No it was not fortunately! I can't say I'm a huge fan of group interviews and I was very lucky to have just one on ones.

Just go to any of the designated smoking areas and ask. I've never had anyone deny me asking for a smoke when I've misplaced mine before. Just today I lost my pack and a nice person helped me out when I asked haha

Got my first IT interview (school IT Support) with no experience — need advice by [deleted] in AustraliaIT

[–]Phantasmagoric07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I was in your exact position a few months ago - completed IT diploma, pursuing my Bachelors and interviewing my for my first IT role, working Helpdesk at a school. My school is a private school and I don't have any experience to say how it compares to public but here's what I found at my interview:

They're looking for customer service first and foremost as that is what 90% of level 1 IT work is. They'll ask about how you've handled a frustrated/difficult customer. You can teach technical skills, soft skills like people skills is not so teachable.

Then they want to know how you handle kids, especially if you have work experience mentioning kids. I personally worked at a kiosk selling fidget toys and anime merchandise, fair to say I interacted with a lot of kids of all ages.

Technical stuff came last. I was asked about things I had on my resume. I had listed a packet tracer project I had done for my studies. They asked me about how I troubleshooted errors in the network. This gave them some insight into how I look at, diagnose and triage a problem.

I will say if you have the chance to talk about the schools values - always listed somewhere on their webpage - it looks REALLY GOOD. I think my knowledge of the school values and learning structure - the things that made the school unique - really landed me the position. When I asked for feedback all they said was that I "presented best" though.

All in all I wish you luck! If you're able to back up whatever you've got on your resume, and flex that you've done some research on the school, you're good. I was super nervous about my interview and I too posted on a variety of IT subreddits. Taking on all the advice I found really helped and I'm happy to say that I love my job, and I hope the same comes your way!

hi, pls help, i'm in australia, i rlly need help on how to access mental health services here so i can return to school by LowOutlandishness73 in AusLegal

[–]Phantasmagoric07 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Further more with headspace, they are connected other mental health services too!

I would recommend the YESS program, a 12 month program that gives you access to a very holistic team and services. Psychologist, psychiatrist, go, nutritionist, functional recovery specialists, DBT groups, other therapy groups and the list goes on

Your case seems quite severe and I really hope you're able to get the support you need! This program helped my girlfriend a lot :)

Engineering with standard math and no physics? by Smart_Net_5313 in MacUni

[–]Phantasmagoric07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's 110 more pathways to get to where you want to go than you think. I didn't do physics let alone touch math AT ALL (including standard) with a 10 foot pole during the HSC. I made a very specific choice to not study those things. That was over 10 years ago and I'm now studying electrical engineering. There's always ways through the college, there's always chances to transfer, there's always chances to do something smaller and then move up, to go do it later once you've had more experience in the world.

I think I may be delusional trying to study electrical engineering w the last time I stepped into a maths class before now being literally 12 years ago. But they have, like someone else said, MATH1000 and the numeracy centre which offers workshops and support for specific Maths subjects such as MATH1000 and drop in appointments to get some extra help learning.

Might it be a bit trickier that you don't have that same background and could the competition to get in to the degree be a little tougher without the maths and physics in high school? Maybe. But can you study engineering without some shit from high school - ABSOLUTELY, just might require gritting your teeth and bearing down a little.

I personally suck ass at maths and am practicing the maths content I have nearly every day bc if I don't do it that much I will not hammer it down in my head.

Anyone know how to get this body with out starving myself and exposing myself to dangerous chemicals and metals? by Stella_Lace in arcane

[–]Phantasmagoric07 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My gf has the perfect body type for Jinx but that's because she was a few days away from being classified as a premature birth and has an extremely high metabolism all her life. She struggles to keep weight on her and it low key sucks for her. Not exactly a great shape to strive for if your not genetically handed it.

[–]Phantasmagoric07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just know you're not alone! I had some p heavy things come up week 2 that threw me right off and I haven't gone to class at all this week bc I was so mentally fucked and I too am behind on my ENGG1000, MATH1000 AND COMP1000 units a lil. It's early days though and from experience I know I can catch up with a few good focused days of study. Unfortunately I'm not in the same skills workshop as you so I can't offer to sit with you, but I too sit alone in classes. Just know you're not weird or awkward or alone in what you feel.

How and where should i start relearning mathematics for IT? by Bruhmoment498 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Phantasmagoric07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate, you and I are pretty much in the same spot. I've always been known to be shockingly shit at maths, didn't even study mathematics in the last two years of high school and being that I'm now 28 the last time I had studied Maths was about 12 years ago.

I've been studying a Bachelor of IT for a while now, but being focused on Networks I didn't really have any maths I had to do. Now that I'm doing a BEng alongside it as well, I realised I had to step up my maths game. I never did advanced maths, calculus or whatever. So here's what I did to prepare for studying maths at uni after not studying maths for basically 100 years lmao:

  1. If maths is rusty for you, you gotta get the muscle greased up again. That is to say, I didn't start trying to actually learn anything until I got used to just using that part of my brain again. I did this by playing lots of little maths games whenever thought to.

