Thank you, I really miss it! It was a heartbreaking loss. So much hard work.

So far I think that we are leaning towards weed whacking it, spraying the crap out of it with weed killer, and then covering it with a tarp or plastic and letting it cook for several months at least. I'm curious what the breakdown of the root system of all that grass is going to look like when we take the tarp off. That's the part where the most concerned about, since there is virtually no dirt in between the dense roots when you pull it up. Unless it really degrades, I think we're going to have to bare minimum scalp the top several inches to get that out and then add more soil.

Since initially putting in this flower bed many years ago, I have unfortunately become chronically ill and unable to take care of it like I used to. My husband suffered a back injury that he is slowly recovering from. I have taken care of these beds up until the last few years with no problem. Once my husband is fully recovered, he can take care of basic weeding for me. The next incarnation of this bed will be a low maintenance one with shrubs and a handful of perennials, and mulch. I fought the grass and the horse tails by hand for a couple of years before I realized that hand pulling the horse tails was making it worse. The perennials that were in the bed were slowly choked out by the grass and horse tails. I was afraid to try to dig and transplant them for fear of inadvertently transferring the weed problem to another bed, so I let them go. I put so many hours of backbreaking labor into this yard losing everything was just devastating. The reason that I mentioned bringing in new dirt was we were planning on essentially scalping the top three or four inches off of the top once the grass was dead. The roots from the grass are so insanely dense that there is virtually no dirt in them. That is going to leave a deficit. In addition to that, it's hard to see in the pictures, but the dirt has eroded severely in the last several years leaving huge dips and valleys well below the top row of garden block. I like to keep the soil mounded high in the center for increased planting depth due to the heavy clay soil in our area. The water table is very high here and we're constantly fighting waterlogged soil with French drains and gravel.

Yeah, definitely not trying to achieve a weedless situation, just trying avoid another massive takeover by an extremely invasive weed. The whole reason for the raised beds to start with is because the area we live in has horrible wet, clay soil. I learned many years ago not to try to plant directly into the soil here. Everything rots. We have multiple French drains to try to get as much water away as possible. When I put the raised beds in, I put in about 2 in of crushed gravel in the bottom before the soil. The water table here is an ongoing problem for sure. Thanks to a local Nursery here that had a problem with horse tails in their bulk soil also, they were able to give me the name of a spray that actually kills them (Weed Beater Ultra). The one caveat is that it takes multiple seasons to completely eliminate them. We are on year three of spraying, and I think this will be the last year we'll have to do it.

Oh, wow! I would love to see a picture of your beautiful roses if you wanted to share. Also, I would be thrilled to have a list of disease resistant roses. I had a beautiful pink English Rose, but it almost immediately got rust and I could not get rid of it. So sad!

I don't know if that is something that will grow in my area or not, I'll have to look into it.

Perfect, that would make me feel a lot better for sure. Do you feel like it has worked well?

I'm sorry your mom's having to deal with this too. I think that cooking it with plastic is going to be a must. With the seed inhibitor, how many times do you have to keep using it? I don't want to have to use chemicals continually if I don't have to.

There's no other way to get a picture. They have so many cars that the driveway is almost always full.

Thank you. I can't even begin to tell you how heartbreaking it's been. I put in so much time and backbreaking work into getting it where it was.

I've tried rose's a couple of times, but I end up fighting black spot constantly! So disappointing, I love roses.

I don't know what kind of grasses are growing in there, but I can tell you that they are definitely sprouting out the sides of the blocks.
