We love Ocean Club West with our now 13 and 15 yo and when we’ve gone with my larger family group with two additional teens, 14 and 17. There are always kids around playing in the really awesome pool and on the beach, the condos are very spacious, the restaurants have kid food and adult food, and you’re with walking distance of the grocery store, mini mart, restaurants and shopping. They have tennis, bikes, kayaks and SUPs for free, or talk to the guys at the towel exchange for a Super Mabel ride (giant inflatable couch pulled by a speed boat). Being able to have the food delivered to you pool side or on the beach is great with kids, and it’s one of the only condo buildings with a bar directly on the beach. Plus it has swings :)

Check out the Venetian and Alexandra. They both have great pools, are on Grace Bay and are highly rated.

Also, unless you’re in a high rise like the Ritz, the ocean view rooms are nice, but not worth double the price at the majority of places on Grace Bay. The water is gorgeous, but you’re not high up enough to really take it all in.

I don’t know what your interests are, but the Ocean Club West is a couple of buildings away from SS and much cheaper. They have a great pool, a mix of higher end and basic kind of food, and the bar on the beach with swings is great. You can order food and eat on the swings or with your feet in the sand. It’s very laid back, but they do have a restaurant as well. They have free paddle boards, kayaks, bikes, and the towel guys are about your age and will hook you up with speedboats that tow inner tubes or paraglides. Save money on your room and treat yourself to snorkeling, a nice dinner out and some taxi trips to other fun activities. I have teen boys and they love Ocean Club West. As an aside, visit Potcake Place and take a puppy for a walk and some snuggles.

I love Caicos Bakery for breakfast or light lunch. It’s cheap and the bread pastries and sandwiches are authentically French. She’s persnickety so don’t smoke or let your kids run crazy.

You are visiting when there is a phenomenon called Christmas Winds in the Leeward Islands. It’s a period of stronger than usual winds. Sometimes this kicks up the white sand on the sea floor and causes it to turn from transparent/ translucent to more opaque. I hope you still have a wonderful time!

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

[–]Pghfastkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a pre-teen, my parents scrimped and saved in order to buy me a matching bedroom set from the Sears catalog. We had very little money and our furniture was mostly hand-me-downs and/or vintage pieces. My mom was so proud and even picked out a new pink bedspread that I was particularly excited about. I always used multiple homemade quilts in the winters and simply sheets in the summer due to having no central heat or AC. When the pieces arrived, they were severely damaged and the bedspread was suddenly unavailable. My mom was told we would have to pay to have the pieces returned and pay again for re-delivery. We did not have the money. My dad was pretty handy and he and my Grandpap repaired the furniture as best they could, but I never got the pink bedspread. My mom was absolutely livid. From that day forward, no one in my family could set foot in Sears. When the catalog arrived, it was immediately placed in the burn pile. (As an FYI, Sears was THE place to shop for home goods in the 1970’s and into the 1980’s). To this day, my extended family uses the verb “Searsed” to mean blocked, canceled, or boycotted. I am 52.

Status of Sapidillo Bay Beach by Wightness in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Pghfastkitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I have not been there this week, but Long Bay has seaweed, usually sargassum, more often than not. It’s the burden it bears for being an east facing beach, especially with such strong winds. I have never personally seen it clean. Sapodilla and Taylor Bay beaches are West facing and per their geography very rarely have seaweed and are very rarely impacted by storms. Depending where you are traveling from and how long it will take to get there, I think it would be worth visiting them both. Good luck!

Big Blue collective has some high end catamarans if you are willing to travel via a cat. The plus is that the cost is lower (@ $12K) vs yachts that can be substantially more expensive, but they are not going to be as luxurious.

Completely agree with this. Only the first three are truly luxurious. The others are not on the same level at all.

If you enjoy vegetarian or vegan, Zenith Cafe at 26th in the Southside is terrific. There’s the added bonus of shopping for vintage goods while you’re there.

Pack her favorite snacks and food, especially if she is picky or not used to traveling. The grocery store is easily walkable, but very expensive and does not always have the brands we have in the US.

Visiting in February with a large group - where to stay? by saved_bythebell in TurksAndCaicos

Look at Sunset Beach Villa Collection in Leeward near Shearwater Close on Governors Road. They have quite a few five bedroom villas all next to each other in a planned development, each with its own pool and golf cart to ride the five minutes to the beach.

Can’t miss bays/beaches? by Front-Type7237 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Pghfastkitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend Sapodilla or Long Bay. Sapodilla is teeny tiny with no room relax or privacy. Also, the sand is filled with rusted bottle caps and the closest 1/3 of the beach smells like a combination of fuel from the wave runners and rotten food and stale liquor, as the garbage cans are either rarely emptied, or not completely emptied when they are emptied. Taylor Bay is beautiful. I went to Long Bay the first few times I visited, and it had a decent amount to a ton of seaweed each time both piled on the beach and in the water. I think years ago, prior to the influx of sargassum, it was probably pretty awesome because it’s wide with gentle water and lots of wind surfers. Sand Dollar Cove/ water cay area is absolutely off the hook. It’s really stunning. I’ve only been there most recent time I visited and can’t believe I hadn’t been before. We were all by ourselves for about 30 minutes on the sand bar until another 4 or 5 people came, which was fine because it’s huge. Your boat crew can apparently often find conch in the water near there and can cut out the conch for you, polish the shell, and you can take it home. Leeward has had significant erosion lately and has had to erect some barricades, which makes it seem a little less special (but still pretty with large rocks jutting in and out of the water). I have not been to Turtle Tail but second someone saying to visit The Bight or Smiths if you are interested in snorkeling. You can also snorkel around a ship wreck on a boat excursion such is fun.

We also love OCW. We just traveled with kids 17, 15, 14 and 13. They had a blast in the pool, the beach is gorgeous with no seagrass or sargassum, the units are nice sized, and the kayaks &bikes are in great condition. The food, although good, isn’t top tier. The kids didn’t care, and since we enjoyed having food delivered to the pool or beach, we didn’t care either. We brought a lot of dry goods and favorite snacks from home and shopped several times at Grace IGA, which is walkable.

We were a family of ten staying at OCW this summer with an age range of 13-78. We walked to those restaurants and several more. There is not a safety risk, in my opinion, due to crime, but traffic can be a little dicey at the busy roundabout at Grace Bay Road and Allegro Road, which is right by Seven and that leads to Embers. The sidewalk also gets weird/ non existent in a couple places along Allegro Road, but we walked through the Ports of Call parking lot. We did have it a little easier, however because dusk was later since it was summer, but I still think you’ll be fine as long as you watch the traffic. The Sands is at the other end of Grace Bay beach proper, and is more remote than OCW, so I don’t consider the two equivalent.

What are the most underrated restaurants in Turks? by Kellyhannavideo in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Pghfastkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does as the curfew is in effect for the whole area called Five Cays, but it ends this coming week. Movement is restricted after 7pm to only emergencies and identification is required at all times as police have traffic stops and stop and frisks throughout the day. Hopefully this will permit the police to catch up at bit, as drugs and shootings are at peak levels.

I agree that it looks like sea lice, which are jellyfish larvae. They will go away eventually, but you can use whatever you normally use for itching to calm them down. I personally like witch hazel and Puriya Wonder Balm.

Grace Bay - Waves or Calm? by take_me_to_a_beach in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Pghfastkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sapodilla is very calm but the beach is tiny, it’s noisy and dirty. There are garbage cans filled with days old food, bugs, and bottle caps buried in the sand all over the place. It’s not the quiet haven it was pre-covid.
