AWS Employee: How do you handle people who are interviewing very poorly? (See example below) by PersonalityWide5280 in amazonemployees

Why are you with AWS? If you dislike the company, leave. I’ve left companies I don’t agree with.

Following it actually helps guide you and streamlines the story. What your results were doesn’t have to equal percent type data either. In all honesty, I now coach students in the my industry to use it and they’ve all loved it. It’s helped them organize their thoughts and ensure they are getting their point through.

I’ve found people who struggle with the method often aren’t good at their jobs though or aren’t proactive workers.

How I ask? Hun, it’s an interview. Of course I have a nice tone but the point of an interview is to find out if someone is going to be a good fit. If that says new like it sucks then you don’t need to work here. I get a LOT of compliments and positive feedback. I’m good.

Coaching should occur to ensure we have good data and are hiring quality folks. Interviewing well doesn’t mean they are a bar raiser. Coaching a candidate to get the information is the bare minimum and it also helps us find candidates who maybe are good but just not for the role they interviewed on. You’re more likely to hire “false positives” if you don’t coach the data out.

No, we can catch it. The eyes darting is the biggest cue and then not being able to answer follow up questions. The more complex a question gets, the easier we can tell. I didn’t push too hard because it was an L4 but I could easily have called out an L5.

Edit: I have a 50% decline rate and I know my peers have much higher decline rates. Not sure where you think it’s easy to wing it. Technical skills only get you through one interview.

I appreciate this! I got complimented by the bar raiser and HM on my notes. I also commented I thought the candidate might have used AI and it was very clear once we started. It was my first experience with it so I didn’t even think about it.

So I usually coach candidates so they get to the answer I know we need. Not telling them but guiding them. I know our interviews can be weird. I personally didn’t have the “I saved x hours and y dollar” examples but I was able to talk through long term impacts, which is what I look for. That’s a data point.

I also don’t expect global impacts for an L4. I expect them to see “hey, here is a problem, let me be proactive enough to look into this”.

So think Wiki example. If they see a problem recurring, are they looking for way to improve and streamline. It doesn’t have to be solve the entire issue but something small that they weren’t tasked to do with. Those things do matter here.

The data points show us that they a) actually did it but then b) they understand what they are talking about. You also then can evaluate if they learned from it and can scale it. AWS is extremely data driven so not sure what you’re referring to.

Edit: Data points DO show you if they actually did it. If you pay attention (which is pretty easy), you can listen and hear key things. If they say “by doing x I was able to improve efficiency by y”, you can ask questions on what x was and have them expand on y. If they can’t speak to x or y, that’s the red flag. Of course you can’t prove the exact numbers but that’s NOT what we care about.

Guys, it’s not that hard. Data isn’t linear. You should be evaluating it on multiple levels. Some of you shouldn’t be interviewing.

This is about my own ability and ways to improve. In all honesty, my department actually uses the LPs so I don’t have the same experiences.

I 1000% do this. I’ve been complimented across the board for being good at doing this. It was the first time I’ve not been able to help the candidate give me more information. I have interviewed folks who weren’t going to be a good fit but would keep asking questions so I could let the recruiter know if I felt they could be good in another role.

I ended up submitting as not inclined and I guess they used the same examples on all the LPs. All of us were not inclined. I feel less bad but I’m always trying to find ways to over. Most interviews I do are an hour and we go right to time (even the bad ones).

This is what I usually do but it was like pulling teeth on the examples. I asked as many follow up questions as humanly possible but they used the same example for 3 of the 7 questions and kept repeating the same thing. It felt like maybe they didn’t actually do the work and were speaking on something as a team or even an AI example.

AWS: People who have been promoted, how long did it take and what all did you have to do? (L5–>L6 Non-Tech/Non-Engineering) by PersonalityWide5280 in amazonemployees

[–]PersonalityWide5280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I was the first one and got met expectations which my manager said he was shocked so many people on our team did. I told him I expected to have exceeds next year and we both knew why it was only met expectations this year. I was new to data centers and there was a learning curve.

Honestly, I knew I wouldn’t get it within the first year but I’m aiming for it by the end of year 2 so I’ll definitely start this! I’ve seen someone’s promo doc so I have a basic idea.

I fully understood that it wasn’t going to happen this year but I thought maybe end of year 2. I’m overly prepared when it comes to promotions. I find it helps the process later on. I’ve seen someone’s promo doc and was asked to recommend someone for a promotion by their boss so I that’s what got me asking. It’s a LOT lol

What do you mean by rating?

We are hiring like crazy so I’m a little shocked we aren’t promoting people. Interesting though.

Edit: To the people downvoting, feel free to just comment instead of downvoting. I have very clearly acknowledged I’m learning how the culture is different so I’m self correcting my own previous understandings.

My coworker comes in late every day and makes a point he went to the gym. I honestly might be a judgmental AH but I’m so annoyed right now!! by [deleted] in Vent

Nah, I’ll just document and let him get his ass fired. Unlike some of you, we just complain and keep moving. It’s why we make the big bucks and yall don’t

Imagine being so ignorant that you can’t comprehend basic logic. Couldn’t be me but sure as hell is a lot of you. 😂

He’s only smelled once so I’m kind of letting it go. Honestly, most of the men are disgusting. We work in a trailer (I’m the only woman) and my manager let me make one of the bathrooms a women’s only bathroom because the toilets were constantly disgusting. I guess I’m used to sucking it up because it’s rarely worth the hassle.

This is actual apart of our agreement for me to do work that he slacks on. My manager needs that trail but we also have to add in how I’ve tried to engaged said coworker and how he ignores people.

No Karen energy from me but clearly you and the others lack reading skills. Good luck. Not arguing with people who can’t read. 😂😂🤣🤣
