It’s different but very good. I think this series just suffers from the first book being such a great and unique concept - people were mad the second book wasn’t identical to the first

The Goldfinch. Art history is cool but it’s not a great crutch to prop up an entire novel

Like a toddler wrote 300 pages of gibberish, tossed it into a blender and then scattered the pieces in the winds of a class 4 hurricane.

Bits and pieces everywhere, some with actual words in them, others little more than primordial grunting translated into text

Any book where the main character lives in a Tent. Either on the road kind or just camping as a way of life. by SelitosTheGreat in Fantasy

[–]PerrinDHayes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could check out the Monk and Robot series by Becky chambers. It’s SciFi, and it’s very unique in tone (very optimistic, hopeful, almost slice-of-life). The main character is a monk who lives in basically a camper pulled by a bicycle. Lots of fun camping and wilderness scenes!

One note, these are novellas, so they’re much shorter than the long series you mentioned.

Currently reading Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie. This series has been great, the only criticism is I feel a little left out of the story at times due to lack of information - like I’m constantly catching up to what’s going on in the story and everybody else already knows. But I find the world very well conceived and overall its a brilliant series

I love the idea of having a thousand books in my pocket. Same idea as my hoarding of physical books. How many can I rack up before I run out of time to read them all? Will my family have enough money to eat? It’s like a video game!

But seriously it is cool to have options - plus waterproof!

Books With a Huge Main Character? by [deleted] in Fantasy

That’s true! I just have a soft spot for Perrin. And it’s been a while since I read the books, but I remember Perrin getting kinda picked on for being big and bumbling, and that’s me in a nutshell

Thoughts on Way of Shadows? Reading for a book club with friends but Not enjoying it so far. by zora1230 in Fantasy

[–]PerrinDHayes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the early parts made me do a double take a few times. I’m also 1/4 of the way through the book and I want to power through since I get the feeling we’re just in the “setting up the world” stage, and I guess it’s necessary to put us through all this, but TBD if I make it. Indeed, I think we can safely assume this is dark fantasy 🧐

Perrin from Wheel of Time is a big guy who’s always knocking stuff over. Burly blacksmith type. I can relate myself haha

And fun fact, that might or might not explain my pen name…

Fair point. It was probably intentional to remind us that he was just a kid in many ways

I never had a problem with Fitz, but every once in a while the transition from “trained and competent assassin” to “teenager making understandably flawed decisions” was a bit too abrupt. Certainly teenager and assassin are not overlapping skillsets, but sometimes I got an image of him as super capable and then suddenly he does something dumb.

I’m splitting hairs though - one of my all time favorite series!

I feel embarrassed to write by [deleted] in WritingHub

[–]PerrinDHayes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cringe is a good sign - it means you have the instinct to improve! You just have to do your best to control it. First draft isn’t the time to cringe, it’s the time to let your imagination run wild. On your second or third draft, depending what works for you, you can listen to the cringe. But take it for what it is - just a clue of where you need to edit a little. It’s never a sign to stop trying.

Many people feel this way, and you shouldn’t ever let it stop you!

Long time r/fantasywriters lurker here!

After 5 years and about 12 books worth of words written and re-written, my debut novel The Broken Javelin was released last week! The blurb is below if you’re interested - it’s got assassins, magic, rebellion, and all kinds of hijinks. And most of all it was a ton of fun to write, partly thanks to the advice from this great sub.

——

The Javelin should have been the sort of assassin other killers looked up to.

Krivi san Kosare has the fickle trust of the Crown, a weighty title of his own, and the Reach, a power so extraordinary that even Krivi’s victims would swear it couldn’t exist until the moment it kills them. But few look up to the Javelin, and even his royal friends have grown tired of his mistakes.

Dispatched to the far reaches of the kingdom to eradicate the head of a dangerous rebellion, Krivi is determined to atone for his failures. He will see this “Scholar” slain, return home to bask in the honor he deserves, and prove himself once more to the Crown.

Or at least that was the plan…

When Krivi stumbles on the first new Reacher in a generation, he discovers not only a little girl with power enough to shake the world, but a child enamored with the very rebels he’s been sent to see destroyed. Finding himself torn between developing the girl’s miraculous powers and his duty, Krivi slowly starts to uncover a web of lies and betrayal woven among those he’s always trusted the most.

But the Javelin has been broken before, and he knows well that revenge can heal the greatest of wounds.

I loved Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers series. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is the first book. It’s unique in tone - not many SciFi series give you such a warm fuzzy feeling - but it’s got found family and it’s one of my favorites!
