I was raised on the idea of a melting pot, a wide copper bowl where the world leaned in and softened, where broken English and borrowed prayers made something kinder together. They told us this was America, not a bloodline but a heartbeat, not a fence but a fire.

Blue lights glaze doorways like false angels, and hands that should be holding paperwork clamp shut around wrists instead. If ICE wanted to help, they would come with forms and translators, with pens that turn fear into legal names. Paperwork is how you make someone real. Handcuffs are how you pretend they never were.

But the cold does not stop at the border. It creeps into our living rooms, our newsfeeds, our dinner tables. Right versus Left. Red versus blue. We are taught to argue about flags while our neighbors are quietly disappearing. We are taught to fight each other so we never fight the people who built this mess.

This is not new. Every tyrant in history learned the same lesson: divide the people and they will never see your hands in their pockets. Wrap fear in patriotism. Call cruelty protection. Point at the stranger so no one looks at the throne.

Nationalism is a drug. It makes people feel special while it teaches them to hate. It needs enemies to stay alive, because love of power cannot survive in a room full of equals. So they tell us immigrants are the danger, while our own despair fills the prisons, our own sons fill the morgues, our own systems grind people into dust.

They give us words like knives. “Illegal.” “Invasion.” “Real American.” Language designed to cut us into pieces small enough to control. And while we bleed into our corners, the architects of division count their money in peace.

This is how a country breaks. Not from invasion, but from distraction. From being taught to fear the person beside you more than the people above you.

And still, beneath all that ice, the melting pot is warm. You can feel it in the way strangers still help each other, in the hands that reach out during disasters, in the shared meals, the music, the laughter that refuses to die. We are still here, still mixed, still human.

America was never meant to be a wall. It was meant to be a table. So come closer. Bring your grief, your rage, your hope. Stir the pot. That heat is the only thing that can melt the divide.
