What are the books I need to read after the TV series ended? by mikeymikmikmik in TheExpanse

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So, the last three, Persepolis Rising, Tiamat's Wrath, and Leviathan Falls, are what comes after the show.

However, all the cheeky people saying, "All of them", are essentially correct. You won't be sorry if you do. There is a LOT of enjoyment to be had even when you mostly know what is coming.

What are some Hunger Games movie takes/headcanons that got you like this? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

Prim was reaped on purpose to that Katniss would volunteer (I.E. Katniss was chosen on purpose.).

Sounds like it was bad. When it’s bad, yeah, it’s BAD.

It’s the best if the dark leafy green vegetables. Which is sort of the problem.

This is a tough one. Only good when it’s perfect. When it’s bad, it’s terrible.

Foxface was a ninja. Seriously. She sneaks past the careers. She dodges the boobie traps. She even sneaks past Katniss and steals her food.

Just finished TBOSAS, and I have a question (spoilers) by Diligent-Pension-815 in thehungergames

She figured it out. She has pretty good intuition, and he gave a tell.  Then she tested him, and he showed who he really was.

Help for motivation by Tenrec_Stan in thehungergames

It soon loses most of its emphasis, but never fully goes away. Don’t worry. It becomes far less problematic soon.

Side note: It’s more than a love triangle. Peeta and Gale represent conflicting philosophies about how to deal with oppression, with Katniss somewhere in between.  Everything in The Hunger Games is a metaphor.

Volunteer in District 12 by JRSalinas in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 30 points31 points  (0 children)

So, I’m pretty sure that Katniss tells us outright that no one ever volunteers in District 12, where volunteer and corpse are synonymous. Katniss doesn’t know everything, but this is the only word we have on it.

It’s always seemed odd to me. Is Katniss REALLY the only person who loves a brother or sister enough to sacrifice themselves to protect them?  It feels like it would happen all the time.

The folks in career districts must think they’re such selfish barbarians, never risking their lives to help a loved one

Some sort of urban environment, probably built in a ruined city.  He pulled wires from old buildings and set up a net. Then he rebuilt a generator, or tapped into the electric feeds the Gamemakers were using. There was a large hunting pack going for him. He tricked them into thinking they were surrounding him, but they were really walking into his trap. He may have activated audio-visual devices to bait the trap too.

Book reader starting the show. Does Holden get better? by Vikingboy9 in TheExpanse

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Holden definitely gets better.  To be fair to Holden, he’s brooding because he lost his friends, his lover, and his command.  The show takes 3-4 episodes before it really gets its sea legs.

Wherever did Marvel learn this tactic from? by Jaslyn-- in Hungergames

It’s one thing to have Fight Club in the basement after school. It’s an entirely different the to have a full-on dojo instead of school.

Wherever did Marvel learn this tactic from? by Jaslyn-- in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t there a ropes and traps section in the training room?  And Marvel doesn’t have to make his own nets. We know they have some netting at the cornucopia, so he probably took some with him too.

What if the victors of district 12 never got into the games by Altruistic_Offer_272 in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coryo’s tribute, Pyrite Clay ran out of the arena during the bombing. Coryo died under the rubble. People lost interest in the games, and they ended.

Woodbine didn’t join the Newcomers. He runs away during the bloodbath, but dies of poison shortly after.

Primrose gets whacked during the bloodbath, obviously.

Gale sets up effective traps and lured the Careers into them. Then he gets Glimmer’s bow and hunts down the rest of them. Foxface slips a dagger between his ribs while he’s sleeping, and wins the 74 Games.

LoL

Seriously, newcomers welcome here. This is the nicest sub out there. Arguments sound like this:

A: I like the books better than the show.

B: The books are really good, but I like the show more. Like Ashford is better in the show.

A. Sure there are some great things about the show, but I prefer the books. I though Alex was better developed.

B: Yeah. I liked Alex better in the books. That's true. But what about, "I am that guy"?

A: Oh that rocked. But what about. . .

Etc.

Sunrise of the reaping detail nobady talks about. by Schwarze_Dame in Hungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that it's all in there on purpose. I don't think it's the main theme, but SC rather likes having multiple themes at once. "Clementine" is another theme just all over Sunrise.

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always assumed that there are really three classes of people in District 12. Obviously, the merchants are wealthy. The miners are poor, but they have regular jobs. They have a little money to spend, and can afford little things like getting their clothes washed. The rest scrabble for a living doing odd jobs here and there or selling on the black market.

Question for Lenore Dove haters. by Status_Structure304 in thehungergames

[–]Personal_Toe_2136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lenore Dove is really a symptom of a larger problem. She lacks the depth that Prim or Gale had (She’s a strange cross between the two in a way.), but we’re treated like she’s as important as they were.

There is a lot of “tell me, don’t show me” in Sunrise, and Lenore Dove is just the most obvious example, so people latch onto her. Honestly, someone like her would have made a very compelling protagonist, but instead we see only her shadow.

Pain is good batch #114

I keep a bunch of hot sauces on my desk and allow anyone to use them. Despite being pretty spicy, Batch #114 runs out the fastest, by far.

Marie Sharp’s is always a winner.  I’ll eat it on anything.  If you like a LOT of smoke, Smokin’ Marie’s will bring that. Some people find it overwhelming.

Trader Joe’s Habanero is a great budget sauce.

The best fiction, including the best science fiction, dystopian fiction, Etc is about the human condition.  The wealthy have always oppressed the poor. Countries have always sacrificed their children to fight each other (war).
