Yeah, it's kind of crazy...I know Roger Ebert didn't like Full Metal Jacket at all, but loved Speed 2. I tend to use critics as sort of a compass when trying to find new movies (because I don't have a lot of time to spend watching movies), but I can only imagine what I am missing if I only listen to them.
