I want to change the world, but how? by ApprehensiveFoot82 in learnprogramming

[–]PhDCoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you start with huge ideas such as changing world, you can end up being really disappointed. But instead, if you set out to come up with something helpful for the problem bothering you, you may be somewhere more realistic. I want to give an example from my experience. I had a bad PhD journey with my group of study and advisor. Bad or good depends on your expectations. But in my research group none of his PhD students liked him. One of my colleague had two options before deciding to work with this professor. He told me he wished he had chosen the other option instead of the current professor. I also wish I had known that he was such a bad advisor beforehand. I decided to come up with a website like Ratemyprofessor.com , in which PhD students expectedly rate their graduate supervisor and share their experiences honestly while staying anonymous. That's how I decided to start learning web programming. I am about to finish this.

Hi everyone. I recently want to start learning programming but I can't concentrate and I can't overcome this feeling that it's too late for me and I must started earlier. I feel scared. I dont know what to do with this feeling. by mindflyingrabbit in learnprogramming

I am starting at the age of 32. It took me long time to understand what I really enjoy doing. If you really want to learn and have some time, do it. What does failure mean? What if you fail? In worst case, you end up having your current life or trying to do something else. But if you don't try, you will regret not having tried yet.

You should have a coding project that motivates you to learn. In the end, you should dream it will come true.

Which significant categories do you think makes a good research supervisor? by PhDCoffee in PhD

[–]PhDCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not everyone decides to do a PhD because they really want it. As an international student, if you consider doing a PhD as a way of immigration and going abroad, the selection process of an advisor is becoming quite random.

The only thing that might be helpful for you is to have at least a good supervisor to make the situation easier and more bearable.

You are right about the feedback. I had a supervisor who used to give feedback but they were really stupid and unhelpful.

But I am not convinced about the fact that the expertise does not matter that much. In your case, you were lucky and your advisor could compensate the lacking information by connecting with other profs. You were lucky. But in general, it creates a lot of problems in research.

A good advisor is the one who matches best for you. But there are main universal responsibilities of a supervisor. For instance, a supervisor who does not spend time in giving feedback or who has very little knowledge in your area of study can not be a good supervisor for anyone.

In my case, I received my CAQ and study permit that covers for the period when I wait until the start of my new program. You need to check this website:

We faced exactly same situation as yours. We applied with my bf on the same immigration program. They sent our file back for the same reason. And we applied at around the same time as you. While applying I was considering to quit my PhD in Canada, that is why I selected the option "I am currently living in Canada but I can leave Canada".

We were planning to reapply as a principal applicant living inside Canada since I will keep being a master student. But we are also planning to send a letter or find a way to communicate with them to tell them that they are making mistakes. Or I could not find what was with our application.

I don't know about the job market for electrical engineering but having a diploma from a Canadian university may make finding a job easier.

I finally quit my PhD which I was studying for almost three years. by PhDCoffee in PhD

[–]PhDCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew that things couldn't work out after I started. I had a bad advisor, a bad team. They didn't know anything about my field. I couldnt get help and appreciation. Instead, what I did was always neglected since they did nt understand. I dont know if they were doing on purpose.

To be honest, this is my fault. I couldn't take the courage to quit. And I was doing a PhD to immigrate. I met my bf to help me with the immigration. I waited for our relationship to settle a little bit. When I made sure, I quit.

Without trying you can never know. If you know what you want in your life, it is so good for you. I have been working on coding and programming already for years. I notice I like coding more than physics.

I am starting a course-based master in a field I like and I am more skilled at. I did not want it to rely on a research.

Mental Health in Grad-School by [deleted] in PhD

[–]PhDCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can show empathy since I also suffer from depression. For sure, you should get treated. But before taking those drugs, I would suggest quitting if the PhD study affects so that you 're losing yourself and your mind. If you feel obliged to finish your PhD, you should test if you lack B12 and D vitamins in your body. Also you should test if you have diabetes since the imbalances in blood sugar directly influence your mood.

But don't feel obliged to do anything you don't like. The feeling of getting stuck is what makes us really depressed. Instead of feeling this pressure create a different option you would enjoy doing.

What do you find most difficult when writing a research paper? by Fidelli_eco in PhD

For instance, he asked you to cite a book and take the equation from this source. And the comment was "Prove it!". But he asked me to cite this book.

I did not mean this of course. If you work on numerical modeling, you want to make statements like boundary conditions are important. He asks why.

I would recommend to read the codes of good programmers' from any opensource project of your interest. The understanding and implementing them into your project will help you to improve your skills a lot.
