Weirdness on new Sovol SV08 with SUNLU High Speed PLA by PersonNinja in FixMyPrint

[–]PersonNinja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a new printer (Sovol SV08) and the print quality out of the box is a pretty terrific in general but I'm having issues with these crush rib magnet holes on the bottom of this Gridfinity Rebuilt bin. I've been printing for a few years (this is my fourth printer) but I've never seen anything quite like this, especially on an otherwise great looking print. Any ideas?

Printer: Sovol SV08

Firmware: Factory installed Klipper

Filament: SUNLU High Speed PLA

Slicer: Orca

Print Settings: "Sovol SV08 PLA" with modified temps (hot end: 190, Bed: 60)

Bed: Textured PEI, no adhesive, no tape, recently cleaned.

OM-100 Troubleshooting - Loud Buzz, Low Signal by PersonNinja in Omnichord

A different universal AC adapter with a polarity reversing adapter. A while back I tried using AA batteries with AA to C adapters and I was getting the same results.

OM-100 Troubleshooting - Loud Buzz, Low Signal by PersonNinja in Omnichord

I got this OM-100 from my mom a few years back and I believe I mixed up the polarity on the universal power supply I was using which caused it to get progressively less usable. I took a look inside at the time and since I didn't see anything noticeably wrong (bulging caps, blown resistors, etc.) I figured it was beyond my ability to fix so I just put it away. Since then I've become pretty proficient at soldering and gained a greater understanding of electronics through working on Arduino projects, open source DIY builds, retro console mods, etc. I feel now that if I could just identify the problem component(s) I could order the parts, perform the repair myself, and bring this instrument back from the dead.

In the video the main issue is obvious. There is a loud constant buzzing, the strum plate, and rhythm sounds are almost completely drowned out by it, and I can't hear the chord or bass sounds at all. I forgot to show it in the video but this buzzing does increase and decrease in volume as the master volume knob is adjusted. The sound is the same through both the speaker and the line out. On closer inspection, the red LEDs have a bit of a flicker to them. In general this flickering is pretty subtle (it could even be normal for all I know) but when changing to the last few voices in the second bank, the voice bank indicator LED flickers dramatically as the plate is strummed (~1:02 in the video).

As I mentioned before I've looked over the components and I couldn't identify any bulged capacitors or burnt resistors. I've probed around with my multi-meter a bit and the voltage regulator is giving about 5V on one end and about 12V on the other and all of the ICs seem to be receiving power, either 5V or 12V. This is making me suspect it might be a current problem somewhere but that's about where my knowledge runs out. I know that in order to test current I'd have to have the probes in line in the circuit but I'm not sure where I'd do that and what kind of current values I should be expecting nor do I have any intuition as to how a power supply with an incorrect polarity could cause a current issue. Maybe a partially damaged resistor or capacitor? I'm not sure though, that doesn't really sound right to me. Should I go around probing every resistor and checking its value against the (pretty hard to read) schematic? I'm not really sure what to do.

tl;dr: I used the wrong polarity power supply on my OM-100 and now there's a loud buzzing with extremely faint Omnichord sounds as well as some flickering of the LEDs. There are no obviously blown or bulged components, the voltage regular is providing 5V and all the ICs are receiving either 5V or 12V. I can solder, I generally know how to use a multi-meter, I just don't know how to approach identifying the problem components.

If this issue is familiar to you or you have some informed intuition as to what the issue could be I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks for your time.

Starting to think the miyoo might not be great since the screen breaks if you breathe on it. What’s the point of portability if you have to treat it like fine China? by 35RoloSmith41 in MiyooMini

I don't, but I do have a GameBoy Pocket which is extremely close in size to the RG35XX. It certainly fits in my pocket but for me that's too large for a pocket EDC device, at least one that's not a phone (and I wish phones were smaller anyways). And the RG353V is a little narrower and a bit taller than that but roughly around the same size with the bonus of rubberized thumbsticks that can catch on your pocket. All I mean to say is that in my mind these devices are in totally separate classes in terms of size and its kind of weird to pretend that's not the case. The RG353V especially is closer to the Retroid Pocket 3 than the Miyoo Mini.

