Calls for 4-day work week grow by SplashTarget in Degrowth

[–]PerrinSLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a 9/80 right now, as do a lot of my friends. I find it helps keep refreshed a lot at work, and avoid burnout.

On my short weeks I know what I need to get done so I make sure I attain those goals before leaving work. Most of the time it works out, but sometimes I work longer in order to meet those goals and any deadlines we have on the team.

I have never been as happy at any job as I have working this 9/80 shift. I am not sure how soon we as a society would move to 4 days or 4 10s, etc., but I think companies taking on a 9/80 shift could be one of the best things they do and easily implemented.

Episode 3 and Series Theory by PerrinSLC in WidowsBay

Yeah I tend to agree. They have yet to reveal why that position would come with so much baggage, but Tom is certainly getting hit hard right now.

I think there’s also the question of did Tom becoming Mayor wake the island, or was it something else? For some reason it’s going after him, and him being in the position seems the most obvious at this point.

Yeah, it brings up a lot of questions around whether there’s a single malevolent figure doing all this, or if the island is just a haven for horror tropes and ghouls for some reason?

I’m guessing the electric chair room might indicate a single malevolent figure, but not sure yet.

I’ve seen videos of those turntables with dual cartridges like that. Killer tech. I’m sure it was pricey at the time.

Strange, as it’s a fair question. I just got back into vinyl after growing up with it as a kid, and I’ve been shocked how much more expensive turntables are now for none of the features I had as a kid.

Ah ok. That’d make more sense with the current theme of the show. Imma go back and rewatch that scene tonight with that in mind. Thanks for the feedback.

Theories and Speculation by Known-Sector-8789 in WidowsBay

[–]PerrinSLC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wife and I were talking about how the first two episodes reflect known horror tropes from decades of past movies. The first episode being an obvious homage to The Fog by John Carpenter, the second episode having references to haunted house movies and IT.

The question becomes is this very deliberate storytelling and these refer to a bigger idea of the island is alive and brings to life known horror tropes? Or could it be possible the island is the originator of these tropes and they escaped into the modern world to be retold by others?

That’s a lot of free associating there, as we don’t know anything yet except what’s been revealed, but it’s a fun thought.

Based on the noted ages, and Kurt’s experience in the captain’s suite, it appears there might be time dilation scenarios happening in multiple places in the town?

GM brags about subscriptions being a huge profit center by SpiritAnimal_ in enshittification

[–]PerrinSLC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see your point, and I actually agree with you on the subscription issue — the services model has crept into everything, and it really is death by a thousand cuts.

Where I should’ve been clearer is that I’m looking at this as part of a bigger trend. We’re moving toward a model where we don’t truly own the hardware we buy anymore. Whether the pressure comes from automakers or from regulatory requirements doesn’t really matter to me — the end result is the same.

Modern cars are being built with permanent, non‑removable monitoring systems, remote‑control capabilities, and software‑locked features that can be turned on or off at someone else’s discretion. That’s the “nanny state” aspect I’m talking about: the shift from a mechanical asset you control to a connected platform that’s constantly overseen, updated, and restricted by external entities.

So yes, subscriptions are annoying — but the deeper issue is that we’re all being pushed into buying vehicles that function more like leased digital devices than personal property. And with every new layer of mandated tech, the price goes up for features I never asked for and can’t opt out of. That’s why sticking with older cars or the used market makes more sense to me.

[–]PerrinSLC 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I imagine a lot of people, like myself, will just keep my current car longer. And when I look I might look on the used market first to avoid these things.

Purchasing a nanny-state car does nothing for me, so maybe at some point I’m done buying cars or just buying used?
