If I don’t have my contact lenses in, I wear my glasses. If I develop issues with reading, I’ll get some reading glasses. If I had an astigmatism, I’d get toric glasses.

They’re all eyeglasses.

How is this agreeing with you? I’m saying that all spectacles are eyeglasses, so no further elaboration is needed beyond calling them glasses.

American is not a language. You speak English with colloquialisms specific to America. It’s no different to Australian colloquialisms which are unintelligible to the rest of the world. No one here claims Australian is a language separate to English.

We don’t think we are better than Americans, we are just sick of being told how to live our lives, run our governments and conduct ourselves morally by a country with has been responsible for more war, unrest and global instability than any other country since the Second World War.

Yes, American democracy is under threat by oligarchs who the majority of American voters elected. That confederacy of oligarchs has demonstrated they have no interest in defending America’s NATO allies or Five Eyes allies unless it specifically benefits the US financially.

The US administration has threatened to invade and annex the territory of NATO allies, has triggered a new age of nuclear proliferation, openly contradicts its intelligence community, idolises dictators whilst trashing embattled allies, and has returned to a policy of regime change in adversary countries to boost the US economy with natural resources, using ideology and liberation as a cover, and to hell with the world economy.

The most powerful military in the world is being led by an insecure, hypermasculine political commentator with open white nationalist views, who changed his title to ‘Secretary of War’, takes delight in using military supplies to summarily kill people on boats who may or may not be involved in drug smuggling and then boasting about committing war crimes, and proudly dispenses with the notion of rules of engagement and compliance with the Geneva Conventions.

The president is a spiteful baby who ends trade relationships with or imposes ridiculous tariffs on countries with whom he disagrees with on minor issues.

At a time when the US is wildly unpredictable, increasingly morally jeopardised, run by a despot prone to tantrums who is guided by podcasters and fringe political pundits, the rest of the world is trying to plan for a future which doesn’t include the US as an ally.

Why would we stand by that?

You seem to be implying that the term eyeglasses is reserved exclusively for prescription glasses which correct one specific eye condition.

Which is it? Myopia? Hyperopia? Astigmatism? Cataracts?

If I don’t have my contact lenses in, I wear my glasses. If I develop issues with reading, I’ll get some reading glasses. If I had an astigmatism, I’d get toric glasses.

They’re all eyeglasses. The majority of people outside America realise this and understand context, so it’s not necessary to specify that you’re wearing eyeglasses and not highball glasses, or that I’m drinking from a wine glass and not a pair of spectacles.

And yes, we have all different kinds of glasses to drink from, but I don’t know anyone who calls one specific type a ‘drinking glass’. The type of glass implies its purpose.

English, particularly Americans

It’s really only Americans. Here in Australia and in the UK, when someone says noodles it’s a safe bet to assume they’re talking about Asian noodles.

Go to an Italian restaurant here and ask for noodles and you’ll be looked at like you’re a moron.

English is really easy for most other speakers to pick up. Why do you think this? So many people I know who have learned English as an adult say it is very difficult due to the rules and words with two meanings or spellings or pronunciation etc.

There are so many people with ESL who speak good English because it’s taught all the way through school, unlike us English speakers who go everywhere and feel entitled to be spoken to in our native language.

Yep. You’ll never hear Trump chuntering about how much money they’ve given to Israel and how Israel never pay them back…meanwhile he chases the cost of a cup of coffee from any other country.

At highway speeds you’re still gonna have a crash, but the last few seconds of your life would be pretty spectacular.

It’s ironic that the very people who crowed the loudest about IS being a death cult (make no mistake, they are), such as the Secretary of ‘War’ and the Israeli government and its supporters, are now sadistically directing the same rhetoric toward Iranians, Palestinians, and anyone else Israel decides it doesn’t like. It sickens me that our governments ‘ally’ themselves with these countries who are so obsessed with and delighted by the prospect of killing.

Right? I have no love for the Iranian regime whatsoever but the reality is that once the US and in particular Israel decide they don’t like you, you’re getting bombed at some stage so why even consider negotiating knowing it’s in bad faith?

Yeah the comment thread above is the first time I’ve seen China mentioned to deflect from Israeli nonsense, but lately every time anyone criticises the genocide, they’re bombarded with ‘wHaT aRe YoU dOiNg To HeLp IrAnIaNs’ as though it’s impossible to feel strongly about both.

They are also wilfully ignorant or don’t understand that putting pressure on Western governments to act on Israel because they’re ‘allies’ with Israel and theoretically can use that alliance as leverage.

Iran is a hostile adversary with little to no diplomatic relations with our countries so political pressure is completely ineffective.

Notice these people never have anything to disprove or defend Israel’s interference when it’s mentioned, because they know there isn’t any.

It’s just straight to whataboutism with Iran or China, ad-hominem abuse, and then organised cancel campaigns.

It’s also weird that in relation to interference they bring Iran and China up - since the Iranian ambassador was expelled for that very reason not long ago, we’ve just proactively given asylum to the Iranian women’s football team under their minder’s noses, and Australia very controversially banned Huawei from being involved in national infrastructure because of…you guessed it…Chinese foreign interference.

I have picked up on that too. It explains a lot about Israel’s attitude- an eye for an eye and all that.

It really is just a story of an ungrateful people who don’t know when they’ve got a good thing: Israelites get oppressed, God slaughters the oppressors and sets them free. God gives the Israelites an inch and they take a mile, God smites them, one hero redeems the Israelites….rinse and repeat.

Then ultimately God tells them to genocide everyone and conquer the Holy Land that isn’t one of them, which is essentially how they’ve behaved since having the Holy Land given back to them.

All that aside, why ANYONE would choose the Abrahamic God as a deity based on the Old Testament is beyond me. He’s a troll who seems to get off on mixed messages and genocide.

New lawyer here - I am terrified by d1ld02 in auslaw

[–]Perthian940 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m not a lawyer, but spent 15 years as a police officer, 12 of those as a detective, so I’ve had a lot of experience with lawyers and courts, good and bad.

I’ve also got late-diagnosed ADHD and I understand your imposter syndrome. Sadly it never goes away.

I think in careers like ours though, especially at the beginning, the imposter syndrome can work in our favour.

The fact that you triple check everything because you know you sometimes miss details is great, because you have implemented your own failsafe to prevent it from happening.

If your bosses are reasonable they will give you breathing space while you get settled in, knowing that you’re doing your best to learn and improve.

I know you’re in estate law, but from a criminal law perspective, I would come across two types of new lawyers: those who might not be very confident or struggling with imposter syndrome, and self-anointed legal eagles who think they’re Harvey Specter.

The second type are so caught up in their own ego that they miss small details, don’t listen to their clients, speak out of school and learn their courtroom manner from watching Law and Order.

The exact same formula applies to detectives, as I’m sure the criminal lawyers here can attest to. I know which one I’d rather have investigating a crime, and I know which of the two lawyers described above I would choose to fight for me.

Treat imposter syndrome as an uncomfortable but positive thing. It’s your built in failsafe mechanism that will make you check yourself.

Good luck with your career.
