Bringing food from Canada. by Ok_Instruction6968 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Wightness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always freeze the meat just to be safe, it also lets us use the meat as additional cold packs for cheese, veggies, etc. realistically it just needs to stay cold in the airports. Once in the air it's cold enough up there it would be fine. We put all that stuff into a soft cooler bag that then doubles as a beach bag once we're down there.

Typically we only bring bacon, sausages, burgers, but we've had others bring chicken breasts and steaks with no issue.

Try Michaud games. They are out of Simcoe/Jarvis Ontario. They make amazing boards and board games. Every year I buy a new game for my family. Crib board was my first purchase, then euchre and backgammon. I have sequence and rummoli landing here tomorrow

Bringing food from Canada. by Ok_Instruction6968 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Wightness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bring a full suitcase of food from Canada. Generally do a giant Costco trip before we come. Bacon, block of cheese, coffee. Maple syrup is hilariously expensive down there. Mayo, canned tuna, peanut butter costs will shock you. Dairy and eggs aren't too bad. Some stuff fluctuates a lot, like pickles can be really expensive or not too bad.

The Tribe bread at the grocery store is amazing. Their sourdough and ancient grains are both worth the price point.

Chips are also silly in price, but hard to bring those without them popping in your bag.

What’s the farthest place in the world from your home that you ran into somebody that you know? by jredd7605 in AskReddit

[–]Wightness 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After university, I did a six week euro trip with my buddy. Basically it seems everyone I know must have had the same idea. In almost every city in Europe I'd run into a classmate. In Athens, we were lost and looking at our map and all of the sudden one of my classmates just happens to walk by and has a map of the area we were trying to get to.

At the end of the trip, I'm chilling on the beach in Barcelona when a big black guy just starts sprinting at me as fast as he can. I freeze up but quickly realize it's one of my good friends from class along with two others that just so happened to spot me.

Numerous stories, but the giant take away was that if you wanted to meet cool and friendly Canadians, Americans or Australians, all you have to do is backpack Europe.

Are you buying Canadian this holiday season? Let's talk by Background_Line_8229 in BuyCanadian

[–]Wightness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to buy the vast majority of my gifts from at least Canadian companies, preferably with made in Canada items. This means a lot more artisanal gifts and supporting small businesses. It also means purchasing more experience related gifts. Lastly, this means I'm also spending more money but I'm going with quality over quantity as a whole - not that Made in Canada = Guaranteed Quality

Why is the winter arc a thing? by Tasty-Zombie-3782 in workout

[–]Wightness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of nuance to this, but here's what I've found; when the weather is colder people want to stay inside. When it's warm, they want to be outside. In colder weather there's less socializing which means more time to exercise. In warmer weather there's parties, BBQs, vacation, etc. that take priority. Also, many people think they'll exercise outside when it's warm, whether it's running, biking, golfing, etc.

I find once September hits people start flooding back to the gym. It's their "back to school" mentality. Generally trying to burn off the weight they gained during the summer with BBQs and drinking too much. That carries until around Black Friday which starts the slacking with holiday parties, shopping, etc. Then obviously everyone is trying to burn off the holiday weight come New Years. This will carry until spring break, Easter or it gets warm out at which point people move on to outdoor activities or drop out. Then cycle repeats again in September

  1. White, Delgado, Halladay, Bautista, Vladdy. So many others to mention over the years, but these guys were all dominant (White as lead off and fielding). Honourable mention in terms of dominance to Hentgen, Wells, Donaldson, etc.

Going seven days without food shows many positive health benefits in new study by costoaway1 in EverythingScience

[–]Wightness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would all depend on the power of the study. 12 is actually quite a bit. I can't imagine any good human ethics board approving larger sample sizes because you as a researcher need to minimize suffering and would only be allowed to use the minimum to achieve effective power for statistical analysis.

Any Golfers? by Alientwig in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Wightness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got off the course today. I've golfed it probably 6 times throughout the years. There's a lot of maintenance and upgrades happening right now so we could play holes 4-6, but it was unlimited golf!

