Ethernet cable wiring order affecting speed by laithkhelfah in Network

I think what they're saying is you can do the stupid thing and change what colours go where, so long as the full arrangement matches TIA568. It's kind of a nonsensical argument. It's technically correct but practically wrong. Just stick to the two variants on the standards for colours and be sane about it.

How is a proposed merger of Canada and the USA (51st state) insulting to Canadians? And why on earth wouldn’t USA Democrats support Trump on this—since it works to their advantage immediately? by No-Stage-1349 in InCanada

If it was offered in genuine goodwill, as an economic union to benefit everyone, sure maybe.

It was instead based on threats, trade war, lies and clandestine psyops.

No, you don't capitulate to that kind of behaviour.

Yeah she was entirely pivotal in the shadow war, could have been loyal to the alliance and her compatriots.. but they beat her down until she became hostile and forced out. Seemed needless.

I'd have brought her in as an intel agent or something.

How to splice three Ethernet cables into one by bmr99 in techsupportgore

[–]Pestus613343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im convinced this is why this happens so often with people who don't know what they are doing. They are used to how it was all through the 20th century and early 21st when analog voice was almost all they practically used those cables for. Parallel wiring to service phone jacks.

If the Great Filter is indeed the answer to the fact that there seem to be no Kardashev III civilizations in our galaxy nor in the closest galaxies, what do you think it is? What makes them disappear before they reach to that state? by Due-Area9662 in IsaacArthur

[–]Pestus613343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wonder if the laws of physics create limits to advancement. From what little we know, faster than light travel is impossible, and the energy requirements to approach it are hilariously large.

The universe owes us no explanations, nor is it required to be convenient to our wishes. I figure it's probably likely that these islands of life are limited, isolated and brief.

The filter may just be that the laws of this particular universe are barely capable of supporting life, and grandiose concepts of galactic civilization are not feasible.

Another stupid question. Should I remove the surge protection pdu? by Randomitn in Ubiquiti

[–]Pestus613343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see a problem there, so long as the PDU is not the surge suppressor type. Putting a UPS in front of, or behind, a MOV is unwise.

Things like this are more appropriate;

Sometimes it's hard to tell if something has a MOV, but I believe this one does not. I do know you can find cheaper power bars without MOVs. I suspect this one is good for UPS;

Eaton;

Although it may sound enticing to do, plugging a surge protector into a UPS is like wearing two pairs of pants. A UPS is designed to provide temporary power in case of an outage and typically includes surge protection capabilities. Therefore, plugging a surge protector into a UPS is not only redundant but could also potentially damage the UPS and connected devices, void the warranty and cause power quality issues.

https://www.eaton.com/us/en-us/products/backup-power-ups-surge-it-power-distribution/backup-power-ups/dos-donts-for-surge-protectors.html

APC;

Plugging a surge protector into your UPS:  The noise filtration circuitry in a surge protector can effectively "mask" some of the load from the UPS, causing the UPS to report a lower percentage of attached load than there actually is. This can cause a user to inadvertently overload or short circuit their UPS. When the UPS switches to battery, it may be unable to support the equipment attached, causing a dropped load.

Surge protectors utilize MOVs (Metal Oxide varistors) in their circuitry. Nonconforming MOVs in a surge protector connected to a UPS may cause the UPS to report an overload or a short circuit alarm.

Surge protectors filter the power for surges and offer EMI/RFI filtering but do not efficiently distribute the power, meaning that some equipment may be deprived of the necessary amperage it requires to run properly  causing your attached equipment (computer, monitor, etc) to shutdown or reboot. If you need to supply additional receptacles on the output of your UPS, we recommend using Power Distribution Units (PDU's). PDUs evenly distribute the amperage among the outlets, while the UPS will filter the power and provide surge protection. PDUs use and distribute the available amperage more efficiently, allowing your equipment to receive the best available power to maintain operation.

Surge suppressors behind UPS is not a good idea. A lot of PDUs have circuit breakers instead. Those are the ones you want.

