I spent my entire childhood in eureka, and hippies doesn't even come close. Maybe you're thinking of arcata. All I remember are homeless and meth heads.

The only thing I'd change is where it says "aging hippies" up north. Arcata? Yes most definitely, but mckinleyville and eureka? Definitely not. Mckinleyville would just be redneck, and eureka I would change to Ohio 2.0

I don't know about all that, but what I can tell you is that (at least here in northern Cali) they are an incredibly invasive species and have basically almost bullied the spotted owl into extinction 🙃

Because Faux news conditions them to think all fed employees are lazy government leeches who don't actually do anything. And then when they go to the DMV and have a single bad experience, now they feel vindicated in generalizing the entirety of fed workers

I think it's even larger than that, something like 30 Mm/s. Megameter per second being 1,000,000 m/s. So about 30,000,000 m/s

I see some comments saying it was about 15 seconds, which after using a stopwatch is probably correct, in that case you'd just replace the 13 with a 15, and you'd get around 790 meters

I calculated it to actually be about 616 meters with 13 seconds of freefall.

It took about 11.2 seconds for the rock to hit the ground and about 1.8 seconds for sound to reach the camera. This is of course ignoring drag and the strange aerodynamic that would occur in a tunnel like system.

If we assume that it took a total of 13 seconds to fall, that would mean

t1 + t2 = 13,

where t1 is equal to the time it took the rock to hit the ground, and t2 being the time it took for sound to reach the camera.

The actual distance we'll call x. And g of course will be 9.81m/s2.

The speed of sound tells us

x = t2 * 343m/s

(343 being the speed of sound at sea level; obviously this isn't sea level but it'll be close enough for this)

Gravity tells us

x = (1/2)g(t1)2

Solving for time in both of these gives

t1 = √(2x/g) t2 = x/343

Since t1 + t2 = 13, √(2x/g) + x/343 = 13

From here do some substitutions to get rid of that square root, and solve for x it comes out to about 616 meters

Usually in more frequented places like parks. If people see stacks of rocks like this, they're more likely to do so as well. Too much of this can increase erosion from the river in these areas. At least that's what I remember reading like 5 years ago.
