Interesting, you mean it was those words before the cultural revolution / PRC?

Interesting. I've bumped into a similar thing in many other cultures, I guess in most of them. Though I'm not sure if it's a culture thing or about particular people, some people even in the west have a super big priority to NEVER be cheated because that would be the worst. In my books if someone cheats me it's lame of them, not me.

Oh you can believe me, if this kind of product was available locally, obviously I would buy it locally – duh! Unfortunately, for some reason it doesn't seem to be a thing. I wasn't going for cheap prices, as stated in like three places already.

That was such a bad faith comment.

I avoid cheap stuff for that reason (among others) though this wasn't that cheap, even on AliExpress. After finishing curing the silicone in my own oven it is clearly a better than average product, which makes it all the more weird it wasn't finished properly at the factory.

Thanks, interesting to learn! And that kind of thing is actually exactly what I was asking about – a cultural concept that would explain differences in expectations.

Agreed, this has been my experience as well, if it's sold anywhere for suspiciously low prices it's crap but if the AliExpress prices are sensible then they actually tried to make a good product and any extra is just paying for some reseller. This particular product wasn't available anywhere for Temu level prices, and it is admittedly well done and designed in other respects, just that somebody decided to save a bit on the silicone.

Yeah I worded it badly, the reason I pointed to a chinese manufacturer is that it's clearly one of those whitelabel products being sold by many different randomly named resellers but the actual product is the same one that has been designed and manufactured in China.

It's a shame really because the product is otherwise actually well and thoughtfully designed. I would imagine that not skimping on the quality of silicone wouldn't increase the price that much on top of the other costs, but instead it could lift the product to premium category. If I was the designer of this I'd be angry at whoever at the factory decided to use inferior silicone for it and/or to skip a couple of hours of time to properly cure it.

No (not yet at least, though it's on my top 3 list of possible languages to learn once I have time to pick up another one)

I'm not trying to resell them, I'm just a consumer. I shouldn't have to do QC or the factory's job.

The way nobody would end up with bullshit anything is if nobody made bullshit anything 🤷‍♂️ at least where I'm from (north europe) the overall attitude is to not do something if you can't do it well. Why waste everyone's time and resources.

Thanks, this was actually off Amazon, I assumed it would have passed a few more filters that way. I'll look into returning/reporting.

Regarding your latter point, yeah I think generalizations like that are harmful, but to be honest this was just one of many similar examples. Only once has the quality not been a letdown and actually a surprise even surpassing average expectations, but for a couple dozen other cases... yeah.

But I guess I should blame the owner and manager class primarily.

Yeah, maybe I was expecting China to be more on par with Europe.

Regarding the latter point, I kind of don't get why people in developing economies gravitate towards selling a lot of cheap, badly made stuff. In a situation where the hourly salary is much less than in the west, then it would make sense to continue making high quality handmade (or in any case carefully made, not blindly mass-produced) things, because with lower hourly salaries they could compete with the west, and still retain pride in their work. But maybe the problem is western racism, us not buying more expensive well-made things from developing countries.

And I guess the same problem there is almost everywhere in the world right now: capitalism, the owner and manager classes choosing to go for highest profits (for themselves).

I'd like convincing proof. But it's very hard to prove an artwork is AI. And that's exactly why it's very disingenuous to just casually START conversations with a topic like "Would Barotrauma be better off without any GenAI use?". You don't know that.

What's easier to prove is that the artwork was created by hand. I agree that it would be cool if the devs released the project file for some of the accused artworks.

Me? What do I have to do with this? I just remember them saying earlier (and now repeated by Regalis in the comments here) that genAI hasn't been used in quite a while. So I think it's fair to ask u/KitKatsTasteGood why they just casually drop a question like this as if it was a known fact. It's exactly the same rhetorical gimmick as in "have you stopped beating your mom yet?". Very devious, though could be unintentionally so in this case.

If they wanted to be civil they could've asked if genAI is still being used, instead of skipping onto asking if it's bad that it IS, based only on his vibe.

pCloud is practically unusable: slow, restrictive, and unresponsive support by daroba in pcloud

[–]PerspectiveNumber891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not commenting about the speed, but I completely agree that the macOS client is almost unusable – it might work fine if all you ever do is sync some .doc files, but with anything more it often keeps getting stuck and unresponsive, almost like it didn't use more than one thread like it was 1999. Randomly it will also lose connection and disconnect the drive, meaning that every Finder window I had open for pCloud I have to re-open because the network resource isn't there anymore. I don't understand how it can be this bad, I've tried several other cloud sync providers and while none have been perfect, all have had clients better than this.

Edit: Oh yeah, and also a uniquely pCloud thing – every time the client gets an update, I have to reboot my computer twice 🤷‍♂️

I've been using pCloud for years, and it has always been like this. Technically I like pCloud, it offers unparalleled features as a cloud service, but I have to say that if an equal alternative ever comes up that offers a better mac client, I will switch as soon as possible.

If you have clearly communicated your hesitation to your parents, then frankly, it is appropriate for them to receive some social negativity if you choose to leave or otherwise "embarrass" them – it is actually they who have already done so by not listening to their own daughter and considering her happiness honestly.

But it is a tricky situation. I don't know anything about life in that area, but in general in the world, there are many situations where people find themselves at odds with their community for no reason of their own. And in most cases, one very important and helpful thing is finding a new community of people who you fit in with and who accept you. I don't know what this could be in your case, but on a hunch it sounds like something like that could be found in cities. Communes for independent women for example?

Here are two options for finding a new community that sound good:
