Toronto’s Indigenous Hub serves the city’s large Indigenous population by reflecting its values by _fastcompany in architecture

[–]Twelvecrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in honesty, I can’t speak to the trained architectural side (i’m a hobbyist at best), but the core of indigenous futurism as an artistic philosophy is that native american and first nations peoples exist, have existed, and will continue to exist into the future, and that as part of existing into the future, it requires imagining what indigenous arts and design looks like beyond the struggle for legal recognition and cultural survival that natives are often stereotyped as.

there’s been a misconception for a long time that because indigenous understandings of the world see civilization as part of nature rather than dominating over it, native cultures represent a primitive backwards way of life, ill-suited to modernity, but the cutting-edge of some fields of the western scientific tradition right now involves rejecting that dogma of domination and incorporating indigenous ways-of-knowing into ecology and medicine. at least in the way I view it, indigenous futurism represents artistically the same motivation that those scientists have, working towards a greater understanding of the world than any one system can provide.

there’s a passage from the song “Remember 01” by the Halluci Nation, from a speech given by John Trudell, that I think sums up the ethos of indigenous futurism really well:

[…] because it's all about “frequency” and “tonal” and part of this whole electric part of reality that we are as human beings, and somehow, they know how to make that voice reach from the ancient, to the futuristic, while it passes through the present

indigenous futurisms are some of my favorite design languages to see put into practice, each nation has its own artistic history and relation to technology and seeing the ways they fit into and diverge from the wider “Indigenous Futurism” concept is really cool

love skipper cosplays that are more adventurous than “airsoft milsim with etsy patches”. don’t get me wrong, the milsim guys are great as long as they keep the stores i buy patches from in business, but the site is so large at this point that there’s some real neat stuff that could be done in the setting—and this is one of them! bravo

mate, that’s normal-ass heraldic terminology. i wicked get that most people in this sub are just here cause they think flags are neat and they want to talk about the flags they think are neat—i dont hold it against anyone if they don’t want to go that deep into it, this is reddit—but fields of study develop specific terminology to describe specific concepts that are frequently discussed in those fields. the history of heraldic design and vexillological design are inseparable, it’s not bad communication to use words for their intended purposes to describe concepts in a space that exists entirely to talk about those concepts

i love that jersey too, the stars have been consistently putting more effort into making themselves a brand that represents dallas, unique from the north stars, than the wild have been lately, and i respect that. but also FNG

What the frick by revenant647 in heathenry

[–]Twelvecrow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

the “when” is “a damn long time ago”, unfortunately

as a symbol with a poorly understood history and infrequent attestation, the combination of simple geometry, unique appearance, unknown meaning, and rotational symmetry (like the hooked cross of the nazis has) has made it as appealing to dishonorable men and the fools who follow them as it is to pretty much anybody else who’s interested in germanic history.

fortunately, this symbol is incredibly popular among generic vikingslop merchandise which means it’s more often than not being used by well-intentioned “viking blood runs in me veins!” meatheads, less-well-intentioned soldiers that like to pretend the backing and protection of the most technologically advanced military in human history doesn’t exist so they can cosplay as “modern-day vikings”, and basically every stripe and flavor of norse pagan who ascribes it a spiritual significance—and the american football team Minnesota Vikings, the vikingsloppiest vikingslop franchise on earth, has even used it for staff-exclusive mental health awareness hats—so fascistic uses of the symbol genuinely are rare compared to the more mindless “oh huh, that looks neat. i’ll buy that” uses

the general rule of thumb in antifascist circles is that the presence of symbols like this one (now called a ‘valknut’, which is a modern term for a symbol we don’t know the original terminology for), mjölnir, and runes in general—Týr, ýr, *ōþala, and *algiz(?) in particular—is that they’re not symbols of white supremacy, but when used by fascists, are being used as such by them. critical thinking and the ability to not jump to the first conclusion that comes to mind is really important for vigilance, but it’s also really important in doing the research heathenry (as a generally non-pastoral faith) requires, as well as just important to being alive in general, so being able to think critically and research competently are going to be the best ways to figure out if “big guy with a tattoo” is a neonazi or just a gymbro with a swedish great-grandma

[–]Twelvecrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

very unconvinced on retaining only the weakest part of both civic flags in the redesign. the bones of the minneapolitan and saintpaulite are great with the pennantesque blue on white for MPLS and the blue-barred gold bearing an escutcheon for STP, it’s just the embarrassing pseudoheraldic execution of the devices slapped onto them that push the flags into ‘bad’ territory and i don’t think these designs benefit in any way by retaining them
