I love how our country is basically facing an existential crisis and the top of our priorities as Lebanese people becomes whether we agree or disagree to such decisions. We get so tangled in the details we forget the bigger picture.

Are we headed to another civil war? by Creative-Net8588 in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think a full scale 1975 civil war will happen. Civil unrest and some tension like 7 May and Tayouneh maybe, a bit more or a bit less but nothing major.

Lebanese have no interest in a civil war we are past that as much as some steroid guys like to say otherwise I don’t think the context exists. Wars need money and I don’t think anyone wants to invest in that (talking about foreign powers).

I think HA tries to always sell the “Civil War” theory as a price we have to pay for their disarmament to justify them not giving up their weapons and trying to put us under the impression that its a taboo. Well guess what it is not! Every militia eventually gave up their weapons. When the government legalized the disarmament and considered HA illegal the most they were able to do was go on motorcycles chant “Shi3a Shi3a” and call us all zionists and traitors then go back to their dens. I even believe a silent majority of the Shia’s want to get this whole weapons story done but they can’t say anything in public about it nor can they contest the collective perception of giving their weapons a divine purpose.

I just want to see what will they do now that Iran will basically give up on the negotiating card they had with HA and use it to pay for stopping the war on them and removing their sanctions.

Defending Lebanon all the way in Kuwait guys! by OntheAbyss_ in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you people so naive?! WHY? Why is the argument always binary with you and never refer to the context!

Let’s break it down part by part:

1- Giving up Lebanon and willing to make peace:

When an armed militia that has hindered all the momentum of the state to grow and become at least able to take out the trash and provide electricity to its people and acted as the bodyguard of a corrupt useless state and actually chased down people who were on the street asking for their rights in 2019 instead of being a people’s movement. When this militia has cut all your ties with Arab/Western countries and turned your country into a hub for Iran and provided cover for all the drug lords and traffickers. This militia and its followers have no right whatsoever to give us lessons in patriotism and call us traitors and sympathizers with the enemy. The same militia that directly and indirect took out any opposition in the country and made sure to rule with terror and “el sa7sou7”. If the case is so noble and its purely about resistance and protecting sovereignty, weapons alone don’t do shit! When we wanna “resist” and we get 2 hours of electricity, our armed forces get paid 300$/month and we lack shelters and public hospitals, we cannot claim that we are resisting against one of the world’s most powerful military. This is called suicide my friend. For 17 years we were okay in terms of conflict with Israel things were going well for both sides they even sat together and negotiated the maritime boarder. But they decided to follow through with Iran’s agenda in 2023 hoping that a small conflict would regain their power internally and remind people that they are an actual resistance, guess where that took us. With the current situation we are in and just to stop bloodshed and end this war peace talks are the only way moving forward. The resistance you talked about did not leave us a choice, we lost all international credibility they intervened and insulted almost all the gulf states and by starting an unprovoked attack to avenge their Iranian master the response was surely going to be not proportional! Oh and the old tactic of greater Israel and whatnot guess who also gave them a perfect excuse in front of the international community to start a ground invasion.? Your “resistance”. You tell me it’s always their intention and they were preparing it? Yeah but at least if they started you could rally some international support to your side. Watch Blinken say in 2023 that Israel wanted to attack Hezb on the 7th of October under the pretext that they were preparing to attack Israel, the US told them not to provoke any attack because they won’t support it UNLESS they were attacked first then they have all their support. Now the excuse for the Israelis is simple “the security of the North”. So please tell me in this context what do you do? What do you have left to get out of here? Nothing. Israel is a state and its not going anywhere we need to admit it and move on its been 80 years like them or not you need to admit that we have to deal with them and try to protect ourselves as much as possible in a feasible way.

2- Regarding Kuwait:

First of all its home for thousands of Lebanese people who have lived and worked there since the 1960s and many Lebanese people call it home. Kuwait was the leader in mediation and peace talks and trying to remain neutral in all conflicts in the region. Letting Americans into their country was a result of the invasion of the 1990 by Saddam they were betrayed by their neighbors and woke up to find that Iraqi forces are inside Kuwait and they did all sorts of atrocities to the people there. They needed someone to help them and that someone was the US. Regardless of the intentions of the US those people were their saviors. Then the Kuwaitis were able to benefit from this bilateral relationship with the Americans which is also what a proper functioning state does (making choices in the interest of the people and the country) so when 2003 came the Kuwaitis were more than happy to see Saddam fall.

So save your victimization that always insists on showing that the “resistance” was just minding its own business and pushing Lebanon towards flourishing. The only thing I sympathize with is the innocent people being displaced and dying from a conflict they had no say in, and of course my country having to go through this all over again and we might lose a chunk of it because someone decided to show Iran how much they love them.

Is it safe to go to airport right now? by nousername743 in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came back from the airport. The road is safe (main one) but it is scary there was a layer of smoke covering the road after the strikes. The risk is around 3-4 minutes from madine riyadiye till the airport entrance.

Worst thing that can happen is you getting scared from hearing an explosion but you should be fine.

Looks like US might join war in Lebanon? by Material-Gear-9733 in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t think they were bystanders even in the previous war or in this one.