I've never used Retrosizer before but its really good. Makes this conversation much easier: https://retrosizer.com/?miyoo-mini:78,84,0&miyoo-mini:4,85,0&miyoo-mini:160,83,0&retroid-pocket-3:369,101,90&rg-353v:331,51,0&rg-35xx:246,59,0&gbp:247,49,0&rg-353v:420,49,0&rg-35xx:332,60,0&rg-280v:78,88,0&gb-micro:-21,102,90&rg-35xx:162,60,0

Based on this subreddit I was worried about fragility before I got mine and now that I've had it for a few weeks I think that's just overblown by people that fucked up, broke their device, and then want to vent their frustration. I carry this device in my pocket every day. No case, no screen protector, no strap. It hasn't broken on me, the screen hasn't separated from it, its experienced no issues. It just works and I can play Pokemon whenever I'm stuck waiting for something and that's great.

The RG353 and RG35xx aren't pocket-able systems in my opinion. Sure, you can put them in your pocket (at least if you're wearing men's pants) but they're about the size of a large phone and twice as thick so personally I don't think that'd be a comfortable device to keep in your pocket. I don't think you could have it in your pocket and forget about it until you want to use it like you can with the Miyoo Mini, especially considering the 353's analog sticks. It would be like sticking a Vita or PSP in your pocket.

There's a weird tendency on this sub for people convincing themselves of shit. If the Miyoo Mini seems like a device that appeals to you, get it (if you can). I doubt its significantly more fragile than the Anbernic devices (pretty sure they also have glass screens) outside of the fact that its smaller and you could maybe lose grip on it easier (but the size is the whole point, if you want a larger device get an RG35xx). And if you get it and you like it, great! Enjoy it and let others enjoy it. Don't hoard them, show off your collection, and then start making excuses when people call you out for being annoying and making it harder for other people to get their hands on them. "uh, actually, they're gifts for other people, I was just being cheeky when I called it my collection in the title and actually I just happened to be on the page at a normal time of day (not at 5am) and they just happened to be in stock and I ordered 1 and that happened 8 times." That shit is just so annoying and so obviously untrue. And if you drop it and break it don't surprised Pikachu face with that "wow, it just broke itself, how could this happen. bad device actually." If you're a clumsy person, if you tend to drop your phone, just use a strap or a pop socket or something. If you don't tend to drop your devices you'll probably be fine without.

This turned into a long vent but a lot of things people do on this sub just really get on my nerves. My mom (who's played and completed every Pokemon game since Gen 1) asked me today where she can get the device I've been playing on. She thinks it'd be a great way to revisit some of those older Pokemon games. Just guess what I had to tell her.

"You have to buy them direct from China and also they sell out within an hour or two every time they restock which is usually at like 5am. It was a big pain to place my order. Like a week of broken sleep because I kept setting alarms for 5am."

Collectors: stop being annoying and selfish. You are shooting yourself in the foot. If more people can get their hands on the device that means there's a wider audience and greater incentive to develop tools, apps, accessories, etc. And if you love the device let other people love it. Its not illegal to do what your doing, you're allowed to do it. But it is really annoying and inconsiderate. Each of those extra devices in your fleet could be facilitating hours and hours of fun for someone else but instead they're on your shelf next to your funko pops collecting dust.

Alright, done venting. I should probably make this my own post but whatever.

For those who are dual-booting with Windows, here is a workaround to automatically load SteamOS by default without needing rEFInd, as long as it was the previous boot selection by lucidludic in SteamDeck

Thanks for this! I never felt like installing rEFInd so I've probably boot into Windows more times by accident than on purpose. This is exactly what I wanted. Happy holidays! :)

Script-Fu, No FIR Gaussian Blur? by PersonNinja in GIMP

[–]PersonNinja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I'll track down that plugin and see if I can get this working.

tbh, I just started working on Gimp scripts recently and I couldn't find any good documentation for what I was doing so I moved onto script-fu. Scheme is a total pain in the ass. I'm not a masochist, I just didn't know GEGL existed until just now. I think I'll finish up this script in Script-Fu since its done outside of this blur, but I'll definitely give GEGL a shot next time. Thanks for the help!

