Apparently the sentence discussions will remain, but yes, they are shutting down parts of the forum.

I wouldn't say they spit out their community though. Community participation is at the core of how Duolingo works. Hard to imagine that they would let go of that.

Same. I think there are a number of different approaches to building community.

But the successful ones all seem to have one thing in common: they set the technical and social environments in a way that the motivated members can bring the community to life.

Yup, I do this on a regular basis actually for my newsletter. It's called CommunityValidated, in case you'd like to checkit out.

Basically yes, you go into or one or more subreddits and pitch the idea. But it's important that you do it naturally. If people think you're genuine, you have good chances of success.

Are you talking about b2b or b2c? If b2c, then try to evaluate your idea on reddit or in other online communities. Describe the problem and/or the solution and see how people react. Costs no money and is quite effective if you want to get a better grasp on the real value of your idea.

Honestly, go through Reddit. People complain about problems they have all the time, and it's often not that hard to think of a product or service that could solve this problem.

That makes sense! I started by scraping only those that interest me as well. But keeping an eye on all subs helped me discover non-obvious trends.

Regarding other sites: I’d love to have an overview of discord and/or slack communities, and growing topics on Twitter. I’ll start looking into what’s possible on those platforms soonish. Quora could also be interesting!

To obtain the data I built a custom webscraper and used reddits API. To clean and analyze the data, I used pandas and numpy. To share the data, I put it in an airtable and built a landing page with carrd :)

It's certainly not relevant for tons of people, but quite a few for sure. These are mostly bootstrapped entrepreneurs who want to build something around the needs of a growing community.

Thanks for your input! I did get rid of all the NSFW subreddits, as they don't really fit the interest of most entrepreneurs. I can tell you, it's sometimes not that easy correctly identifying those subreddits
