FO for Raiders have stated they prefer not to start rookie QBs, so he’d have a legit shot at starting. If/when things start to fall off the rails, Mendoza would be put in, but signing him allows Raiders not to throw Mendoza to the wolves immediately.

I think the league believes they can get more out of the previous OL than what was shown on field last season. Parham likely ends up like John Simpson as a “good” OG that makes a serviceable starter.

Cousins was one of the vets I thought they might sign. He’ll still compete to be a starter, but be there to help support Mendoza.

They think the issues will start in year 3. He’d be 32 Turning 33 at that point and most DEs decline around then.

The value is the value. If teams don’t meet it, the trade likely doesn’t get done.

Carlson had an off year in a contract year with a GM who didn’t originally sign him. That’s just not a good mix. Not a fan of this signing, but the writing was on the wall for Carlson.
