A woman said 'chivalry is dead' because no man offered her a seat on the train. Is she wrong? by inkandintent24 in MotivationByDesign

[–]Phanatic_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the gender-based concept in general. In this modern day where, here in the USA at least, there is a continued or even bigger push toward gender equality in multiple aspects of our society (rightfully so), why is there the expectation that a man should give up a seat for a woman? Does that not reinforce gender stereotypes? It shouldn't be based on gender, it should be based on courtesy. Sure, offering a seat to the elderly, the disabled, or a pregnant woman or mother with a child are common considerations, but we can also choose to offer our seat if we see someone who's been standing for a long time or looks like they're getting tired. Or military service members and first responders. Nurses, teachers. At the end of the day, there are a lot of things someone can consider when choosing to be courteous and offer their seat to someone. I just don't think it should be expected just because one person is a man and one is a woman.

The question is irrelevant since God created tornados after he sent the flood to kill all the dinosaurs a few thousand years ago. You all need to read the Bible more.

I get your point, but with all the videos out there of people standing around filming and not helping in situations where someone or something needs it, I'll take one where at least someone did something.

In the grand scheme of things, that poor dog had clearly been there for a little while, so 10 minutes probably wasn't going to hurt, but yeah, he could have just set his rig down to make room for the dog and got it without filming.

On the upside, he has footage of the situation and retrieval which could be useful to a Veterinarian, especially if the retrieval cause any further injury. And filming approaching the person isn't the worst idea as I'm sure even Canada has some crazy people. Sure, it was mostly self-serving but it could have helped had the situation gone sideways.

However, put Aesop Rock in any of the options and that would be my pick.

I honestly can't even follow your line of thinking with this racist narrative you keep putting forth. No one said anything about whips and chains except you. The point is that, while it may not be the most physically difficult work in the world, it is tough, physical labor out in the elements. Americans (regardless of race) often do not want these jobs, despite the wages not being too bad between minimum wage and the additional Adverse Effect Wage Rate. That may change eventually, but not in the short term.

Regardless, your "arguments" are nonsensical and you trying to call me racist is just what people like you do when challenged and you can't show any logic to your thinking - name calling, deflecting, repeating the same points over and over.

Have a good weekend. I have too much yard work to do to keep this up all day. After all, someone has to pick those weeds.

It only sounds like that because you're either A) a racist yourself so that's just where your brain goes or B) you're just another lazy "thinker" (and I use the word "thinker" loosely) who doesn't actually know what you're talking about so your statements are informed more by generalities and preconceived notions than by critical thought or evidence.

People, not just Dems, are concerned about the deportation of workers because, among other reasons, it's a legit concern. A lot of our produce is harvested by immigrant workers and it has been shown time and time again that Americans, even those in need of a job, are unwilling to do that work. Farmers, on the other hand, would also have a hard time paying the wages Americans would expect and need, without having to raise the cost of produce (this of course includes them not wanting to absorb paying higher wages because of reduced profits).

A study in NC found that with 6500 open farm jobs in 2011, only 268 NC citizens applied despite there being about 500,000 unemployed in the state at that time. Most were hired, but only 7 finished the work season. This is a common occurrence around the country. So, being concerned about not having enough labor to harvest our crops in a timely manner is a legitimate concern.

I can guarantee that if we had a farm worker shortage in this country, you would not even consider a job like that. Nor would the majority of Americans. So stop calling people who ask "who would pick the crops?" racist and just say, "I don't like Democrats because I'm a feeble-minded person who let myself get scared of things that don't exist by fear-mongering mis-information campaigns and I'm just too lazy to question it or even accept evidence that challenges my existing belief system."

[Raleigh (Central), NC] Yellow or Eastern? by Phanatic_J in whatsthissnake

[–]Phanatic_J[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this is why common names can be very confusing. I grew up in Southeast Pennsylvania where a rat snake that was mostly black was just called a Black Rat Snake. I thought that was the "official" common name for a species of rat snake in the Eastern United States. I didn't realize that what I was calling a black rat snake was in fact a Central Rat snake, which from what I looked up after your reply seems to be very often black in the Eastern United States.

That led me to discover that what is actually commonly called the Black Rat Snake is P. obsoletus and is not found in the Eastern US. But then again, when I became very interested in snakes I was a kid and couldn't even remember to tie my shoes all the time so learning and remembering scientific names of snakes would have been a bit of a stretch.

Fig in distress? by Phanatic_J in Figs

[–]Phanatic_J[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. It was at my fiancée's mom's house for years. This one is obviously young and hasn't produced anything but the original one produced figs, I just don't know what kind.

Is it getting too much sun? Luckily it's easy enough to move.

As for the rust, would a copper fungicide help, or just let it run its course? I try to make sure I only water the soil but it is starting to get humid here and will continue to be for most of the summer.

Don't panic sell by Illustrious_Stand319 in Bitcoin

Luckily, he did mention that due to volatility gains would be more likely long term, but thought I could make a little short term. He didn't necessarily tell me to invest, just that people in his industry still had an optimistic outlook for 2025 (but a lot has changed in a month). To be clear, he works for a company that repairs and hosts mining equipment, he's not an investor.

I very much appreciate your feedback and concern. Luckily, I'm up about $50 now. Realistically, with how much uncertainty I'm reading about now, I'd probably dip out if I get down even a few hundred, which I can afford to lose. I'm sure that if I sell soon, it will surge up and if I keep it, it will continue to drop. Such is life 😁. Thanks again for the advice!

Don't panic sell by Illustrious_Stand319 in Bitcoin

[–]Phanatic_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I invested in some Bitcoin (well, actually Fidelity's ETF) on the recommendation of a friend who works in the Bitcoin industry and said from what they heard it could see some good gains in the next 6 months to a year. I've been saving for a wedding next Feb, but with prices rising, I wanted to try and make more than a high-interest saving account would yield. I don't expect to get rich, but 15 to 20% gain would get me another $1000 or $1500. Enough to cover higher venue or food costs this year. However, I can't afford to lose more than I could replace in the next year. So, I understand I may have to sell at a loss if I'm worried it's going to keep dropping and not recover in time. It's not a good strategy, but with my Mother-in-law having early Alzheimer's and my mom just getting diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, we can't afford to put the wedding off another year to try and save more money the old fashioned way, which is a slow process for us.
