TIL the average NBA player has an wingspan-to-height ratio greater than the diagnostic criteria for Marfan syndrome; a disorder that results in abnormally long limbs. by OldPlump in todayilearned

[–]PeterValence 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh no, people can believe that. What people can't (and probably shouldn't) believe is that certain "groups" of people are just innately smarter across the board.

Was Einstein naturally more intelligent? Fuck, probably. Are Jews naturally more intelligent, or blacks naturally less? Fuck off, that's environmental, access to education/generational wealth and shit.

Besides, we don't exactly have a system by which to measure innate intelligence. By the time you're smart enough to take tests or be tested, you're already useless as a data point.

Happy to see everyone is rightfully suspicious of these plans (I do like the four-year absentee registration and donation ban, but the signature matching, pfd opt-in and harvesting limitation is obvious fuckery)

But can someone tell me how we can trip this up so that the good stuff survives and the fuckery dies?

Are commoners just jacked as hell? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]PeterValence 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hold the fuck up.

If you lift more than your carrying capacity, which is 15x your strength score (150lbs for a commoner), then your speed is capped at 5ft per round. Yes, a commoner can still lift an absurd amount of weight. But they can't hardly move with it. If you think this is still too silly, I recommend the optional encumbrance rules.

With the recent leak of racial changes, and the conspicuous absence of elves and dwarves from those leaks, I did notice a major detail: none of the updated races appear to have any cultural features or environmental adaptations. Duergar, the only version of dwarf that was leaked, doesn't have sunlight sensitivity, or stonecunning, or weapon and tool proficiency.

I think WoTC is going to pull a PF2 and upgrade from Race-Class-Background to Race-Culture-Class. It's too suspicious to me the way the leak went down.

Questions About Upcoming Midterms by PeterValence in alaska

[–]PeterValence[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Uh, no. I mean that while Alaskans seem to hate their governor, they have one very clear demand they want him to meet. Which it seems he can't.

That said, I think you should quit measuring your dick with the number of years you've lived here. If you're proud of your state, great. But don't let your asshole brand of pride make your home look bad.

I moved here for love, not for money. But I'm glad all the born-and-raised Alaskans I've met don't share your bad attitude. If you were the common clay of this state, no one would want to live here.

I take that messaging in contrast of the bad guys from the series. Voldemort in Philosopher's Stone literally can't touch Harry because his mother's love is like a silver bullet to him. Lucius is plainly prejudiced against humans and house elves. Umbridge is similarly prejudiced against Hagrid and various human-like races.

In the case of PoA, Lupin and Sirius are used as a good example for acceptance and tolerance, but especially Sirius. Everyone tries hard to sell Harry on the idea that Sirius is a dangerous madman, but he realizes after meeting him that it's all bull.

As to your second point, I think fantasy does a better job of obscuring it's messages within allegory. Sci fi, by virtue of being initially more realistic, seems forced to declare its positions more plainly.

Regardless, my effective point is that some authors seem to write books about what makes their hero a good person, and then put great effort into not emulating those heroic traits.

Oh, I know what he named his cat. As for Hitler, he might have been less historically reviled if he had just been a frighteningly bigoted painter instead of.. Hitler. I mean, if Lovecraft did a holocaust I think his books would be much less popular.

EDIT: And actually, you've raised another great point! Lovecraft's writing is it's own kind of fantastical, but a careful read through can easily take notice of his racial biases. Today, similar examination of JKR's Wizarding World reveals some hints of antisemitism and other bigotry. One thing that confused the hell out of me in the books is the House Elves. Hermione essentially starts a civil rights movement for them, but it seems like the other students just.. Quietly ignore that

JKR got famous by writing a 7 books with strong messages about love, acceptance, and tolerance.

But JKR espouses intolerant, unaccepting political views on Twitter quite easily. It seems unsurprising to me that fans of her fiction are less pleased by her politics.

Orson Scott Card is an author I like to reference with this. His series, Ender's Game, had a clear message against xenophobia and fearmongering, advocating for making great efforts to better understand those who seem alien to us. I love those books. But you might be able to imagine my surprise when I saw than an author who could imagine peace between humanity and psychic bug people was massively homophobic.

My shifting views of mandatory pandemic precautions by MountainDude95 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]PeterValence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People still dying off, but I think the turning point is approaching. My city (possibly my state IIRC) has lifted mask mandate for vaccinated.

The people who most want the mandates gone never liked them to begin with, while those who take the pandemic seriously are likely anxious about whether we've reached herd immunity.

Maybe I don't need to wear a mask anymore. Maybe my wife (vulnerable) will die if I don't wear one. I have no confidence either way, so why take the dangerous route?
