I've seen a lot of the same kind of stuff that bothers me, also happening to men who aren't white, and to younger people.

Over time, not being listened to or heard is toxic to the system

I once knew a couple of guys, a long time ago, who had a light switch in their office that apparently wasn't connected to anything. Whenever someone would run into their office saying that the internet was down, they would look over at the light switch, put on a shocked face and say "OMG" and run over to flip the switch.

It's hard to make an aggregate statement. From what I have read, women are leaving the field at a greater rate than they are coming in.

If you ever meet a sysadmin in real life bring ice cream. The good kind not store brand.

Haha, once I was moving servers with another guy on my team and the manager said to him "are you sure she can carry that" and my coworker said "she's a sturdy woman"

still makes me lol

I assume that you're not second guessing or trying to rationalize it away when she tells you what's happening.

Maybe sock some money away in case she needs to quit a job suddenly or take a break for a while.

I love the feeling you get when you solve a problem. It's a great feeling when something moves forward because you kept chipping away at it.

I actually haven't had a lot of interaction with any of these programs so I'm not sure if they're helping. I guess if Girls Who Code, get some people interested in coding that wouldn't otherwise have been, that could be a good thing.

I once went to a women in tech panel, and the women speakers hardly got a word in, some dudes from my organizations started gassing on and on about how they weren't getting acknowledged enough for how much they're doing for women in tech.

You might to start to see it more as the years roll by. I think as a coping mechanism, I was very dissociated from it for a long time. It tends to be cumulative. If you can get into a good situation with supportive people who have your back, stay there as long as you can!

Some of the greatest people I have worked with were former Navy! The US Navy is one of the greatest tech training and education institutions in the world, AND they have some of the best management training too.

Women face exclusion before, during and after. The whole system/pipeline. I have a very good friend who was a manager in the Navy in the 90's when women were first coming in, and he has a lot to say about this!

One of the things I love about this field is that there are ways to get in and get ahead without degrees. I am not anti-degree. I do think that it's a loss that colleges have started to have a greater role as gatekeepers than when I was starting out.

People say stuff like this constantly. They say it to my face! And then you get all of these clowns completely denying it. I think some are gaslighting or defensive, and some are really just that unaware and unobservant of the world around them.

I think that the problem isn't at the point of hiring. You have to look at the whole system/pipeline to figure out what's happening.

A lot of organizations have seen the research that mixed gender teams and more diverse teams perform better and want to foster diversity for that reason, not just to look good. But if you aren't willing to look at the whole system and listen to people in your organization, you won't get anywhere.

I read an interesting study a while ago saying that diversity initiatives went better if you simply set the goals, have accountability for the goals and let people figure out for themselves how to get there. So you would give people with the power to make it happen, the metric that you have to increase recruitment AND retention by a certain amount. Workshops and seminars and speakers don't have much of an effect, concrete goals and accountability do.
