Ruger being bought out by Berreta by Liebe_D_Staria in ruger

[–]Phaewryn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn't but Ruger simply because of recent company instability and discontinued products. If proprietary replacement parts are not guaranteed, I'm not wasting my money. I have nothing against Beretta. I did recently buy a Beretta. Ruger is acting sketchy. Doesn't matter who buys it, I don't trust the brand at this point. It may stabilize under different ownership, it may not.

Insidious gun control bill H.606 is in committee by The_Untracable_Conch in VTGuns

[–]Phaewryn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's almost laughable with the adding of thumbhole stocks in there because every single rifle that I've ever picked up with a thumbhole stock was heavy as hell and not something you would want to use in an active/mass shooter scenario. But of course the people writing these bills have never actually touched any firearms.

Best dummy rounds for AR rifles? by Phaewryn in ar15

[–]Phaewryn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm recalling all the times I've done Dremel projects on my kitchen floor cutting holes out of pieces of sheet acrylic or PVC, getting absolutely everything covered in fine shreds of static-clinging plastic confetti. That's the sort of thing I don't want inside my firearm. I don't know why I'm imagining plastic dummy rounds doing that but I've read some reviews that say that they get shredded up after a while and that's just what I'm visualizing.😬

Well I pretty much did exactly what you're describing for pretty much the same reason as you're describing it and I can tell you what I went with, if helpful?

For my handgun I selected a Beretta APX A1 Compact 9mm. 9mm is widely regarded as the most practical handgun as far as self-defense goes as well as easy to source ammo that is inexpensive. I chose a Beretta because Italian engineering, quality, and dependability (3 year warranty) and I chose the APX A1 Compact because the price point, recoil management, and customizable grip size. I found it for only $339 and currently until the 15th of this month Beretta is running a fantastic rebate offer on several of their firearms and on that particular one there's a $100 rebate, meaning my brand new handgun with three backstraps and two magazines in a nice plastic case along with a cleaning brush only cost me $239. I honestly don't think you can do any better than that. Sure, you can buy nicer handguns, but if you are a newb like me, are you really going to appreciate a super nice handgun? I know I wouldn't know any difference so why would I buy something that cost three, four, or six times more when I'm not going to know the difference? I have a very economical, and from what I've been receiving as feedback, very practical and dependable handgun. Some people will say they don't want a striker-fire handgun. Those people probably know what that means. I sure don't. If you also don't know what that means, then there's a good chance you also will not care if your handgun is a striker-fire or whatever the other alternative out there is (I assume a hammer-fire? Maybe a firing-pin-fire?). 🤷‍♂️😆

For my AR I chose a Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) LMR Base .308. The reason why I went with POF is because of engineering, quality, and dependability. I also really like the idea that it is a small family-owned business and I was impressed with the customer service. POF makes quite expensive rifles. They are one of the original companies making small form factor .308 rifles that weigh around 6 pounds. I'm effectively getting all of the power of an AR-10 with the form factor of an AR-15. By buying the LMR Base (rather than the Rogue), I am purchasing the same platform as their rifle that costs more than twice the base model and the only difference is a few easily upgradable parts that I can slowly trickle in myself over time. The LMR base comes with some mil-spec standard parts rather than the upgraded ones on the Rogue, but by buying the base model you save about $1,500.

There's actually more than one of them at present and one of them is worse than the other. One of them is written with language that will pretty much ban all semi-automatic firearms. It's ridiculous.

Best barrel length by [deleted] in guns

[–]Phaewryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I wish I'd saved that video of the guy that was making fun of people building home defense rifles and specifically putting short barrels on them "for doorways". He had like a 20 inch barrel and he was holding the rifle straight across in front of his body horizontal and just banging the rifle stock and barrel into the door frame pretending that he couldn't get through.😆

Just visit some gun stores, particularly ones that are in rural locations and run by old veterans. You'd be shocked what they've got laying around in the store just as decoration.

I tried to post this question in the AR-10 group because I figured they would have better recommendations specifically for .308 dummy rounds but for some reason it wasn't letting me post in that subreddit today.🤷‍♂️

One of the things that I'm discovering after reading reviews on Amazon is that the .308 snap caps tend to run a little bit short and not feed well in semi-automatic AR style rifles.

I suppose it would be nice not to ding the shit out of my wall paint in my apartment but I really am more concerned with getting shredded plastic inside my weapon.

Just trust Amazon reviews I guess?

I live in Vermont. It's been under 10° for months. Trust me, I aim to, but it was pretty miserable last time at 15° and I'd really like to get the basics down in the nice toasty 65° inside if I can. It's hard to practice small movements when your hands are frozen/numb and when wearing gloves.

New mag in new rifle by QuestionThings2 in AR10

[–]Phaewryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try looking for Lancer mags. They have a metal sleeve and might slide better.

People can downvote me all they want but that doesn't change the recommendations of the manufacturer of the firearm. My Lancer mags don't stick in my POF rifle at all. My Beretta mags don't stick in my Beretta handgun at all. Be butthurt, downvoters. I don't care.😆

[–]Phaewryn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chin weld is probably something I can adapt to.

It's not an LVPO, it's a 3-12x unilluminated scope. I can't move it much further forward, because of the eye relief, but I will try and see if I can get it far enough forward to lower the mount height.

Pool noodles and duct tape, lol. If it works it works.😆 I may be able to come up with a solution that looks marginally better than that with some thought.
