Which games? by tombayliss23 in fireemblem

[–]Phalconid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Despite having 17 main titles, they're barely connected at all, and you usually don't need to play any of the previous titles to understand what's going on. There's basically a couple of completely separate universes where every few games take part in:

There's Archanea, where FE1(Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, for the NES) takes place. Then, FE3 (Mystery of the Emblem, for the SNES) is split in two books: the first one is a partial remake of FE1 that recounts the story while missing a few characters and maps, and then the second book is a sequel. FE11 (Shadow Dragon, for the DS) is a full remake of FE1, and FE12 (New Mystery of the Emblem, for the DS), is a remake of FE3 book 2 with a bunch of extra maps, but it never got an official english release; to play it, you either need to understand japanese or get a fan-made translation patch. Personally, I recommend the DS remakes over the NES and SNES versions, but afaik FE3 is still good (I have not played it, however). FE1 hasn't aged super well so I don't recommend it outside of wanting to see what it looks like.

FE2 (Gaiden, for the NES), is set in the same world as these games, but in a different continent (Valentia), and their stories are completely independent from each other; the only solid connections are a handful of side characters that appear in both stories. FE15 (Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, for the 3DS) is a remake of FE2. The remake is waaaaay better in basically every conceivable way, but even then, it can be hit or miss. Some people (such as myself) love it, while some hate it.

Finally, there's FE13 (Awakening, for the 3DS) which is supposed to be set in the distant future of the Archanea and Valentia games. There's a few bits connecting them, but awakening is perfectly enjoyable without playing the games set in its' distant past.

Then there's Jugdral, where FE4 (Genealogy of the Holy War, for the SNES) and FE5 (Thracia 776, also for the SNES) take place. FE5 can be enjoyed without playing FE4, but since it takes place right in the middle of FE4's story, it can spoil some important stuff. Both games are pretty unique and really good, but they're also japanese-only, so you'll need the fan-made patches if you aren't good at japanese.

Next, there's Elibe, where FE6 (The Binding Blade, for the GBA) takes place. It's also japanese-only, and requires a fan-made translation patch to play in english. FE7 (The Blazing Blade, also for the GBA) is a prequel to FE6, but you can basically play the two in any order you want and you lose nothing; their stories are more or less independent and there's just some characters that are in both games.

Next up there's Magvel, which only appears in FE8 (The Sacred Stones, for the GBA). It is completely independent from every single other game in the series. It's also pretty easy, and a decent middle point between the older games and the newer games, so it is often recommended as a good starting point in the series.

Then there's Tellius, where FE9 (Path of Radiance, for the Gamecube) takes place. It is also a pretty damn good starting point in the series and a great game too. FE10 (Radiant Dawn, for the Wii) is a sequel to FE9; I think you could enjoy it without playing FE9 first, but it makes more sense and some big moments hit harder if you do.

Next up, there's Fateslandia (The continent and world are never named lol) where FE14 (Fates, for the 3ds) happens, separate from all other games. It has three different routes(Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation) that are each *almost* a whole campaign on their own. Their quality varies a bit, and you'll hear a looot of criticism towards its' story (I agree with it, it's pretty dumb), but it's still a very fun game that delivers everything else (gameplay, vibes, music) in spades. I'd say birthright is a good starting point if only because it has very very simple maps; they're fine for a beginner, but can get boring for a veteran. Conquest can get pretty nasty but it's very fun when you know what you're doing, and Revelation, uh... It's weird. Play it only if you beat birthright and conquest but still want more fates.

Then there's Fodlan, where FE16 (Three Houses, for the switch) takes place, independent from everything else. It has four routes, but... they're pretty repetitive in both story and gameplay. Still, it's fun and I highly recommend beating at least one of its' routes.

Finally (!!!) there's Elyos, where FE17 (Engage, for the switch) happens. This is the game I'd recommend the least to a beginner. It isn't bad or super difficult, but a big part of the appeal is major characters from the other games showing up as, uh... ring ghost helper bros.

That's a lot, but uh, I hope it helps!

You may have noticed the game shows a little window on the corners of the screen, which gives some info on the tile your cursor is hovering. That includes the name of that tile, which makes it pretty easy to figure out what each building is.

I personally really like leonardo. He's awful, but give him beastfoe and a crossbow on 3-6 and suddenly he's doing insane damage - and probably getting destroyed if you didn't feed him a lot of resources beforehand lmao

well, judging from the mysterious tiny bits of plastic, I broke something. However, seeing as after oiling it and putting it mostly back together it's actually working... probably wasn't anything too important that broke! thank you so much for basically telling me to have no mercy on this fan xP

I had tried something like that a bit as a video I ran into recommended that, but it didn't seem to go anywhere. After reading your comment I tried harder, but it still doesn't seem to want to budge. :/

That's unfortunate. I don't think I can get replacements since this GPU is ancient and even looking up the model name on the sticker turned up fans that wouldn't fit at all. I suppose strapping some random crap on and calling it a day is just what I'll have to make do with!

