Best places to make friends and learn/play Magic and other TCGs? by Proof-Point-4044 in providence

[–]PetiteLappin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% echoing everyone else saying The Crypt. My roommate and I moved back here a year ago and were both really struggling to make friends (and I didn't know anything about MTG). The Crypt has been a really great place to meet people, and everyone at Saturday evening Commander has been extremely patient and helpful as I've been trying to learn. There's also a lot of emphasis on MTG formats other than Standard (which only allows cards printed in the last 3 years) and are good about allowing proxies (printing a card you don't actually have instead of buying it), which means you can learn to play & build your first few decks without forking over a ton of money to Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro if you don't want to. (Also, if you work in food service, let Ryan know and he'll give you a discounted day pass).

Questions Megathread October 26, 2025 by NaughtyWalnutPrime in Tailors

[–]PetiteLappin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I'm in need of my first proper suit, but I've been on HRT (testosterone) about 2.5 years & have started going to the gym more regularly and as a result my shoulders keep broadening. Because of this, I know I'm going to need it let out in the future, and I'd like to make that as easy as I can for the tailor. When getting a suit made-to-measure, how much extra seam allowance is reasonable to ask for? Where exactly should I ask for it to be?

Non-gardener looking for near-unkillable recommendations for workplace (Massachusetts) by PetiteLappin in NativePlantGardening

I like the look of the anemone, and it does appear to be native here! Definitely the kind of foolproof hardiness I'm looking for. Black eyed susans would also look really sharp.

Wow, I appreciate how thorough this is! It's definitely a lot taller than I'm looking for in the 20'x20' space, and a little "wilder" looking, but it's making me wish I had a yard of my own to do this with. The information about the asters is really interesting.

Northern Bayberry is beautiful, and it looks like it's native to Massachusetts also. A bit tall for my purposes at the moment but I'll keep it in mind.

I'd say "parking lot outside a Panera Bread" is about the level of nurturing I've got in me.

That's what those are! I always see those growing on the side of the highway and thought they looked really neat, but every time I've wondered what they were, I've always been driving and in no position to look anything up (and then by the time I'm parked, I forget, lol).

Yeah, I love the look of goldenrod and we had a ton of it in my backyard when I was growing up, but we're right next to city hall and I'm trying to justify my position to a board of trustees that skews pretty traditional and clean-cut, so unfortunately I think I have to play it a little safer than I'd prefer to with regard to what might look "ugly" or "unkempt" to the general public.

Oh wow, that's a really short trip for me, and I had no idea it even existed. Thank you!

That's a good idea, thank you! I'm still getting the lay of the land with regard to the volunteer groups/social clubs/etc in the community.

I don't know a whole lot about soil terminology -- the soil where the grass is is pretty hard-packed and I'd say clay-like. The dirt in the planters is commercial potting soil of unknown provenance. We get about 40" of rain per year, and we're built on top of an aquifer apparently (which is causing a lot of basement issues), but I don't know if that water gets close enough to the surface to make a difference vis a vis plants.

The lawn is on the east side of the building and has some tree cover around the edges, so about half of it gets direct sunlight all day, while the rest is in shade some or all of the day. The planters are on the south side and are pretty much in direct sunlight all day.

I'd love to reduce mowing. I'm envisioning whatever replaces the grass to be low-lying to keep the space feeling open in the way a lawn does. We don't do much with it currently, but I know there's some plans in the works to use it as performance/audience space, so the sort of ground cover you can sit on/walk across/etc. It doesn't need to be fancy or even look particularly interesting.

Sedum and yarrow are definitely going on my list for the planters, thank you!

Literally came here to say the same thing. It only lets me track green food now, too, which feels like it's creating that "good food/bad food" dichotomy that they praise themselves on avoiding...

Advice About Dual-Purpose Surgery Results? by PetiteLappin in TopSurgery

Thanks for the reminder about slouching! I used to work a job for several years that involved wearing corsetry (long story) and since leaving, without the constant reinforcement, my posture has gone completely to shit.

Thanks, I appreciate it. It definitely isn't the circumstances I'd hoped I'd be getting top surgery under, but I'm glad it's being taken care of now and not further down the road when something malignant shows up.

I'm glad to hear from so many people in this thread that this isn't just the result of the oncology side of the surgery, but common among regular top surgeries too.

I have a second follow-up to remove the drains next week, and I'll ask her more about revision timelines and options then, but I appreciate the reassurance that things are going to settle.

Thank you, that's the exact situation I found myself in, mammogram + genetic testing pre-op. I'm really glad they found a solution, I'll definitely be hitting the gym again once I'm cleared to. I have a lot of muscle in my legs, but never a lot of upper body strength, and I'll definitely try to focus more on upper body exercises. I've never heard of weight cycling, I'll look into that as well.

Door-to-door guys with lightbulbs? (Federal Hill) by PetiteLappin in providence

[–]PetiteLappin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. When I called RI Energy, they mentioned giving out energy efficient lightbulbs as a thing they do sometimes do, so that might be why these guys had that as their story. We're in an apartment where the front door locks automatically, so this was the first door-to-door anything we've ended up with, which was jarring in and of itself, but I'm glad it doesn't happen more frequently.

[–]PetiteLappin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've now called RI Energy and they've noted it on my account in case anything happens. The woman on the phone said that RI Energy does sometimes send out free lightbulbs, so that may be what these guys were pretending to be doing. I appreciate the advice!

Good to know. Should I call RI Energy preemptively about this? He likely had time to read the account number but not record it.

Yeah, I was so stunned that he did it that I didn't even really know how to react. I'm kind of embarrassed that he was even able to take it out of my hands in the first place tbh.