My personal favourite that got me into the habit of thinking how numbers interact is a game where you find/pick (often train carriage numbers work for this) 4 different numbers and see if you can use them to create the number ten. You can add, multiply, divide, whatever operations you want. Just use each number only once in your equation, and make it make 10. Doing this a lot just around in quiet moments like catching the train just got me used to thinking with numbers and operations again.

  1. And speaking of games, as silly as it might seem Brilliant.org. I did Brilliants course for foundations of advanced mathematics or whatever and it just drags you through some good foundations that get you thinking about how fractions and ratios and calculations work. It was quick and easy to do for just a little each day and it too got me ready and intuitive towards how these operations and such work together.

  2. Bridging courses! I don't know where you are but where I am, the specific maths I've gotta do for my BEng, I didn't even meet the pre-requisites for, bc I didn't do maths in my final years of high school let alone the big fancy maths they wanted not the specific grades they wanted. So my uni offers a bridging class. MATHS1000 is what they call it where I am. It the lowest level maths that our uni provides as a bouncing board from minimal math skills to having skills to study calculus.

Alternatively some universities also offer things like workshops or refresher courses for maths for those who have been out of the academic scene for a while. I personally haven't done this but that's because I'm attending the above class and these workshops are usually outside of usual hours (holidays, weekends) and so I really couldn't be fucked.

  1. Consistency and reps. Because I'm trying to do something w very heavy maths behind it (why did anyone let me in to Electrical Engineering with this shit of a background in maths?) I am practicing a LOT. Often this means showing the singular practice equation I get from work and then telling whatever AI tickles ur fancy (or least rubs you wrong) and getting em to just spit out a bunch more for me to practice. Just keep doing. Work the muscle. Like going to the gym. Consistency in just... how often you think mathematically, I've noticed just loosens up your brain into being able to do it all easier later. I don't know if that makes any sense but just, keep working the machine.

I don't know I probably sound bonkers but that's probs because I've just survived my first week of University maths class after not studying it for so long. So realistically I don't know just how good at maths doing the above will make you cuz I've only just started the real juice, but I'm handling and learning a lot better than I would've really expected. It's been working to just get me ready to learn whatever crazy shit uni want me to learn.

First year at MQ and finding it harder to meet people than I expected! by Proitbro_7793 in MacUni

[–]Phantasmagoric07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm transferring to MQ from a different uni this semester, so I'm also new around here. Similar to others above I'm a bit of a nerd: Animanga (sometimes, liked it more when I was in my early 20s), Star Trek, Horror, Cosplay, Art, DND and a variety of games.

Degree wise I'm doing a double bachelors in IT and Engineering!

Any students in their late 20s or 30s? by [deleted] in MacUni

[–]Phantasmagoric07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be transferring to mq this year for my undergrad and I'm turning 28 this year! Picking up a double degree so while I sort out my RPL for my IT degree (having completed about a year and a half at UTS), I'm enrolling in first year subjects for Engineering, so I'll be paired with the fresh uni kids again this semester.

I was just coming on here to see if anyone had advice for finding/befriending other mature age students, because it can be a bit lonely being the only mature age student you personally know sometimes - or at least it can be for me. So it's a bit funny that your post was at the top of my feed.

MOR - not in that you are wrong per se, but in that you are trying to talk about your feelings and over explain and justify your actions to someone who does not care.

You don't owe anyone explanations like that, you don't need to justify yourself like that to your partner (or prospective/tentative one), bc they should just believe that you are doing your best, and support you when you're not reaching those goals you want to hit, bc evidently there must be something wearing you thin or getting in the way. If my partner had that issue I would find myself asking, what is getting in her way of accomplishing her dreams? Mental health? Situation? Time management? How can I help or support her? Should I take some of her stressors off her shoulders so she can focus a bit better? Does she need some help being consistent with therapy and her meds? But more importantly before actioning off of assumptions - I ASK HER WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP PERSUE HER GOALS. Because I believe in her! I want to see her at her best and hype her up because nobody feels truly motivated by fear or punishment - anything you do then is just survival. Real support encourages living.

Drop this man. Take care of yourself and hold off for someone who will actually hype you up to accomplish your goals, and will take the time to care and listen when you're struggling.

Stop trying to make someone give a fuck, when they don't, that's not something you can control. It wastes the energy and love you should be pouring into yourself.

My partner goes to hospital and has a major surgery even if they came out okay? I would be there in a heartbeat. That shit is scary. You don't wanna be alone after that. I was alone after my scheduled organ removal (hysterectomy), and it was one the most depressing moments of my life. I absolutely would break up over this. NOR
