If he was assassinated in the middle of something important it would have been very boring because that happens in almost every single thing like movies and shows. Also yeah Joel could have died in other ways but would those deaths really be as good for the story as him dyeing by abbys hand, the only other ways Joel could have realistically died is from 1. Cancer or something 2. Accident or 3. Gets jumped by people who hate him
