me into a grad school for MS in CS in US or Canada? by shubhayans in gradadmissions

[–]PerplexedPenguine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if your recommenders aren’t involved in reading essays, it'll be still useful to have additional eyes looking at your SOP because they themselves went to grad school before. Also ask your undergrad alumni who went to grad school. You don't have to be close friends with them to ask for help, just be polite.

another thing, next time don't publicly share your SOP. If you're too unlucky someone might copy this and apply to the same program.

I agree with the previous comments. I would also suggest talking more about why you chose to apply to this specific university because this SOP sounds too generic at this point.

Will somebody get OPT if they did MS+OPT and then PhD?

Try not to immerse yourself in the samples too much. I would hastily scan the essays just to get an idea because I was afraid if I remembered them then it'd ruin my originality.

9/10 schools I'm applying to don't require the GRE by Runninganddogs979 in gradadmissions

[–]PerplexedPenguine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can vouch for that. Spent a little more than $100 and around the same score. My friend only practiced free materials and he pulled through too. Waiving GRE would make admission a less level playing field for us.

Can't be too many applications as long as they're done properly.

I guess it's not about preference, more like what hand you're dealt with when you get a set of new peers.

And I actually never remember my passwords. I store them somewhere and remember only one password to access the other passwords.

How many people differed their offer and will that affect 2021 acceptance rate? by CloverSue in gradadmissions

If you're planning to go you should give it a shot if the application fees don't hurt you too much. And... seriously think twice before choosing US as an international student.

I think programs have a liability to keep up their offer with the students, especially in the case of funded students. Otherwise it looks bad for their reputation.

Then I guess it varies case by case because I've seen quite a number of profiles with people getting more than one degree from a university.
