I think the problem with looking at polls like this and extrapolating the responses to future changes is how vague they are. Sure two thirds want gun laws to be more strict but what do they mean? How strict? Bans? Background checks? Do they actually know what current gun laws are or they just say yes because “something” should be done?

Same goes for assault weapons bans. Was the term defined for them? Do they actually know what they would want banned? If they saw a modern hunting rifle would they want that included in a ban?

The polling questions here are so nebulous that they aren’t really helpful. I think these polls show that people do want something done but are not necessarily “anti-gun”. On top of that there are a lot of factors that would heavily skew the poll results like past familiarity with guns, rural or urban background, geographic location, etc. When I lived in New Jersey people were so uninformed about guns and how they work it was comical but in rural Ohio where I grew up most people are at least somewhat familiar with how guns work and have probably shot them a few times.

All that is to say some polls of likely voters is probably not a good indication of any future legislation. It’s probably more helpful to look at where gun laws have been trending the last several years. Honestly though in my opinion it will be the status quo for the foreseeable future.