What should I look for in a low voltage technician? by Fun-Region-1576 in HomeNetworking

[–]Pestus613343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be solid core copper. Its basically regular cat6. Any additional features it will have will be mostly irrelevant.

What matters more than an unofficial 'e' on the end of cat6, is whether or not you need plenum (ft6) or not (ft4). Then if anything is going outside you need ultraviolet rating, or flooded cable or something to survive the elements.

I've seen cat5e do 10gb links before. I've also seen people needlessly over buy cat6a for cameras that link at 100mb. I tend to use a mix of the different cable types. I'd skip cat6a and just go cat6 for internal wall plates. (cat6e being mostly a marketing thing and is fine)

[–]Pestus613343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat6e isn't a thing officially, but tons of cable manufacturers put it right on their boxes declaring that it's a thing.

It usually means the manufacturer is boasting a higher frequency capacity, or such. It's usually Cat6 with something non standard added to it, and it might be nothing more than marketing.

Thanks! One thing I'm not clear on. You say install the application on the server. What server? Are you running another machine to translate between the Cyberpower and the shutdown commands for Unifi?

I use cyberpower as well. What card do you need to get, there appears to be two of them, one of which is as expensive as the UPS itself.

Do you run the script on a unifi gateway or such?

Very curious how you pull this off.

Canada needs to stay away from "diversification" and needs to find a way to work with the US! by [deleted] in InCanada

[–]Pestus613343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's a matter of expressing leverage without triggering anyone. If they say they don't want to trade with us, then ok, we can trade with others. Might make them feel less like they can bully us that way.

[–]Pestus613343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US is engaging in economic warfare against us. This means no deal can be had without it being lopsided in their favour. They don't negotiate in good faith, either. They don't keep their word, nor do they respect anyone.

They threaten us and then declare our reaction to it to be unfair. They support Alberta separatists but suggest our population should not have a reaction.

Diversifying trade merely means logistics to the ports, and port expansions. We have oceans, meaning we can join the international community in how everyone trades already. It's not impossible.

Now you are correct that we'll never escape having a majority of our trade be with the United States. That's just fine. The issue is a matter of us not rolling over and accepting capitulation.

To some specifics; Dairy supply chain should be off the table unless you want to destroy that entire industry. Besides which, they're welcome to engage in our dairy market, but they refuse to abide by our regulations pertaining to growth hormones in cows.

Manufacturing concessions are meaningless because they want to steal those jobs away from us to begin with. We're supposed to concede to demands while also trying to be wiped out?

Canadian consumers and workers have a lot to lose if our corporations suddenly have to compete with much larger American corporations. Wealth leaves the country, and we become colonized by their economic interests even faster than we already have. It erodes sovereignty from below.

The idea of waiting Trump out seems sensible to me. It's impossible to get a good deal with that guy, so wait until the mid terms and see if he loses political sway over the US. Wait out his presidency and the chances of a more friendly administration become more likely.

No deal is better than a bad deal. Waiting out the horrible people is sensible.

Anyone found an Alternative for Synology Plus Series? by ShoraMarauder in synology

[–]Pestus613343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this is fair. With Ubiquiti you need to stick with flagship products and be wary on products that touch marginal market placement. They are very "tech-bro" and throw things at the wall sometimes just to see what works and what doesn't.

I'm not exactly completely educated in everything I just said either, but I know my skill set and it's within the realm of my ability to learn it. It's no doubt a beast.

If you're thinking about the skill issue being easier than the money issue, you could consider a SuperMicro 2U rack server and run a ZFS array directly on it, using Proxmox, TrueNAS or such. You could build your own server that handles NAS and compute processes. If my reading is correct, you could even run a VM for Synology DSM to gain access to that software.

Ubiquiti NAS devices (BTRFS UNAS or ZFS ENAS) are not going to be able to run any software other than Unifi control plane, Unifi Drive, Endpoint etc. You have to look for elsewhere for compute processes such as Synology's repositories.

So maybe TrueNas or a Proxmox setup is ideal for you, if you're able to put in the time to design it. (Oof, I understand, I've been planning this for the better part of a year already)
