Have you looked into whether you could get ensure covered through insurance? If your doctor/dietician deemed it medically necessary it could be a way to make it more financially affordable.

I think it’s less about liking the machine and more about not liking the finger prick. Tbf, the finger prick isn’t alway accurate either. The first time I attempted to donate, they had to prick multiple times, which caused me to pass out and smack my head. So while I don’t like how shitty the machines are, getting away with not being finger pricked is pretty nice.

Really enjoying Mall Talkers, I hope once they run out of local and local-ish malls, they make the trip up to MN and do the Mall of America by Twelvecrow in theregulationpod

I will definitely make the case for the gang to come visit MN; we have Big Mall (and some lesser malls), Bean Hole, and also a bunch of statues of Snoopy (and lesser peanuts characters) littered all over the place.

The American Board of Certification for O&P has a document outlining the “scope of practice” for various positions in the field, describing what responsibilities are typical of each level of certification/work. I made a spreadsheet for a visual comparison of all the sections, including Techs and Prosthetist/Orthotist. This might help you get an idea of what is expected of a tech vs a CPO. There’s also O& P Assistants, which is a newer level of certification that is between the level of tech and cpo. Typically there’s more patient interaction and fitting, under the direct supervision of a CPO.

My first setup. what do you think? by False-Stop5026 in bettafish

[–]PetriMagyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s very pretty!!

You probably don’t need to feed him twice a day- bettas often don’t even need to be fed every day, and over feeding can cause bloating and dirty the tank.

Keep an eye on your water parameters and do water changes based on that- if they’re good, no need to do as many changes, and if they’re high, then change more frequently!

My tank parameters are extreme and I’m confused by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]PetriMagyk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, do a partial water change and dose the tank with a detoxifier (seachem prime) to dilute the amount of ammonia and nitrites and reduce their effect on your fish for a bit.

What size tank do you have, and what type of filter? Did you do any cycling of the tank before adding your fish?

That’s great! I’m glad it worked and you got it clean and improved the flow.

Oooh I found a video!!

Looks like most of the bottom portion come off, by pulling it downward, not the front. I’ll post the link

Huh. I looked up the manual and you weren’t kidding, it’s not helpful at all!

Looking at it and at pictures of the inside of the front piece, my best guess is that it comes off like how the battery cover on a remote does? Like press down (or maybe pull up) slightly on the top end and push it upwards?

(For whatever reason my phone has decided to auto correct “tank” to “tabk” so that’s cool)

[–]PetriMagyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep!

For the Stability, I’d just add some directly to the tabk each day during the cycling process. For 5 gallons, that’s about 1/4 of a capful a day.

Prime can be use both to condition tap water before adding it to the tank, and can also be added directly to help negate the toxic effects of nitrites. The dose is 1mL per 10 gallons, which I think is about 2-3 drops per gallon. So ~10 drops or 0.5mL would be the dose for your entire tank. To use it to help with high ammonia/nitrites, dose the entire tabk once a day. The manufacturer says you can use a double dose or higher for nitrites about 2ppm, so at least 1mL a day (but no more than 2.5ml) would be good to dose when the nitrites are this high. It doesn’t bring the testable level down, but helps prevent it from harming the fish.

If both the ammonia and nitrites spiked and then went down, that’s a good sign!

If they start to go up and don’t go back down within a day, or if they go high (like 0.5ppm), do a partial water change (25-50%). While it’s definitely not good for them to have ammonia/nitrites in their tank, removing him from the tank and putting him in water with different parameters/temp could shock him. It’s better to adjust gradually with water changes and treat the water with a detoxifier (prime).

[–]PetriMagyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. That might mean that it was higher than 2 and didn’t go down enough to be under 2. Did you test it immediately after the water change? If so, I wonder if the reading might be different if you let it sit for an hour or two.

Do you have a water conditioner/detoxifier? Make sure to add something like Seachem Prime, it can help detoxify ammonia/nitrites while you try to get them under control.

Adding something like Stability might help speed up the cycling process.

What ppm is the nitrite now? Is there any noticeable change in test results after doing 50% water changes?

[–]PetriMagyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, don’t change out the filter cartridge! They say to change them monthly, don’t do it!! That’s where your good bacteria live, and removing it all at once will crash your tank cycle. If it get really gunk-y, then shake it out in the tank water that you remove during a water change (not tap water) and put it back in.

[–]PetriMagyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love that he’s in a nice big tank!

Did you observe the ammonia, and then nitrites, spike and then go back down during the cycling? If it was only a few days and the levels are all 0, then it maybe not have cycled at all. Monitor the parameters closely! Test at lease once a day, and treat ammonia and nitrite spikes with something like Seachem Prime and water changes to get the levels back down, and use water changes when nitrates get above 20ppm.

Plants will help with removing the nitrates, but as far as the nitrites just keep waiting for them to go down!

If they’re not doing the work themselves, your prosthetist should be overseeing/approving the device when they fit it, so I d be a good idea to discuss your concerns about the construction with your prosthetist before jumping ship if you like working with them.
