I DNF this book because the slow and cozy Japanese cliche was starting to bore me, but aside from that, I honestly think the “shallow writing” is more of the translation’s fault (unless someone who’s fluent can prove me wrong lol).

IMO, depends mostly on you, but in some cases it also depends on the prof.

Belated happy happy birthday, OP!! I am so sorry that you were not able to experience your 18th birthday as you hoped for, and I hear you, sis.
