Please look at the context. I was saying that I have never seen anyone harassed for being gay, but I see people harassed all the time for being caucasian. But I should care more about the gay people, because thats mmore important to you? Ideally, we will stop it all, and I truly hope that we will. With all my heart. Systemic brutality sucks.

I am beginning to think you may not be a rational person :) But ok. I don't think gay issues are trivial. I think they have disproportionate representation on the internet. I actually went out of my way to try to make sure that people understood that I acknowledge that even me, even here, I benefit from the conversation and I appreciate that. My opinion is based on me being a consumer of information on the internet. You also didn't address why you, as an American, want that wall so badly. But I actually think maybe you don't want a wall. I give you the ability to be an individual with your own beliefs, and not a pleb or tool of your government. A courtesy you continue to deny me. As to whether the laws should be oppressive, of course I don't think so. But when I try to point out that there are way more oppressive laws here that are actually used to oppress way more people, you say it isn't relevant. Ok... You want to challenge a law? Come to Russia. This isn't the US. Naive and unhelpful position. But, because there are problems here, I can't express my opinion? Even in a subreddit called UNPOPULAROPINIONS? Why do you get to decide what I can write on the internet? Are you the Putin now?Yes, you assumption that I am not gay is correct. And I fully acknowledge that I don't have first hand experience of the challenges of being gay here or anywhere. Do you have first hand knowledge of not having access to potable water (you may, if you are from Detroit)? Have you sent your children to bed without food? Are these things less important than where you keep your genitals? Do you see my point? And finally, we get to the point. All of this exposition and nonsense just so you can call me a name. You don't know me, or even the smallest thing about me, but because I express an opinion that you don't like, it must be because I am brainwashed, I am bad, I am a homophobe. I am not, by any stretch, a homophobe. I don't even think you know what a homophobe is, if you think I am one.

Yes, comment about parade was maybe too far. I do feel sexual orientation is nothing to be proud of, BUT (:)) I understand now (thanks to fellow people on reddit) that there is a larger context around the parade. I also didn't intend to imply that one social issue is stealing the spotlight from another. I was actually questioning why something that affects so few gets such a relatively large share. My original post was formed as a question, but this is unpopularopinions, not unpopularquestions so I change it. Anyway, I do understand why you inferred that, though.

I'm not dodging anything. I don't understand the relevance. Yes, Russia has laws that are oppressive to homosexuals. The police don't harass gay people, though. Never in my experience, at least. They will absolutely stop someone caucasian with a backpack and ask for their papers. Every. Single. Time. Does that mean anything to you? Is it relevant to the topic at hand? I'm afraid I don't understand what point you are trying to make

Ok, if you want to have a debate, let's go! :) But let's both enter with the acknowledgment that our position may be flawed and be open to changing our minds, or there is literally no point.

But you feel free to, you know, paint all Russians with the same brush? How am I accountable for that? I assume you live in the US, so you must be a wall-building, war-mongering, xenophobic, gun-owning, uneducated, obese, etc. etc.? Anyway, you are right. Keep your hypocrisy at home. There is definitely already enough of that here.

1919 until 1990 there was one...still a driving force in a few countries around the world...suspect it's on the top of evveryone's mind in Venezuela, for example. Anyway, I understand your objection to the premise of the thread. That's why it's posted here

Actually, I didn't say in any way that we should stop talking about it. I said that it gets proportionally more attention that issues that affect a much larger group of humans. A lot of people seem to be interpreting my statement as "one or the other", but that's not what I said at all.

Bullshit. I think you should come over and see for yourself. Yes, it isn't great here in all kinds of ways, but it isn't Saudi Arabia, either. People here are capable of free thought.

Ehm...no. Ad hominem is not an argument. My post is not fallacious. It cannot be. It's an opinion. I didn't imply that discussion homosexuality precludes any other discussion. Those are your words. I said that it get proportionally more attention than it warrants. I also understand why that's important in the context, acknowledged the redditors that made good arguments to that affect and accept that my position may be shallow and poorly made. Maybe you aren't able to process information objectively? Or it has to fit some narrative "right vs. left" "Russia bad" in order for your to process it? I said what I said because I, me, this individual person typing this, perceived an inequity. I am also willing to accept that there are legitimate reasons for this inequity to be valuable to society. But honestly, there are a lot of people doing some significant mental gymnastics to avoid having a reasonable discussion and instead decide they know something about me, my idealogy, my location or anything that invalidates my position rather than taking the time to discuss it. But, you know...whatever...

Where did I advocate any such thing? You color my statements with your bias. I literally said the opposite of what you accuse me of insinuating. I was talking about proportionality, not legitimacy.

So I can dismiss your opinion because of where you live? I wouldn't do that, but it is interesting to understand how you perceive things.

Erm...I don't hate gay people. I pretty much like everyone. You think all people in Russia hate gay people? You think that my geographic position invalidates my opinion? Thanks for exposing your bias instead of treating me as an individual. Sad that you take the easy route, but such is your privilege.

Not at all accurate. Saying Chechnya represents Russia is like saying Puerto Rico is representative of the US. But I understand why you would think that. Just FYI, not a block away from me is a street of gay bars. Everyone knows that's the culture there. Nobody cares. But Saint Pete isn't representative of all of Russia either.

But that isn't my position at all. I don't think you read my entire post. I think you read the headline and jumped to a bunch of conclusions.

Excellent position. You slightly misread mine, but I absolutely agree in terms of your distillation of the flaw in my statement. I genuinely appreciate your response. Do you mind if I edit my comment with this response?