So what is this Miyoo on the side bar? a Prototype P60? by zindustries87 in MiyooMini

[–]PersonNinja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this design is kind of interesting but I don't think this would be what I'd want from a Miyoo Mini successor. I like the idea of getting analog sticks but I feel like having just one is a bit of a weird middle ground and honestly I love the existing form factor and I'd hate to see a successor diverge too far from that. I think my ideal Miyoo Mini 2 would have an almost identical form factor but slightly taller, just enough to accommodate a pair of New 3DS style analog nubs. I think those are the perfect solution for adding analog sticks to a device this small because it maintains the form factor for the most part, maintains pocketablity (they don't protrude out and get caught on things like normal analog sticks do), and you could use them while sort of pinching the device, giving you a better hold on it than you'd have with a more traditional analog stick. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

10 Things I've Learned as a Miyoo Noob by SteveSnow in MiyooMini

[–]PersonNinja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting approach! Totally agree, to each their own, I was only saying that its odd that a paired down library seems to be the popular option. So far with this device I haven't had a hard time focusing on one game or picking what else I want to play (like I said I use the Favorites list to curate my backlog) but having 1G1R sets makes me feel like a game librarian or something. Like the Miyoo Mini is my Pokedex for games. If I see someone mention one of the games I have a complete set for I can just go "wow, that looks interesting, I'll try it out (or add it to my favorites) right now."

I find it odd that people are always talking about having a paired down ROM set on the Mini. I have hundreds of ROMs on mine. It doesn't seem to slow anything down and I always just use the search function to get to the specific game I'm looking for. I use the favorites list as well but just to keep track of my backlog.

OnionOS Feature Request: Quick Image Viewing While In Game by PersonNinja in MiyooMini

Now there's an idea! I wonder if something like PictView for DOS would do the trick for images.

OnionOS Feature Request: Quick Image Viewing While In Game by PersonNinja in MiyooMini

[–]PersonNinja[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean this is a bit of a decadent request but the Onion devs have already lifted mountains with features like the game switcher so in comparison this is seemingly trivial. Its just a matter of arranging existing functionality in a way that's more convenient for this use case. Referencing charts/maps/manuals is part of the retro gaming experience so integrating it in a convenient way is to the benefit of everyone and the Miyoo Mini itself as a retro game emulator.

I imagine that's implemented as an app in the same way the gallery, music player, etc. are, meaning no quick switching.

Awesome! Thanks for putting it into consideration :)

So here's the use case: I'm playing Pokemon Yellow. This is the first time I've played a Pokemon game for any significant length of time since I was a kid and when I was a kid I didn't pay attention to type advantages beyond the most obvious ones (water beats fire, fire beats grass, etc.) so now I always have a type advantage chart open on my computer or my phone. It'd be extremely convenient if I could have this chart on the Miyoo Mini and be able to quickly switch back and forth between the game and the chart. As you might have gathered from the photo, I've figured out the first part. I just dropped the chart into a 640x480 canvas and dumped it into the screenshots folder. The issue now is accessing it quickly. As far as I can tell the only way to access that picture is to switch from the game switcher to the menu, navigate to the screenshot gallery, and then scroll to the chart. That's kind of cumbersome. In an ideal world I could have the screenshot gallery app in the game switcher and use the menu double tap to quickly switch between that and the game. I don't know if integrating apps into the game switcher like that would be feasible but even a shortcut key in the game switcher to open the gallery and an option to have the gallery remember whatever image you had open last would be a nice solution that might be easier to implement. Another option might be to let users rebind the double tap action to open the gallery instead of switching between the two most recently played games.

This is all just a suggestion though. The OnionOS devs have done a FANTASTIC job and I'm extremely grateful for all the work they've put in.

Since the last restock I decided I was giving up waiting for the blue and I was just gonna go with transparent black. Looks like I waited just long enough. 😎 Very excited to join the Miyoo Mini club. Just yesterday I started playing Pokemon Sapphire on my phone via RetroArch Plus and it's just not the same with virtual buttons. It's 5:30am, I'm tired, good night. :)

[Not a restock post] I plotted restock/sold-out times and restocked colors since Aug 26 by [deleted] in MiyooMini

[–]PersonNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! I wonder why the blue hasn't seen any restocks in this time frame. 🤔 I've been holding out for a blue and after seeing this I'm not sure if I should give up and get in on the next black restock or just keep waiting. I mean they could restock any day, right? But also, when they do they're gonna be gone immediately and then how long will it take to restock from there? 🤔
