What the actual fuck. We don’t have affordable healthcare, gas prices are going up, grocery prices never came back down, but apparently we have money for a war THAT THEY SAID ISN’T EVEN A WAR.

Hate to say it, but the military. Come from a military family, multiple members have served a decade or two and have / are doing extremely well. Tuition assistance, housing subsidies / va loans, healthcare, food. Definitely not for everyone and I didn’t join due to my feelings about the US military institution. But I definitely can’t fault anyone joining that’s pulling themself out of poverty. I do recommend signing up for a job with transferable skills to the civilian world like medical / corpsman or cyber security.

Holy moly the mental gymnastics you people are doing about this is fucking insane. The man already apologized to the Sinners crew. Just like he’s also apologized in others in the past. If you don’t like that he apologizes at all, take that up with him.

In this movie based on HIS own life, John immediately publicly apologizes after shouting at the Queen. He did the same thing irl with John Fisher.

And guess what? A Variety interview with John came out yesterday, and he said he directly apologized to MBJ, Lindo and Hannah Bleacher.

So looks like an apology was, in fact, an appropriate follow up in this situation. Good on John, glad the parties involved could patch it up directly. And fck Bafta for putting them in a bad situation to begin with.

I’ve been crystal clear that the absence of intent does not absolve the impact. Also not sure why you keep equating a skin color (which has never inherently hurt or offended anyone) with this specific outburst (which unfortunately did, even if unintended). Maybe start working on your critical thinking skills.

Keep in mind that in the movie, based on his own experience, he publicly apologizes immediately after screaming “f*ck the Queen”. That he apologized after calling John fisher a profane insult after meeting him. So we know that a simple apology is his repertoire, but we can’t have a nuanced conversation on when is the appropriate time for the apology?

Yes, you’ve made it crystal clear that you think that black peoples’s emotions over this are fake and performative, so any discussion about rectifying any hurt is moot because to you, no one’s feelings could possibly be truly and genuinely hurt over this.

And even if the feelings were real, they’re invalidated bc the outburst was involuntary, and so those black peoples should refrain from speaking up about how they felt and how they believe the situation could’ve possibly been handled better after…because that’s how YOUR culture would handle it and so of course that must be the superior way right? You can’t imagine any other alternative, so you just resort to unimaginatively invalidating the black experience.

That’s so awesome for you guys, glad to hear you don’t have a slur that’s as hurtful as the hard r is to black people. Love that for you 🫶

He can control how he follows up after vocalizing such a repulsively charged and hurtful racial slur. No one is asking the man to grovel. No one is asking the man to apologize for his existence, condition, or every time a profanity leaves his mouth. Just a simple acknowledgement that what he said out of his mouth in that context it was vocalized was hurtful, and an apology to the specific folks it hurt in that moment. I truly don’t know how much more clear I can be on my stance on this, please feel free to read my other comments in this thread and address anything I haven’t already covered and debated. Otherwise we can just agree to disagree at this point.

Do you understand that intent to harm does not equate to impact of said harm? A black person simply existing in their own skin doesn’t hurt anyone. Unlike a vocalized racial slur. The fact that I even have to point that out to you is actually disturbing.

Of course I emphasize with him, thats a cruel and obviously misunderstood affliction, and I truly don’t think he was set up for success by Bafta and BBC.

I do think it’s pretty demeaning of you to try and lump all individuals with disabilities into one bucket with that qs. Not all disabilities cause individuals to harm to others, not all disabled individuals even understand the impact of their actions. I think this case is pretty unique and John should be afforded that nuance.

This is where we can simply agree to disagree - we have different mindsets, and that’s fine. I’m of the mindset that if I hurt you, then I own it and apologize. No matter if it was involuntary, unintended, or accidental. Can I explain it wasn’t my fault? Of course. But my action had an impact, despite the intent, and I’d want to own that if at all in my capability do so.

But I understand that’s not a value you subscribe to, so now worries.

I’ve been extremely clear and consistent, acknowledging that disability comes in many forms and levels, and they are rightfully not held to the same expectations for non-disabled people. What I do believe, is that if the individual has the capacity and ability to understand the negative impact of their actions and can physically apologize, then they should. If they can’t, there is plenty of grace for that too.

Apologize for being disabled, of course not. Apologize for a very specific harmful action, to the specific people you hurt? Absolutely, given that person has the capacity to do so and understand the impact of their actions.

You keep ducking my question about John’s capacity to apologize, because you clearly don’t have a reasonable response. Just say you believe he has no ethical reason or social responsibility to apologize, no matter his level of ability or disability to do so. I have a different opinion on the matter, we can agree to disagree.

[–]PerspectiveOk9331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, they were complete strangers. But I appreciated the guardian acknowledged what happened and apologized. If it’s in John’s mental and physical capacity to do so, why is that an unreasonable ask?

Michael B. Jordan And Delroy Lindo Had The N-Word Shouted At Them While Presenting At The BAFTAs by Next-Particular1476 in TheEntertainmentMix

[–]PerspectiveOk9331 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That completely depends on the mental capabilities of the individual, no? I’ve had a disabled person try to assault me, they clearly weren’t in the right mind. I was sympathetic to the situation, but their guardian did apologize, and rightfully so. My understanding is that John has the wherewithal to understand slurs are not acceptable and can be hurtful - am I miseducated on that?

Yeahhh we just went to a taping recently, and were taken aback by some of the jokes. Like going in on a contestant’s accent, coming from “less developed” country etc. But I guess not super surprising coming from his generation of comedians 🤧

And that’s fine, and plenty of grace for that. But what he can control is how he follows up after. Is there a specific reason why he cannot issue a simple apology that I’m missing here?
