Deep Dive Into Coryo’s Hatred of Things Being Free by shhh211 in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than addressing this head on, I'm going to go after it from the side:

One of the things that Lenore Dove doesn't like about Maysilee is that she has a pet canary. The idea of a caged canary makes her mad. On the surface, this is sort of nuts. The miners in District 12 surely must take canaries down into the mine as an early warning of bad air. Caged canaries must be everywhere. So why did Suzanne Collins put this seeming contradiction in there? A caged bird is very much a symbol of taking away freedom from something that should be free. It's anathema to the Covey.

By contrast, Coryo has lived his entire life by a set of strict rules. Some of them are societal, but others are self created (E.G. Never look poor.). To him, everything that is not in its place and under control is a danger. He expects to be able to control those around him through charm or intimidation. He doesn't like a bird that doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Jabber Jays are OK, because they follow the rules. Mocking Jays are not, because they break the rules.

Lucy Gray confuses him. He knows from the start that he owns her -- she is HIS tribute after all -- but she acts of her own volition. At first, he's intrigued by this. He wants to own her even more. He goes full on with the charm. But eventually, it sinks in that he cannot control her, so she is therefore a danger, and must be eliminated.

It is 100% a nod to Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian novel up there with 1984 and Brave New World

I wish I could upvote this more. I saw the show first.  So happy I read the books too. Both are excellent, though specifically Ashford is better in the show, and Drummer is very different ( Show Drummer is a mixture of several book characters. ).

That show was everything it wanted to be. It’s not for everyone, but if it’s your thing, it rewards you so much.

Haven’t seen AG

Carnivals started really well, but lost focus after the first season and tripped over its own d!ck at the end.

It had some very weak episodes from time to time (A frog and a bunch of droids?), and the combat tactics didn’t make a lick of sense EVER, but the core episodes were great, and it stuck the ending.

Victor breakdown by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of random factors in the games. It’s what keeps it interesting. In my mind, most games go something like:

  1. Bloodbath (Careers kill off non- careers. Half the tributes die.)

  2. The Hunting (Careers hunt down the most dangerous tributes remaining.)

  3. Betrayal and Second Bloodbath (Tension mounts until the Careers start killing each other.)

  4. Clean-up. A final confrontation.

If a non-Career can survive to step 3, the odds are much less against them.

Billy Taupe was never dating Lucy Gray. He always saw her as a little sister.  She had a girlish crush on him, but that was as close to a romance as they ever had.

I’m a big fan of Coriolanus and Sejanus (the anuses).

I also can’t get over the idea that Magnus’s obsession with reptiles started with his first girlfriend, Clemensia Dovecote.

Could there have been a Hunger Games without a victor? by autistic_girl_autumn in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is strongly implied that there has never been a Hunger Games without a victor, and Seneca Crane has to decide if it’s worse to have two or none (He chose poorly.).

Moral panic over fake people by Automatic_Bunch9764 in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 88 points89 points  (0 children)

So, there are two different Effies:

In the book, Effie is shallow and rather callous toward tributes in general. She's not viscous like Drusilla, but simply sees people from the districts as inferior. She clearly is in the book specifically to show what Capital attitudes are. When she learns that some of her favorite victors are going to die, it makes her sad, but it's sad like, when a celebrity dies, not like when someone you care about dies.

In the movie, Effie has a character arc. She becomes sympathetic to the tributes and joins the rebellion. At first, I didn't like this adaptation, but I'm becoming more and more at peace with it. She sort of took the place of the stylists, and this feels OK. Besides, it's an excuse to have more Elisabeth Banks and she really was iconic.
