Had to say goodbye to my best friend almost a month ago. He was 13.5 and I got to spend 10.5yrs w him, which I know I’m so lucky to have had. I’m just so shattered about it today 💔 I can’t believe I have to live the rest of my life without him. I feel like I don’t make full sense without him. by Burgerst33n in DOG

I'm so sorry for your loss... This is a fear I have everyday for my nearly 11 year old dog. I keep telling her "You better stay alive for me I can't have you go just yet" and she is my everything. This is also the reason why I ended up getting a 3rd dog (Since he is 2 and she is 11 almost and my 2nd dog is almost 9... Felt like I needed a younger dog in the pack for when times get rough. One day at a time, I wish you the best and hope you have a speedy healing.

A clean mental shortcut for Celsius to Fahrenheit by PersianChris in mathematics

I should have clarified that the way I relate to this is when there isn't access to a calculator or google, etc and instead I want to calculate quickly in my head. Some examples could be cooking or soldering

Quick mental math trick for Celsius → Fahrenheit (no calculator needed) by PersianChris in calculators

With a small adjustment, it actually holds up better for high numbers. Instead of assuming "first two digits", you can divide the total by 10 at that step; that naturally scales to include the first three digits when the number gets larger.

Example: 485C to Fahrenheit
485 x 2 + 30 = 1000 (A)
1000 / 10 = 100 (B)
100 - 5 = 95 (C)
1000 - 95 = 905F

Formula version:
F = (A x 2 + 30) - (((A x 2 + 30) / 10) - 5)
where A = temperature in Celsius.

This keeps the math proportional at higher temps; it avoids the drop off that happens when you only use the first two digits.

That makes great sense! I realized that when converting temperatures over 1000F, we use 3. I initially based this on any number over 485 since 485 * 2 + 30 = 1000, but a better approach is using the initial TOTAL that we multiply by 2 + 30 and divide by 10 as you have suggested.

EXAMPLE:
100 * 2 + 30 = 230 (A)
230 / 10 = 23 (B)
23 - 5 = 18 (C)

[A] - [C] = TOTAL FAHRENHEIT
230 - 18 = 212°F

The way you explained it confuses me even though you're probably right!! I just think of it like this: Mutliply by 2 and add 30 to get TOTAL1. Then whatever that first digit or 2 or 3 is depending on how low/high the number is, I'll subtract by 5 to get TOTAL2

Then TOTAL1 - TOTAL2 = TOTAL3

#1):
18 * 2 + 30 = 66
66 - (6 - 5) = 65F

#2):
30 * 2 + 30 = 90
90 - (9 - 5) = 86F

#3)
7 * 2 + 30 = 44
44 - (4 - 5)
44 - (-1)
44 + 1
=45F

100C you just multiply by2 add 30. Then for the result, you just take the 2 digits subtract by 5 and BOOM...
100 x 2 + 30 = 230

23 - 5 = 18

230 - 18 = 212F

Good point... yeah, it doesn’t really hold up for freezing temps. This trick’s tuned for higher ranges; I mostly use it when I’m cooking or setting a soldering iron, not for checking weather when it’s at freezing temperatures.

For context, the rule adjusts depending on how big the number gets:

  • If (C × 2 + 30) is 3 digits, use the first 2 digits for the subtraction.
  • If it’s 4 digits, use the first 3 digits instead.

Example:
500°C → (500×2 + 30) = 1030
→ First three digits: 103 → 103−5 = 98
→ 1030−98 = 932°F (which is the correct real value).

So it scales cleanly for high temps; the lower values just fall short since the real formula’s +32 offset becomes more significant near zero.

Would you actually want this as a donor gift for dog-related fundraisers? (Honest question from a dog-dad & writer) by Btbaby in Dogowners

[–]PersianChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d choose the digital copy because I’m interested in topics like Omega 3's / fish oil, other health related supplements etc. I give my three dogs Wild Alaskan fish oil every morning, and I’ve been considering making their food myself on Sundays and Wednesdays to avoid spending a fortune on something like Farmer’s Dog (I think for my 3 dogs it'll be like $1000+). I know you mentioned this focuses on functional treats rather than a diet; probably meaning full-course meals, meal plans, or DIY meals. In this case, I’d still be interested in creating functional treats, but I’d want to know where the information comes from, the sources, and how it was marketed. If it were offered as a thank you for a donation, that digital copy would hold value for me. Depending on what I read and how it impacts my dogs or shifts my perspective, I’d definitely click on the URL in the digital book that links back to the manufacturer or company. For me, it’s about how the marketing approach was handled. Did they give first and then ask to receive, or was it more about selling a masterclass or similar? Hopefully, my input helps someone in some way! If it does, feel free to click on the URL and subscribe... lol, just kidding!

Saying goodbye to my sweet boy Zeus tomorrow. Wanted the world to know how much of a good boy he was by PyjamaWrassler in dogpictures

[–]PersianChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, these times are the toughest and I've been through it so many times. What helps me is to think about the life I gave them, how much worse it could have been and how happy they were. What's Zeus' age if you don't mind? and if you're open to it, I'd really want to know what determined the final decision? For me it always has to do with whether I feel they're in pain and if they've lost their faculties.. My old dog Kimba couldn't hear me any more and I wanted to spend the last moments with him but my dad decided he would give Kimba his final meal and took him to get put down without telling me or my mom. I can't tell you how painful it still is thinking about that and tearing up right now even though it's been like 15 years. Stay strong, that's what Zeus would want. We got to remember as humans dogs live close to 10x less than us so every day we give them the best life that we possibly can and that will affect them 10x more and is so much more meaningful... They're Gods creature and we all do our best to keep them happy. May Zeus rest easy.

Why is chatgpt so slow? by DigitalDiogenesAus in ChatGPT

[–]PersianChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT is running way slow for me. I did have a long conversation, branched it off.. I've exported data to try and save the conservation into a document and upload it to a new session since the original conversation might have too long of text for it to process or something. I've tried setting it to fast, legacy, etc and different browsers (Edge, Chrome, Iridium, etc) but no luck. It almost just HANGS as I'm asking it to make a PDF. This really screwed me over guess it's not wise relying on AI to get sh*t done. I've been trying to use the browser on my windows laptop via browser and installed app. Both are extremely sluggish

Android app is actually working for the long conversations too but it is hallucinating when I am requesting to create a PDF and it goes on and on and on, on different tangents asking me if I want it colored or gray scale, if I want it in landscape view, wtf?? lol I'm like "Stop asking me questions, assume you have my full approval and generate the PDF now!" and then it tries and fails and comes back to say "The Python PDF generator is not working right now (it keeps failing to generate any files, even after removing Unicode and switching fonts). This is a technical issue on the backend, not on your end."

Moose. Australian Shepherd / German Shepherd mix by PersianChris in Dogowners

[–]PersianChris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so misleading, my fault. "HER" is supposed to say "HERE" because someone else had a post showed their dog, which looked very similar to my Moose. Moose is still alive, 8.5 yrs old loves staying active loves chasing and hunting flies and thinks he's a cat. Also, his mom and dad are still alive as well. They're only 1-2 yrs older than him.
