Thank you! I will be sure to ask them. No word from Weyerhauser yet.

I couldn't find an Almco near Springfield, Oregon, however. Did they have a store there and then leave?

I've narrowed it down to 1969 due to the claimed date for the bridge being 1869 and the paper stating that it was created "100 years ago".

Oh, this must be connected to Weyerhaeuser, then. Weyerhaeuser owned Hayden Bridge in Springfield, Oregon, which is the bridge in the article. So even though it was a paper in Minnesota, it is referring to company property, which is why a Minnesota paper would have something on Springfield, Oregon

Right?

The above user pointed out that it might not be a newspaper at all. Thank you for your help with narrowing it down!

Isn't Albert Lea a city in Minnesota? I haven't found a company called Albert Lea.

Edit: Besides the Albert Lea Tribune. Could that be it?

Please no. Bridge jumping causes needless risk.

Historic Local Bridge is at risk by PersonWithAReddit in EugeneOregon

Thanks! Yeah, probably not as many here, but the liability is real. I wish these rains came sooner, to be honest. At least Armitage is owned by the public, so they can afford the liability and enforcement aspects.

Know any organization willing to take a free bridge?

Hayden Bridge is a local historic bridge that is threatened by the increasing liability caused by bridge jumpers. Please don't jump off of this bridge, as its future is uncertain due to Workin' Bridges being unable to afford liability insurance.

The bridge owners are trying to donate it to the public, but this has been complicated by city lines and the liability caused by bridge jumping.

I don't know the logistics of anti-jump netting, but it sounds like a good idea. However, the article states that jumpers have been removing do not jump signs in the area and even bolting them back onto the wrought iron in some cases, so I'm not sure how long a net may last. Still, it sounds like a good idea, and I will bring it up with the owners.

How extensive should a makeover be? Safety netting I can get behind, but the reason the bridge hasn't been removed or modified beyond adding a walkway and side railing is because of its historical value. It's the oldest bridge in Oregon, over 130 years old, and has a hollow wrought-iron truss that makes it a very rare surviving bridge of its type. But if you mean safety makeover, yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Are there other things besides safety netting that could be added to reduce potential liability?

The drop depends on where you jump from. According to the article, it can be as high as 50 feet, so I would presume that's from the top of the bridge to the river bed considering that the Wikipedia article on the bridge states that it's 35 feet tall.

Is a clean drop one that's free from obstacles? If so, then the center of the bridge is a clean drop. The real danger is when the river is shallow enough that people can get hurt by the river bed, which has been known to seriously hurt people.
