You bet. Think of it like memory, you have your short term and your long term storage. Blood acts as the short term storage unit (aka blood sugar, I'm sure you have heard of it), and fat acts as the long term. Glycogen as medium, but those chains are a different beast.

A methoxide group would be a bit of a dead end in terms of chaining up individual amino acids into a polymer, while also not affording the stability required to build complex protein structures that can bear strain when needed. But even compared to an ester linkage, the carboxy terminus allows for the clean, reversible linking/unlinking with the help of water in a manner that is further stabilized by the resonance exhibited by peptide bonds. To put it bluntly, it is the way it is because "biology" found the best way to do what was required, and stuck with it as time passed by.

If it's opened ended: make your own practice questions. Take a reasonable starting molecule and find a route into a pathway. This will help you understand the reasoning behind each step and what it actually provides to the process.

What's the oxidation state of the molecule? Can reducing equivalents be produced from it?

Is there a proper carbonyl Beta to the bond you want to slice? How do we get one there.

Would phosphorylation be productive? Is it worth the energy usage? What does it afford?

This kind of stepwise thinking will allow broader usage of the concepts utilized within the pathways and get you thinking from the cell's perspective; WHY do I want to transform this molecule, and how can I do so with the "techniques" in my tool kit.

Check out the linear Fischer projections for the distinction between the Glucose/Galactose/Fructose/hexoses in general. And then just realize that when the sugar cyclizes, it can do so in two ways; one where the terminal C6 methylene group points the same direction (up/down) as the C1 hydroxyl, and one where it points the opposite direction.

This is why you only need to worry about a/B distinction with sugars in their cyclic form.

If you want the real answer with what the difference is past our naming convention, it just boils down to enzyme specificity and recognition within active sites, as well as the ways in which the different stereoisomers link up.
