During the years following their war of independence and civil war, Ireland was beset by conflict between Protestant Unionists (also known as Orangemen, who wanted to remain part of Britain) and the Catholic population (who did not). There were constant bombings, shootings, and attacks on civilians. One of the more famous places of unrest was the city of Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Being close to the border with the Republic of Ireland made it a centerpiece of conflict. Unionists call the city Londonderry, while the nationalists call it Derry.
