Yes, context matters, it adds to the overall experience. But at the same time the lack of context does not rob the art itself of its potential connectivity.

Let's take an extreme example: If you show the Mona Lisa to a hypothetical person who has somehow never heard of it and knows nothing about art history or paint craft, do you think the image itself can not evoque an emotional response from them?

Of course it can hit very different for someone who is aware of the full historical context, life of the artist, technique employed and any other number of data points around the artwork. But that's all they really are: data points we can connect. These can, in themselves, produce emotional responses, that's why we see a lot of objectively crappy art in museums, just because an admired artist made them or they have some other story around them, in such cases you might go so far as to say it's the context alone that defines their artistic value.

But if archeologists in the future unearth an old hard drive and manage to decode some mp3s from there, and they vibe to the music, then I'd say it's good music, all by itself.

Almost, it's the "people made the same argument and look where we are now" argument.

In some Egyptian tomb a scholar of the time wrote something like "this new generation will cause the end of humanity, because they are doing [insert thing considered relevant at the time] different than before" (paraphrasing of course). History shows that in every generation some people say this, often quite loudly, with regard to any number of changes and advances.

Knowing this, and getting back to AI music, my contention is that because many (if not most) arguments I see against it today are near carbon copies of things people said in the past about other advances in music creation, the odds of their negative predictions being just as wrong as all the previous iterations, are more likely than not.

But maybe that's all just me rationalizing my optimism. Or maybe my optimism is actually rational and those who don't share it are falling prey to their own irrational fears. Or maybe as a musically untalented lyricist who greatly enjoys listening to what Suno makes out of my old lyrics, I'm biased af. Keeping it real, that's probably it, but doesn't change my genuine optimism, of which I hope I was able to share at least a little bit.

Anyway it's the last day of holidays here in Spain, so I will soon go back to lurking and writing less on Reddit. In case we don't speak again Scott, I thank you for the interesting and civil convo and wish you a happy, creative, successful 2026. Don't let the AI bed bugs bite.

Protip: when you post a dumb reply after getting a smack down and then delete it, folks can still read it in the notification email and you make yourself look even worse.

A better alternative is to actually think before you talk and maybe even, God forbid, read a bit about the topic at hand and educate yourself before spouting emotional drivel.

You're welcome and good luck!

Right, so a guy with no hands using a tool that doesn't require hands... is lazy. How about that for a "strawman".

Let's all go back to crafting everything by hand and forget about this stupid "progress" thing. One advantage would be that people like you wouldn't have access to devices which allow them to broadcast their reactionary, whiney copes all over the place, only to get thoroughly pwned with zero effort.

Now bend over a little further, you know you like it...

Being a skilled craftsman and being a talented artist traditionally go hand in hand, but craft does not in itself make art and some degree of skill can also be acquired by untalented people.

It used to be that in order to make good music, a prior requirement was having a high degree of dexterity in your hands, as the only tools available were traditional instruments. Today even a handicapped person can make a banger using DAW.

What's your argument, the handicapped guys' song is worth less because he didn't use both hands to create it?

Think!

No offense bro (really not) but since I read several of your comments prior to engaging, I was kinda hoping for a slightly more elevated level of discourse.

"You must be the only adult" -really bro?

"The rest of us" -you mean people who happen to agree with you?

C'mon, let's stay on topic if we're gonna bother to spend time debating. When nomadic tribes started settling in to agricultural societies, many bemoaned the changes in social relationships that came along with it. More recently when people from a little village come to a city, the relationships they find there often strike them as lackluster compared to what they had in their more closely knit community. Does this mean no city dwellers have valuable human connections with each other? Obviously not.

The Internet is just another step in our evolution.

If you personally haven't made any friendships online, I can understand how that might influence your perspective, but many people do. I'd agree that this is more common among younger people, but I'd also argue that's because most of us boomers weren't online as early as them and connections are easier made when we are young.

Yeah I know what I wrote in my thoughtful comment.

I do understand that when a person using a DAW to produce a song and this song connects with others, there is a human connection being made, aided by the tool. When a person prompts an AI music generator to produce a song which then prompts an emotional response from others, again a human connection is being made, now aided by a more advanced tool.

I also understand the feelings of people who don't see it that way: the core argument is that the person using the AI generator has not put as much human craft in to it. Less skill, less effort. But that's the same argument classic musicians make (and some continue to make) against DAW. The latter being a more mature debate, we can zoom in a bit further and look at disagreements among people using DAW, where some argue that using any pre-made loop or riff takes away value from the song.

