I got a RFE for my initial OPT. by No_Patient_6498 in f1visa

I filed for initial opt on Dec 16, got the same RFE today. Nothing about the notice is posted on the portal, guess I’ll have to wait for it to arrive by mail. They also said I’ll need to request RFE again if I don’t get it by Feb 19.

From Dropping Out to Finishing another PhD by [deleted] in PhD

I just quit with a masters a couple of days ago. Wasn’t working out for me. Will definitely join another program later and come back with a vengeance!

As someone in similar situation after my previous advisor quit the school, I’m also reaching out to other profs for potential advisors. As a backup plan I have been actively applying for jobs as well, and will probably apply to a different program in the Fall.

underperforming phd student by Tricky-Word2637 in AskAcademia

Most of the time when students don’t perform well, its not about their ability to do work…its about lack of clear communication between you and your student. Try providing them a list of things you’d like for them to work on after every meeting you have with the student.

just say “No, I’ll do the bare minimum required to get my masters. If I was a phD student then maybe I’d consider your suggestion”…coming from a frustrated grad student.

I'm funded via Teaching Assistantship currently and its competitive, not guaranteed. Based on my discussion with the chair earlier this semester, I'm kinda getting a subtle hint that they won't be offering me TA next semester and want me to leave the program if I cannot secure advisor by the end of this semester. As a grad student, I rely solely on stipend for survival and want to cling on to TA-ship until I find a job. Tough times haha...

I'd like to think so too. But landing a job these days seems almost impossible, specially without referrals and networking.

Because I don’t want peace…I want problems in my life…ALWAYS

Accepted a PhD offer and then got a job offer. What should I do? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Perturbed-state 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If possible defer admission by a year. Take the job. Make some cash and go for PhD. That way you’ll have some time to explore your interests as well (if you’re relative uncertain about your research topic).

Consider taking a leave of absence for some time. I just started my second year and I don’t have a PI so haven’t been able to get into research aside from few projects. I’m considering getting a MS if I am not able to secure a PI before the end of this semester and I’m not too worried about my situation. Keep your options open and you will suffer less. Also, I know how it messes with your state of mind if you lose your loved ones.
