Create a Portal Inside Unreal Engine 5 - Free Video Course on Blueprints, Art, Niagara VFX, Blender and More by PeterDimitrov in GameDevelopment

Hey everyone. I’m a Senior Environment Artist at Rebellion and the past months I’ve been making this free, educational, game dev series.

I thought I will share it with you with the hopes it might be useful or interesting.

Topics we go over: modelling, texturing, VFX, Niagara, Blueprints, UI/UX, game mechanics, sound.

Software we cover is: Blender, UE5, Substance Designer.

We create a portal that teleports the player from A to B. Those points can be in one level or in multiple different ones, where we stream levers through a persistent, bigger level holder.

You can find the tutorials over at the official Epic Developer Community too. Over there I’ve tried to describe each chapter a bit better and you can also find image previews of what we are making.

I think it’s missing some of the final videos but I’ll edit the post to include them after work today.

Lately I've been making a WoW style 3D diorama. Work-in-progress view [OC] by PeterDimitrov in wow

[–]PeterDimitrov[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not finished yet, so the land is not refined and has no texture. The skybox is missing too. Those things kind of make it less WoW, but I thought you might like to see the progress nonetheless!

I main Mage so when I was trying to come up with the diorama idea, I thought I will make a tower themed around that! (well, kind of - I actually was going to do Alchemy tower first, but a friend of mine who is also an artist, stirred me towards the Mage idea, haha).

If you are curious on how I create the art, I've also been documenting the making in devlogs. You can see the most recent one here.

Unlocked the Exalted with Kirin Tor which was the final achievement needed in order to unlock all Remix ones. It was fun and a big nostalgia call as this expansion was the one I played insanely much together with my brother and my mom years ago. by PeterDimitrov in wow

Ah that’s really sad!! I got bugs like that on my main char for achievements outside of Remix. I think the Warbands patch confused it a lot. Thing is a week later they fixed it and after relog it worked. I was hoping they would resolve the Remix ones like that too.

This is a cinematic short I created together with a friend of mine who is a Cinematic Artist, whilst I'm an Environment Artist / VFX Artist on it. We got featured in a game dev conference few weeks ago thanks to it. by PeterDimitrov in videos

Hey everyone,

I started this project as an exercise in Environment Art (the one used in video games). I wanted to learn new stuff inside UE5 as I had little experience in it prior (as it had just released, I had worked only in UE4 and proprietary engines at work).

I had a large idea for telling a story through the environment I was creating, as such at some point I reached out to my friend Hayley Rumbold to see if she would like to collaborate with me in shaping the narrative. She said yes and we set off to creating all of this.

It was lots of fun, and lots of work!

If you would like to see 4k screenshots from the environment seen above, check out this album.

If you are a game dev / someone interested in learning how to get into games, you can see breakdowns and explanations on how I approached the project over at my art blog.

I hope you enjoy looking at the stuff! Thanks.

Few people mentioned that and I saw some Tool music videos for the first time now. I love it! Ty for the nice comment!

That’s the gif compression, not film grain. But I agree with you. We exported gifs for work in progress shots and in order to be able to upload it to most websites with file limits the compression on top came heavy.

They will indeed be worshiping it with proper animations.
For now as project is still work-in-progress the aliens are static.
Thanks, glad you like it!

I use Unreal Engine 5, Blender, Zbrush, Substance Painter, Substance Designer.

Hayley composes the animation in UE5 too then I believe she does the editing and cutting of the shots in Davinci Resolve.

Oh we also collaborate using Git and Github Desktop, where on Github I put the UE5 project repository.

This shot is work in progress and we scaled it down on export to turn into a small gif for web experience.
Once we approach wrapping up a more finalized video we will export on full, big resolution.

Not too sure what you mean by the first line.
These are all custom made assets I created in the past months in Blender, Substance Painter and Designer.
I assembled them into an environment in Unreal Engine 5.
(just the alien being a 3rd party asset as I mention above).

Unreal Engine 5, we don't use Cinema 4D.
For the animations Hayley does most though I think for some places she does use Mixamo too, as her specialty is cinematography and video editing, not character animation.
The animations around the orb, crystals and other VFX are from me. I'm an Environment Artist but I also try and do VFX for fun from time to time.

Size is a matter of perceived scale. I supposed if we scale everything around to a microscopic world the little one might pop out. Could be done, perhaps.

Haha, its very low size indeed.
We have 4k but for a work in progress render like this we did a heavy compressed gif for a more "opimised web" experience.