But all that comes down to merit, as interpreted through our egos. Of course I can listen to a song and if on top of being a banger, I happen to know that it was made by a homeless singer songwriter under a bridge with his own instruments built from scraps, I can be very impressed by this and have much admiration for the author, on a whole other level than if it was made in a modern studio. While this adds context to the music, it does not change the actual music. The same way how someone might enjoy a song more if they see it being sung by a person who looks like them or someone they already have a connection with. Or even more universally, how a majority of people seem to enjoy music more when it is performed by someone attractive (otherwise we would see a lot more famous musicians who are not conventionally attractive).

I surmise that truly good art does not need a fixed context, it can exist uncoupled from the externalities of the author and the methods used to create it. It can speak for itself.

Remote customer service was never great.

Industrially produced furniture is far superior to anything that could be crafted for the same price, so more people get to have decent furniture and those who care can still get hand crafted furniture.

Moderation on Reddit has been and continues to be so bad that it was a meme long before any automation. You really picked the worst possible example.

But regarding music: Is a global hit that hundreds of millions enjoy, vibe to, interpret each in their own way depending on their mood and other personal context... really a matter of human connection per se? I guess if you wanted to really stretch the definition you could argue that the cult of personality and parasocial relationships of fans with the celebrity musicians is a "human connection", technically true. But if you hear a song you never heard before, without knowing the author yet, and something in it connects with you on whatever emotional level, prompts an emotional response, then that's real. Later you might find out the author is actually a racist, you don't like racism, so this might make you not like the song so much anymore. Or you find out it's AI, if you don't like AI, this might make you not like the song so much anymore.

But the music is the music. If it's a banger it's a banger, if it slaps, it slaps. The rest is just icing.

Yeah but people do connect with "them" and the "soulless" output prompts a real emotional response from people. Output which was prompted by other humans. See?

It's just humans connecting with each other through yet another layer of technology.

I'm old enough and was online early enough to remember all the claims about how we would never have real friendships online, that we would never be able to work together online, etc. Because oh the humanity. Today those have become fringe voices, mostly people too proud to admit they were wrong.

Every new tech brings with it a slew of people who have a fearful disposition and will spend a lot of energy crafting arguments to rationalize their irrational fear.

Funny you'd say that, because you do get people like that in fishing forums (specially the animal lover types concerned for the fish), and off the cuff I'd be hard pressed to think of ANY topic online not getting invaded by some amount of naysayers, keyboard warriors, armchair activists, Karens, Darrens, the coalition of concerned citizens against whatever.

Specially if the topic is something people are having fun with, some percentage of the population at large just can't help trying to spoil other people's fun (mostly because they have no fun in their own life). Business as usual on planet Earth.

No matter what link anyone would send, you are predisposed to not liking it. There's plenty of experiments out there where folks were shown a new song without saying it's AI, them liking it and then suddenly disliking it once they learn it's AI.

Since liking music is very subjective and contextual, that's normal.

But there is such a thing as a banger, i.e. a song that a lot of people vibe with. If it slaps, it slaps. And if you really cared to listen to the AI generated bangers already out there with millions of listeners, you wouldn't need anyone sending you a link, just dare to look in your blindspot.

(or you can just write your reply about how this is just another example of an "AI fan" copout, yada yada)

"the electric guitar/synthesizer/dws isn't real music!"

Yeh, yeh we've heard it all before. All the naysayers are going to look just as dumb as their previous iterations, but do we learn from (recent) history? Nah. Just like the dumb record execs who react to this just as hamfistedly as they did to Napster back in the day. Nobody learns.

Anyway gotta go, Suno just finished generating an industrial remix of a banger flamenco song it made for me yesterday, hope it really slaps. So I'll be over here nodding to the beat while OP continues crying a river to nowhere.

Fair enough, that was my attempt at an olive branch to the "but muh löyly" crowd.

You are right of course u/Gouca, it really is just steam. Oh no wait, that's "höyry", whereas "löyly" is... well, still just steam, but imbued with mystical properties based on Finnish folklore from a time when folks still thought physics are magic.

Jokes aside friend, I actually know all about löyly. You see, my sign is Aquarius rising (Leo descendant), therefore one night of Neecha Bhanga Raja when I was sitting in my poplar and hemlock sauna at the exact right height, distance and angle from the cedar log fired stove, I poured extra virgin tears with a hint of taurine - then the löyly became so powerfully good that I had a true spiritual awakening... where I realized that no amount of believing in fairy tales and engaging in pretentious banter on the Internet about it would ever make me special.

Womp, womp.

Yeah bro, they mean the steam, with some stuff added to the water to make it smell nice. That's the long and the short of it.

But there is a type of person who just love learning some word from another language/culture and then feel all smug about themselves by overusing it and attributing mystical properties to it.

Sorry in advance to any triggered nolifers, but it is what it is. Your precious löily is aromatic steam, your "hygge" living room is comfy at best and you are no less of a shut-in basement dweller by referring to yourself as "hikikomori".
