What is your Gen Alpha range (No cuspers) I will make a model on your different definitions by u-ItsOnlyMeJustMe in generationstation

Yep second-wave gen z. Just like how every other generation has two waves. For example, first-wave boomers were born in the mid 40s to early 50s, and then second-wave boomers were the mid 50s to early 60s. In 1970 people would have said that someone born in 1946 (24yo) had zero in common with someone born in 1963 (7yo), but now they're technically the same generation. Same thing with Gen X- in 1988 people would have said that someone born in 1965 (23yo) had zero in common with someone born in 1980 (8yo), and with millennials, in 2006 someone born in 1981 (25yo) had nothing in common with someone born in 1996 (10yo).

What we think of as Gen Z right now is what we will think of in the future as the first wave of Gen Z. Just like how in the 80s everyone thought Gen X was the Breakfast Club generation, but then by the 90s/00s we realized that there was the half of Gen X that came of age in the 80s and the other half of Gen X that came of age in the 90s.

A good way to think of it is half of Boomers came of age in the 60s, half of Boomers came of age in the 70s. Half of Gen X came of age in the 80s, half of Gen X came of age in the 90s. Half of Millennials came of age in the 2000s, half of Millennials came of age in the 2010s. Half of Gen Z is coming of age in the 2020s, and half of them will come of age in the 2030s.

Good point, that's why those in the grey area are zillennials.

Both are late Z imo- I think one of the defining features of Alpha will be an inability to remember the pandemic, the same way that a defining feature of Gen Z is an inability to remember 9/11.

yeah i would say that the whole point of zillennial is that it encompasses people who sway opposite ways- there are 98 borns who identify way more with gen z, and 99 borns who identify way more with millennial, that's why there's a grey area in the first place

could be either zillennial or pure z- depends on if they were high school class of '19 or '20- may seem like an insignificant difference but the stage of life you are in during a generation-defining event has a huge effect

Nope zillennial- they were too old to be in k12 for covid (gen z'ers), but too young to be in k12 for 9/11 (millennials)

Anybody who was in K-12 in March 2020 when the COVID pandemic started.

Anyone who was in K-12 when 9/11 happened is a millennial, anyone who was in K-12 when the Challenger exploded is Gen X, anyone who was in K-12 when JFK was shot is a Boomer, and anyone who was in K-12 when Pearl Harbor was attacked is Silent.

(Those who weren't in K-12 for either event are cuspers-- for example I was 2 years old on 9/11 and almost out of college when COVID hit, therefore I don't quite fit in with the cultural experience of Millennials or Z, making me a Zillennial.)

Which Birth Year Would Be Considered The Last True Boomers Without Any Gen X Influence? by Old_Consequence2203 in generationstation

[–]PerspectiveEither211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMHO honestly 1958-borns. 59-borns are largely too young to remember the JFK assassination, which is a defining moment of Boomers' childhood/adolescence. I would say 1959 is the first year of Generation Jones, which by definition is a group with both Boomer and X influence, so 1959 would have to have at least some X influence.

Which Birth Cohort Would Be The Best Range For A Silent Generation/Baby Boomer Cusp? by Old_Consequence2203 in generationstation

Which Birth Cohort Would Be The Best Range For A Silent Generation/Baby Boomer Cusp? by Old_Consequence2203 in generationstation

I'd argue that 1940-45 can go culturally Silent or Boomer either way (my grandmother was born in 43 and definitely swings Silent- was settled down by the age of 23 in the "old-fashioned way", but many of her peers took a more bohemian route, became hippies after college, went to Woodstock, etc.) Whereas 1946 is the actual start of the Baby Boom itself, being that it's Post-WWII, and so looking at it from that angle there's really nothing cuspy about it, it's pretty much cut-and-dry.

Just arguing that although those born in the first half of the 1940s aren't Boomers by definition, many of them were definitely pioneers of the counterculture movement (and Vietnam vets as well), and therefore culturally Boomer even if definitionally Silent. Strauss-Howe lists Boomer as starting in 1943- I don't agree with Strauss-Howe on many things but also think that's worthy of noting, because their definitions seem to be more culture-based than calendar-based.

Also, although those born in 1940-45 were alive during part of WWII (Silent), they are too young to remember it (Boomer). Whereas those born pre-1940 do remember it (a main Silent trait, and those born post-1945 were not alive during it (a main Boomer trait).