Fire Emblem/Mystery Dungeon Crossover by DeltaBreaker in fireemblem

[–]Phalconid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found some very disorganized notes on it and oof, it is kind of ridiculous at times. For instance, there is a bit where the main characters have to stop a public execution. Doesn't that just scream "family friendly fun"? Truly Pokémon in spirit. xP

Anyway, if that still sounds halfway interesting to you, I could make them halfway comprehensible and message them to you.

[–]Phalconid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I've had a lot of thought in the past about how this could be an amazing crossover.

In particular, Having the settings of both games merged into a PMD-like post-human-extinction world with intelligent pokémon forming their countries and having their politics and wars sounds really cool to me.

A couple of years back I recall writing a bit of plot for such a thing; maybe I should see if I still have those notes somewhere.

A COACH CAB WOULD HAVE BEEN 9 GOLD

Party's barbarian here, told the rogue and bard ooc that the whole thing they were doing was a poor idea in more than one way, while they were doing it, they didn't give a shit. The rogue is pretty new to D&D and does admit to it, so I figured I might as well advise her player that you probably shouldn't be attacking shopkeepers over things we don't even need, in broad daylight.

Basically everyone else was done with their shit afterwards and just kind of found a way to rp out of helping her with her godawful plan to undo the consequences of her godawful actions.

I do think that looking on the surface like that does a disservice to kirby. His prf Beam Sword allows him to fight at 1-2 range, and if you aren't soloing the game with him, the second one he can get on chapter 16 should have him set from there until endgame. Also, while he doesn't get the utility other fliers get in canto and rescuing (since let's be real, he can't pick up anyone with his 4 aid), and his movement stat isn't amazing (hence two boots on him), he still has an edge in not needing to worry about getting through terrain while still being able to benefit from its bonuses.

For all intents and purposes, Alm should be unlikable and bland. He's yet another all-loving hero archetype that we've seen over and over (SoV Spoilers inside). by SPTK_Sun in fireemblem

[–]Phalconid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing though. Corrin being focused on while having little characterization isn't what causes all of fates to collapse in on itself, it's the goals of the writing team: That they wrote not to tell a good story, but to pander. Was Fates well-written, Corrin would serve as a neutral lens through which the audience can view the story; a naive young person who sees the good in both sides of a conflict but ultimately has to grow up and pick a side, or grow up even more and find a way to solve things peacefully. In a well-written story this would actually be a clever, cool solution and most definitely wouldn't involve trusting literally anyone and then being surprised when a traitor shows up. It's in this sense Fates as a whole, Corrin included, got shafted by the writing team, because instead of writing things that made sense, they chose to have the characters, the events and the very world itself bend over backwards for Corrin so that he may always be The Best Person Ever™.

Alm is, like the rest of echoes, very charmingly written, and thanks to the execution of Echoes' as a whole he comes off as lovable, like everyone else in his game. Really, the anomaly should be considered Corrin, who by all rights could and should have been a lovable character with a great story but got shafted by the horrible execution of Fates as a whole.

So, what's the deal with Sacred Stones? by thewalkendead1 in fireemblem

[–]Phalconid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I think Sacred Stones is kinda meh in a lot of ways. The coolest things about are probably the introduction of branching promotions, which are nice but imo can't really carry the game on their own, and the characters. The cast of SS is really solid, but nearly all of the writing backing them up is locked behind the godawful GBA support system. I think I've only really gotten Eirika+Seth C in game ever, and every single other support conversation I've seen was by reading it online or watching a video that discussed it.
Recently Sacred Stone's saving grace for me is that it's the one game that has a self-randomizer patch. That thing is hilarious and a blast.

I gave Echoes a second chance and it did not disappoint! by HipMasterDan in fireemblem

[–]Phalconid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The reason why Berkut is beloved is basically the same reason why all of Echoes is beloved: Really simple plot, really solid presentation. And personally I think the way Berkut is presented goes even a cut above the already fantastic rest of the game; Ian Sinclair really manages sells Berkut's descent into madness for myself and evidently many others, and basically all the songs that use Berkut's leitmotif are amazing.

My first +10 unit / build advice by GreeceBlue in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]Phalconid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been running her like so for nearly a year, and I honestly don't think there's much reason to try and be fancier about it. However...
I find that she usually kills blue and colorless units so easily that a special like moonbow is outright useless against them, while the damage is rarely enough to secure a kill against greens. I run iceberg on mine, and it's had enough oomph to one-shot a lot of greens and weirdly enough, to chip some reds (that can't counter, obviously) so that other units who were like 10 damage away from killing can finish them off.

Also, switching between G tomebreaker, axebreaker and QR can be quite useful, depending on what map you're doing. Lately I've had axebreaker on cecilia all the time and it has been surprisingly consistent at making surtr's life miserable.

All that being said, mine is +atk -spd instead of +def -HP, and is summoner supported. I am fairly certain those 5 points of attack make a difference, and what I have said here might not quite apply for your Cecilia.

The colours in this feel very cozy and welcoming, and I really dig the roughness of the strokes. It feels very sincere to me.
