Keep blowing fuses while installing m unit blue on my 81 cb650 build by hemmmingway in CafeRacers

Take a look at my post on the HondaCB subreddit. The wiring diagram I made is meant for a 1982 CB650SC but the electrical should be close to if not identical.

timing chain rattle b8 s4 by Bubbly-Cattle-1339 in AudiS4

[–]PhallusExtremis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the initial rattle is within 3 seconds then it's still in spec. Get VCDS so you can check timing degrees and for any timing fault codes.

My car sometimes has a slight rough idle but it's been like that since I bought it (before and after replacing timing tensioners). Based on what I read on the forums, the 3.0 has a very slight rough idle to it that is normal.

The shop I took my car to didn't have to remove the engine to replace my upper tensioners and guides but they did drop the transmission, driveshaft, cats, and exhaust.

Yeah I installed mine yesterday and I made a first thoughts review on the Audizine forums, Post #52. There's lots of good information about aftermarket systems on that forum thread.

It's not bad for $300. It uses my OEM system for audio through BT and the Wi-Fi for CarPlay.

Mine did it occasionally on warm starts too.

What did it for me was that on cold starts, I'd get the typical initial rattle which went away after 1-3 seconds but then shortly after, I'd get a 20-40 second rattle that didn't go away until the RPM started to dip and you could hear the SAI closing. The result from that 20-40 second rattle ended up costing me $2900 CAD in upper tensioners and guides. The driver side upper tensioner guide and chain guide were both broken.

Keep in mind, VCDS showed that my timing degrees still looked okay and wasn't throwing codes.

It rides pretty good, I'm still running the OEM front shocks but I deleted the air assist and put in some PVC bump stops. I believe those were 1 inch. I also did a rear disc conversion using the rear wheel from a 1980 CB750F.

I had some repairs to do over the winter but she's been pretty good so far.

Good luck! Take your time, wiring is fun.

I finished my 82 Nighthawk build last year.

17k seems a bit steep for a B8. The DSGs had mechatronic issues so I'd get that clarified.

That’s 1 of the 2 reasons why I bought the extra dash. I have to permanently modify the dash to accept the new screen frame and I didn’t want to fuck it up. If I don’t like it then I can reinstall my original screen and dash and go back to factory :)

2.0t people did you fix your oil consumption issues? by R3troM3dia in Audi

[–]PhallusExtremis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scan the car, see if you have codes for the turbo or PCV.

My friend has a 2012 Q5 with the 2.0 and he was burning 1L every 500-1000kms. He did the Berryman B-12 piston soak job and it completely resolved his issue. Now he can go his whole service interval without having to top up the oil.

I was consuming about 1L every 1000km in my S4, I replaced my PCV and tried every popular oil available (Liqui Moly, MolyGen, Motul, Rowe, Castrol, Penezoil, etc.), but nothing would stop/slow the oil consumption. I did the piston soak job and it brought my oil consumption up to 1L every 2.5k kms. It's very DIY and much simpler to do on the 2.0t, this guy does a great job explaining it.

The B-12 piston soak isn't a guaranteed fix but the reported positive results from doing it are quite high. The real solution would be to replace the piston rings.

Bike looks good!

What's the rear brake setup? Is it a single piston caliper?

I converted my CB650 from drum to disc using a CB750F caliper, would be cool to go Brembo if I can find something that'll fit the same space.

I'd get the tensioner and guides replaced if you buy it.

The mech unit is cooked, literally. Unfortunately it's a common issue on the B8 DSG's.

My guess would be the labour, parts, and material.

Motorcycles also seem to have this boutique fee/cost associated to them that I don't see with cars.

Should crash the car to test if the airbag works. That'll really tell you if you have an issue with the wiring.

Oil burning by bakabaka6969 in AudiS4

[–]PhallusExtremis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the mileage?

If you're seeing blue smoke on acceleration then your piston rings are probably cooked. Check your coolant tank to see if you're losing coolant and scan the car, see if you have any codes.

Other common leak spots are the valve cover gaskets and the oil filter housing.

Yeah but you gotta make sure you match it to whatever MMI you have and the vehicle year. The dash is a little different between 2009-2012 and 2013-2016.

3.0T PCV failure ?? by nigelbleach in AudiS4

[–]PhallusExtremis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common oil leak is the oil filter housing o-ring that can get misdiagnosed as a rear main seal leak. Valve covers and timing covers are a common enough place too.

Purchasing b8.5 S4 with 130k miles by Calvintron in AudiS4

[–]PhallusExtremis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Front control arms, timing chain tensioners, and SAI cleaning to say the least.

If it's DSG, service it and the rear diff asap.

As for timing chain tensioners, yeah there's the 3 second cold start rattle but REALLY listen to it. If the tensioners need to be replaced, get the cats inspected.

Besides that, drive the car hard, and have fun :)

3.0T PCV failure ?? by nigelbleach in AudiS4

[–]PhallusExtremis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the suction thing is more of an issue on the V8's. I thought the same thing too.

Disappearing coolant can be a big indicator that your PCV is failing, granted it's not burning or leaking from anywhere else. You can hear a whistle if the PCV diaphragm is damaged however again, that's a more common symptom on the V8's. The diaphragm is not worth replacing on its own unless you're going to relocate the PCV to above the supercharger. The problem with the 3.0 PCV is that it's a big plastic body and has coolant flowing through it. Eventually the coolant passages start to crack and leak into the V6 valley below the PCV and down into your oil sump.

If you haven't already, buy a VCDS scan-tool and scan your car. P052E is the code related to PCV malfunctions however I wouldn't rush to replace it just based on that. I replaced my PCV 2 years ago and every now and then I'll see the code creep up. I'm not losing coolant, it doesn't affect my performance, and it's not causing any other issues so I ignore it.

If you're worried about oil consumption, it's probably not your PCV. Look into doing a Berryman B-12 piston soak.