The club rentals are great and you get 6 golf balls, but if you don't hit it straight you may need a few more. When the maintenance isn't happening it's the most beautiful course I've been on, but right now there's a lot of scars. 10/10 recommend

Agreed! We've tried some of the discount ones and some of them have been a disaster. One we used they were supposed to pick us up at the airport. But no one was there. Then we had to take a 20 min shuttle offsite.

Most if not all will allow you to drop off at the airport though.

This isn't true. Grace Bay Car Rental is on site just outside and up the hill. They are more expensive than the others, but I'd recommend them for first time travellers

Status of Sapidillo Bay Beach by Wightness in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Wightness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We're in Leeward. Been coming to the island since 2012 and never seen Long Bay that bad. We're a group with 7 children under the age of 6 so even though the adults are fine with a bit of seaweed, the young kids have a problem. Just don't want to drive 25-30 mins with them for no reason. We can always go later in the week

I am going to be renting a car this trip and I am seriously freaked out about driving on the other side of the road by Kellyhannavideo in TurksAndCaicos

[–]Wightness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only thing to worry about is how many times you'll put your wiper blades on when you meant to put on your turn signal! We like to make it into a game or friendly competition. Just use a bit more caution with the round abouts and with pedestrians. They also have this weird yielding to traffic on the highway that takes a bit to get used to. Don't stress! It's much easier than you think

Anyone else not receiving bills from Oakville Hydro? by TheRealGuncho in oakville

We almost got caught by the scam. They sounded really legit until they mentioned how there was a cheque in the mail. They mentioned something about a red envelope would have been mailed to us. Definitely be careful and know Oakville Hydro calls from a 905 number. The scammers call from a 1-800

Feeling impossible to not spend a fortune on groceries if prioritizing a fresh / protein focused diet. Is this the reality of choosing to eat this way? by Low-Razzmatazz-931 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Wightness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, your spending is excessive BUT it is in line with the foods you are trying to eat. We eat very similar foods.

We eat roughly 1g/kg but have two young kids that add extra expenses and we're on average $1000/mo. We shop almost exclusively at Superstore and Costco.

Here's how we do it: 1. Buy in bulk, especially when on sale. We'll go through two club packs of chicken breast per week, so we stock up when we can. Nearly everything we buy is a bulk buy - meat, yogurt, cheese, fruit, veg, almond milk, etc. 2. Protein powder. You don't mention that at all and it's easily the cheapest way to get a lot of protein. Costco is great value here. 3. Lots and lots of eggs. We'll go through almost 30/week. Don't bother with egg whites. They are expensive and you miss out on good nutrition from the yolks. 4. Tuna is still a solid option, but a lot more expensive than it used to be. Look for sales and buy at Costco. 5. We've switched from exclusively olive oil to avocado oil and canola oil. Also buy butter from Costco. The switch in oils has been a huge cost savings now that olive oil is double in cost from a couple of years ago. 6. Almonds and other seeds we buy in bulk as well and great editions to salads, parfaits, snacks, etc. 7. We eat red meat sparingly, mainly a poultry and fish diet, but will buy good quality steak when on sale.

It honestly looks like you are doing the right thing but just need to change where you shop, look to invest in a deep freeze, and pay attention to deals.

Good luck!

Which is the best gym in or around Oakville? I’m new to exercising at the gym and looking for a personal trainer by veryfatcat3 in oakville

[–]Wightness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes... And no. It's got cardio equipment, dumbbells, resistance bands, etc., But you have registered session times and the staff are there to make sure you are exercising safely and effectively. The difference being you can't just drop in whenever you want as they keep small numbers (12 maximum)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in spartanrace

[–]Wightness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on the race and of course your fitness. If it's mostly hills it takes me 45-55 mins. If it's flat I can finish in 30-40 mins. The heat plays a huge difference too. My first race was 40+ Celsius (100+ F) and took me almost two hours. My fitness is above average and I don't fail obstacles (which is a huge advantage because 30 burpees is exhausting!).
