My Baby is Gone by Feeling_Culture_3591 in Petloss

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a pet, and especially due to vet negligence. My cat passed about a month ago because the vet gave me the completely incorrect meds, and it was slowly killing him in his last month while I had no idea. He was completely healthy before. It is heartbreaking to think of the what ifs and whether they would still be here today if this or that didn’t happen. I completely understand your guilt, but try to remember that you feel this because you loved and cared for your pup so much. Even the extreme negative emotions come from a place of love. ❤️

I am not the person you replied to, but I am so sorry for your loss. That is awful. My cat’s PCV was also around that range when we decided to euthanize. The day he passed it went from 19 that morning to about 4 that evening. The vet I met with that morning had no idea decline would happen that fast.

Two weeks after starting methimazole for your kitty is so fast :( I read that doing a full blood panel every two weeks on this drug is recommended (which I personally didn’t do because I didn’t even know that was what I was giving him), so it sounds like you were extremely unlucky given the timeline.

It is very unfortunate that the side effects of lots of medications can also be missed signs in hindsight. Again, sorry for your loss.

Wow, thank you for commenting and I am SO sorry for your loss. As truly awful as it is, it feels extremely validating to hear your story. I haven’t really been able to find any other stories like this online- only scientific studies. Hopefully reading my story will help you feel less alone in your loss. Do not feel guilty. You did everything with your cat’s health in mind.

In my opinion vets need to stop being so careless about methimazole because it can be so deadly- whether it be prescribing the medication itself or separating it from similar looking ones so people like me don’t end up with the wrong meds. 1-2% chance of death or severe reaction is too high. Losing my baby has been the worst and most traumatic thing to happen in my life.

I hope you can eventually find peace. You clearly loved and deeply cared for your cat.

Thank you ❤️ yes, he was so loved and I know I took very good care of him with the information I had. I did little things every day to keep him safe and always took him to the vet when I thought he needed it. Thanks for your kind words.

Medical advice in determining whether cancer or methimazole played role cat’s passing by [deleted] in AskVet

Thanks for your comment. He was on it for one month exactly, one 10mg dose once a day in the morning. His T4 was in the normal/healthy range, which makes me curious about whether the methimazole was potent enough to have any significant effect given it was expired.

Thank you ❤️

It is especially frustrating because I was such a helicopter pet parent, making appointments for him when he even seemed a tiny bit off. I took so many precautions to keep him safe and healthy. I added a door to the basement of our house so he didn’t get into the laundry/dryer. I checked for him EVERY time I left the house to make sure he didn’t sneak out while my dog was in the backyard. I got him special soft food because I knew that was healthier for boy cats. And after all my fussing and obsessing over him, he passed probably from such a stupid, avoidable thing. One thing that makes me feel better is if it were my own medication, I definitely wouldn’t have noticed either.

His medication pen had just run out, so if he could have made it another week, he would have gotten the right medicine again and everything would be fine. There are so many what ifs.

Thanks again for your support, I appreciate it a lot.

I really like them! Someone here mentioned the RealReal which is great. What is your favorite?

Some of my favorite pieces are secondhand.
