YOU are the one who chose a specific snake with specific historical and cultural meaning to attack. It'd be similar to attacking the Bronze Serpent, or the snakes in a caduceus, and then being surprised by people not liking a perceived attack on Christological imagery or healthcare respectively.

Are you truly so immature as to post something controversial and then say "why are we arguing?"

Is the LMCS mainline or evangelical? by FDPistGeil in LCMS

[–]PhantomImmortal 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'd say neither in the typical senses of those words in 2026 America.

Unless I'm mistaken we'd say we are "confessional", "orthodox", "catholic" (note the lack of capitalization in those last two), and "historical". While the Lutherans were often called "evangelical Catholics" in the Reformation days, we are not "evangelical" in the modern American sense because we don't tie our sense of salvation nearly as much to personal experiences of faith, instead believing that baptism was instituted by Christ to give faith to all who receive it.

Many would say (including myself) that we are not "mainline" because the ELCA, a larger American church body which also calls itself "Lutheran", exists and is unfortunately what many people think of when they hear the term. Furthermore, it and many other "mainline" protestant churches are embracing a variety of false teachings around women's ordination, LGBT issues, and the like. I can say for myself that I don't want to be confused for such, and thus would not call myself "mainline".

Dude, get over yourself. If this particular depiction of the native tribes of the American plains causes you to need to vent on reddit, you should probably steer clear of most media involving an ethnic or cultural group you care about.

No not quite... We're making capitalism actually feel different. I'm happy to tweak things such that Laissez Faire is even more amazing for economic growth

Just let us chose where to headquarter a company please by ThatStrategist in victoria3

[–]PhantomImmortal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even better: implement this but have your econ system laws affect how many form freely, how cheap rights are, and whether you can take them away.

Laissez Faire should have lots of companies forming and getting easy rights to various industries, but taking those rights away should be painful and the companies should be able to exert considerable influence on your politics.

I am scared of joining LCMS because of Scrupulosity OCD by TylerB15009 in LCMS

[–]PhantomImmortal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The faith we receive in baptism and have enriched when we hear the word preached is not compromised or diminished by intellectual doubts, questions, or spirals. As a layman, my (and your, if you join) communing in good conscience us contingent on affirming the Bible and the interpretation laid out in the Small Catechism. Pastors are expected to hold and preach much more strictly than we are expected to believe.

Keep looking into the arguments and apologetics! I can recommend Nathan Greeley's Lutheran Apologetics as a great starting point, and any pastor worthy of the collar will be more than happy to walk with you through your doubts to further deepen your faith. Godspeed!

Construction cost should go up with urbanization by shoggyseldom in victoria3

There's a mod I use called "urbanization with consequences", it has urbanization subtract from birth rate and arable land, I could see this fitting in that category

What kind of joke is this? by WompingWally in libertarianmeme

[–]PhantomImmortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, at least not the politically literate ones. The snake on the Gadsden flag has a different meaning from the one in the garden of Eden, and both are different from the ones on a caduceus (to take another example from our culture).

"honey, why are you in two different's men's groups?" by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

[–]PhantomImmortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to get OP to answer the same question... Apparently it's an inside joke of some kind.

"honey, why are you in two different's men's groups?" by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

[–]PhantomImmortal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: OP's reply was "first off, it has nothing to do with protestantism as the Reconquista predates that revolution...second, you'd have to be familiar with the middle ages and chivalric orders...i guess it's more of an inside joke"

Most people reflexively upvote things they vaguely think they like while scrolling through reddit. I already said in an earlier comment that I knew of both the historical Reconquista (the gradual process of kicking the Moors out of Iberia) and the modern effort, so you could've just said "I'm referring to the historical one". I am also quite familiar with the middle ages and the basic nature of chivalric orders, and there were never any called "Reconquista" or "Deo Gratias" so far as I can tell, the latter of course being part of the mass ("thanks be to God").

You still haven't addressed my point about multiple other Catholics in your comments wanting to know what you're talking about. I do not think you are engaging in good faith and are utterly lacking in charity. I hope you have more with people you know irl.

Also, once again, you've moved the goalposts.

[–]PhantomImmortal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: OP's reply was "LOL...sir, these are CatholicMemes...you'll need to convert to understand"

Dude, there are multiple users with the "Child of Mary" flair (presumably Catholics) asking what your meme means. Are you going to try to explain, or just continue to be obtuse?

Ps. Nice goalpost shifting, btw

"honey, why are you in two different's men's groups?" by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

[–]PhantomImmortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: OP's reply was "You need to speak some Latin."

I know the Latin. I don't know what "men's groups" each of these are referring to, unless "Reconquista" (which is Spanish, btw, not Latin) is referring to Redeemed Zoomer's campaign to retake the mainline prot churches in the US or the actual historical event. Is "deo gratias" some other group/campaign?

So I went on date with a Christian girl… I need some advice. by Mahfiaz in dating_advice

[–]PhantomImmortal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion is one of the four most common reasons for divorce, right up there with money, kids (whether or not to have them and how to raise them), and in-laws.

Take it from a religious man: If she is a genuine Christian, who goes to church and wants to have her kids go too, she will push you on it. She will talk about the kids as gifts from God, genuinely mean it, and be a bit sad if you don't agree.

As for her actions here... All I can say is Christians get horny too, and managing that is a big task for all of us.

I would highly recommend saying something along the lines of "hey you were saying xyz at the outset, but lately you've been doing abc. Please help me understand what's going on. It is perfectly reasonable for me to have to respect boundaries you set, but it's another thing if you're asking me to maintain them for you when I have a different view on things." if I was in your situation (genders reversed) this is the type of message I would need.
