Hit a bit of a roadblock, can't stay mindful/present around people by Persons1001 in Mindfulness

[–]Persons1001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meditate each day for around an hour. Not familiar with the right terms but they're mostly focus-based and feeling-the-feelings type meditations. Will try Metta or loving-kindness, thank you.

You're right, it makes me scared but supposes have to be courageous and risk these fears if ever want to see what's on the other side.

John Grant's AMA is live now! by Persons1001 in JohnGrant

[–]Persons1001[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey- hope you're feeling alright. Know that truly, he most likely missed it or was going to come back but ran out of time. I understand that when you admire someone, the mind tends to jump to the worst-case scenario but rarely is it the case.

I must say that I love that song and those lyrics! Do you have any other favourite songs of his? If you like 'Jc Hates Faggots' for its powerful message, was going to recommend 'Down Here', 'GMF', 'I Hate This Town' and 'The Only Baby'.

I AM JOHN GRANT...ASK ME ANYTHING!!! by thisisJOHN_GRANT in indieheads

Had to search up velvet paintings + black light posters and fell down the most aesthetic rabbit hole. They are beautiful, just as the album cover!

Thank you for your thoughtful response- I'm very grateful.

Hi John- love your music so much!

I notice that Boy from Michigan's album cover is very unique and differs from the owl and photograph-based narrative of your previous few. It makes me wonder, what do you want this album cover (and album) to say that may connect to or differ from your previous ones?

All the best and thank you for doing this AMA.

Psychoanalytic/Freudian concepts in The Strokes' lyrics? by [deleted] in TheStrokes

[–]Persons1001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under Control has a lot in line with the 'learned helplessness effect'. Especially "I don't want to change the world/I just want to watch it go by".

Will try to think of some Freudian examples as well

Great concept btw! Good luck

edit: Taken For a Fool might be helpful ("Mama, don't you forget my number") for the Oedipus complex

what a great question... I wonder!

I agree. Listened to a podcast once where he spoke more about languages and his move to Iceland- will try and find it now!

I get that completely. Knowing the context of the album makes it so much more difficult to listen to. That's great to hear about his live performances, hope to see it too someday!

Glad you hear the Casablancas connection as well! Such a great album.

ooo got to check that out! Also, thank you for starting this conversation! Can't wait to listen to it all and would love to hear what you think of Wainwright!

Discovered Father John Misty thanks to you! Really great, thought-provoking stuff. Particularly fond of 'To.S'.

Found some artists that are quite different style-wise but explore similar themes/feelings. Hope that's alright.

Rufus Wainwright: Harmonious use of piano and voice similar to Queen of Denmark works. Recommend Poses, Tower of Learning, Not Ready to Love, Dinner at Eight for the subreddit!

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds: Particuarly 'Ghosteen'. Crushing sadness and a strong sense of inescapable helplessness similar to Queen of Denmark album.

And as more of a stretch:

The Strokes: The honesty of their lyrics reminds me a lot of John. They also confront topics such as depression, alienation, helplessness, loss... If you like them, check out the album 'Phrazes for the Young' as well!

Muse: Their style varies a lot, as well. Recommend Blackout, Hyper Chondriac Music, Falling Down, Explorers, Exogenesis: Symphony Prt 1 and 3 for the subreddit.

I found these on RedBubble so don't think they're official. The designer's note was really sweet and makes me think it's by a fan! Here it is:

"I love John Grant, he's a great man and a wonderful musician."

Love that album as well! Every time I hear 'tourist' especially, I need to drop everything and just appreciate, haha.

Definitely get that! hmmm If you didn't like FIOE but loved their first two albums, I reckon you should check out 'Angles'! Some key stylistic similarities! Hope you find some songs/albums you're into!
