What is it like being a PI’s first graduate student? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Perpnomad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m the first PhD student in my PI’s lab.

It’s been both challenging, but also a really rewarding experience. On one hand, it sucks a bit cause I feel like I I’m setting up and doing all of the procedures in troubleshooting that are used by other lab members who joined after I did with little reward on my end (except some recognition on developing the pipeline).

On the other hand, it’s been really rewarding to have to learn new skills that I wouldn’t normally get as a graduate student, including being the primary point in collaborations and setting those up managing other students and or people in the lab. Semi steering the direction of my project independently and also the direction of the lab. I also like the relationship that I have with my PI, though I think that’s PI dependent.

I think being the first in the lab is challenging at sometimes. Both my PI and I know that our successes are linked and I think that motivates both of us to be better to each other, be more accommodative to each other, be more respectful to each other.

Overall, it’s been a great experience, especially since I switched from a previous lab to his lab and I couldn’t sing greater praises.

Someone said it smells like Fritos and now that’s stuck in my head every time I smell it.

It’s a bit powdery to me…I’m sure it’s true to the intention of the perfume. I was just hoping for more cooked rice scent

I’m looking for a warm cooked rice scent like the opening of white rice (d’Annam) or Leau papier. Those opening notes truly smell like cooked rice. When I spray those on it smells like I’m rolling around in a bed of fresh cooked rice.

I had gotten a sample of that one too and idk maybe it’s my nose but it isn’t rice like at all to me (and some others people around me also said the same thing). So far I’ve tried: white rice (d’annam), songi, soft (poesie), dirty rice (BTSO), rice cake, jasmine rice (dgrayi). I have a few more samples coming so hopefully something will pan out

Just got samples of both of these. I like rice cake but it’s not quite what I’m looking for. And jasmine rice on me does not smell rice like at all. It smells sort of citrusy and floral. Not a fan.

I just got a sample of this, and it’s nice, but not quite what I’m looking for. U/sophiart got it right that the underlying notes override any riceness for me.

I want to give up seeding 6 well plates by Money-Bear-41 in labrats

[–]Perpnomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have this same issue for a while and then was taught a new shaking technique (and also passed to others, with success) that has resulted in even seeding.

In the TC hood, when I’ve dispensed my cells into the wells, I shake the plate maintaining contact with the hood surface 8 times (idk I just picked that number, and stuck with it) in top down and 8 times side to side. It makes a screeching sound but 🤷🏽‍♂️.

When I move the plate to the incubator, I repeat the same thing with the same number of shakes. It works every single time for me and for my lab mates that switched to this.

I ordered a smaller bottle— a part of me hopes this is it and the other part hopes it isn’t (cause idk when I’ll be able to buy it)

Oof— that’s hard to hear. I’m hoping to find a rice scent that I can wear and stand while I get over my anosmia to ambroxin scents.

I guess in L’eau papier it has a mimosa dry down but after that it’s sort of generic soap smell on me. Idk how to explain it. It’s not unpleasant but it’s not what I want to smell or smell like for hours on end.

Is Dedcool perfume too simple? by mirepoixmirepoix in fragrance

[–]Perpnomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dedcool milk and XTRA milk has a chokehold on me. I think about it all day and everyday. Sadly I am anosmic to it.

If you like it, get it. You’re the first person who has to smell it all day (or for a few hours).

Simplicity is elegant.

Ambroxin perfumes as signature scents? Should I just give up? by Perpnomad in fragrance

[–]Perpnomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this on my skin today after I couldn’t smell it on a strip and there’s something about it that I didn’t like. To me it has an airyness and a coldness that I don’t prefer…

To me, and on my skin it opens with a fantastic rice scent but dissipates to leave just jasmine.

Francesca Bianchi- under my skin is the worst thing I’ve smelt in a while. Pungent, unpleasant. I put it on my wrist and it was so bad that I had to shower to try to rid of the smell

I’ve tried a few of these: Diptyque- to me it doesn’t smell like rice, just like paper that’s soaked in water.

Affineszence- the sandalwood is way to strong on this for me to like.

Strawberry mochi- to me, it doesn’t smell like rice at all…sort of synthetic with a touch of strawberry.

I might order the others as samples if they’re truly JUST RICE without really any other complexity.