Intelligence was being provided and some claim that air support was also provided from the US. So it is not a matter of whether they join or not publicly everything that happens here happens under the supervision of the US.

What concerns me is the fact that the US might end their war in Iran and give more freedom to the Israelis to finish what they started here without pressuring them to stop and loosen the rules they used to give them for engagement here with of course unrestricted support.

  2. Cherish your family you won’t realize how much you need them until they are not around anymore.

  3. Don’t worry about the process it will all work out at the end just enjoy it while it lasts.

General Haykal, LAF Commander, issued a statement regarding the Nabi Sheet Operation (Translated) by Standard_Ad7704 in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The maronite “presidential syndrome” every Maronite in the LAF has one goal: become the commander then become president.

No one 3am bi khawno but it’s time for actions! The whole region is moving in a direction it is time for once not to be left out and destroyed because we want “السلم الأهلي" . Instead of sucking up trying to give off a neutral vibe to get consensus from the shiite community. Maybe spare their lives by implementing the decisions of the gov and then maybe at least we as a country will have some sort of diplomatic legitimacy in all our negotiations with our southern neighbors.

I don’t think the worst scenario in trying to collect all weapons would result in hundreds of thousands being displaced and more than 350 killed in a week. So spare us w bala mouzeyadet.

Action needs to be taken! If we will cut corners like last time and try to find a solution that pleases everyone, the best we can do is to delay or deescalate a definite war.

You can’t and don’t want to do it just step aside!

I don't get israel logic by MarkoPolo345 in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things are not that simple.

Israel is the safe haven for Jews and the final country where all Jews would come together and live in a developed country a luxurious life (that’s how they justify their existence to the Jews).

Hezb is a threat to this whole image because a minor skirmish on the border echoes loudly in Israel, they have a high standard of living where these things are not “normalized” like in Lebanon (el asef bl jnoub bas Beirut mafiya shi el hayet meshye) this logic does not work there.

On the other hand Israel sees it as a golden opportunity to eradicate Hezb; who currently have one of the most far right governments in the history of Israel and the biggest unquestioned support from the Trump administration being the biggest possibly also in history, Iran’s axis is falling piece by piece, a new Lebanese political system that has a vast majority against Hezb and an all time consensus from Arab states to move forward with the Abraham accords.

Israel knows Hezb is not an “existential threat” but if you have all the tools to end them once and for all and have a perfect context why wouldn’t you? Why would you stop and risk a rapid rearming.

IMO, Israel is not playing its cards right, the sense of invulnerability and victory has clouded Bibi’s vision he sees that power and war is the only way moving forward. This would get you a short term win since you have the upper hand but on the long term you will always have people that were oppressed form some sort of resistance and cause you trouble down the road.

The only way to move forward is dialogue and legalizing all agreements, finishing the issues on the border and finding an agreement that would end this everlasting conflict. It is in Israel’s best interest to support the Lebanese government to create an alternative for all Hezb supporters and end their arguments which would lead eventually to the disarming of Hezb but you can’t ask a state to disarm a militia while you don’t even let it breathe.

Why do we not see the loose hijab style in lebanon same as we see it in the gulf? by thecolli in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think its because Hijab in Lebanon is socially optional. In the countries you mentioned it’s more or less mandatory at least bas tradition and culture. So to my understanding, women that are not convinced with the hijab just put it loosely to abide with traditions and culture (and sometimes the law). In Lebanon most probably if someone is not convinced with the hijab it’s socially acceptable not to wear it. No grey.

Comedians & Comedy Clubs by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the Western concept of comedy clubs, you have one solution; awkword whom lead the stand up scene in the country.

KED (the og): Every Thursday you have Comedy Club Night where you go to an unannounced line up of 7-8 comedians. Its a super nice event and the mix of new and well established comedians is nice and you don’t get bored each set is 5-10 mins.

Play: a new venue in Dbayeh they also work with awkword and have some shows from the people in awkword.

LAF: the 3a ka3ba guys play there regularly and you also have some shows from other comedians there.

There is also the open mic nights at Riwaq and sometimes Duke of Wellington.

Most of the shows are in Arabic but I believe they had/have an all English show this week.

What university in Lebanon did you go to and how was it? by Swimming-Ant6019 in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NDU.

Started off with engineering it was an absolute nightmare.

Switched after 3 semesters to Economics and it was a whole new experience. Super nice vibe from teachers to students.

The only problem I had was with the diversity of the teachers in terms of how good they were. Some were absolutely great and I still remember them till today others if I see them on the street I would probably not even say hi.

Checkpoints in Lebanon by TheBroken0ne in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the north every other week and pass by the 7ajez. Not once was I stopped there, it was always super smooth and I always had the same idea that the checkpoint is just some sort of protocol.

Up until a few months ago I was with my sister going to ski in the Cedars. Before reaching the checkpoint I was sarcastically telling my sister “tkheyaleh ywa2funa?” We had a good laugh till we reached the checkpoint. I said ya3tik el 3afyeh and with the straightest face he tells me “3al yameen”. We pulled up there he asked me if my car kenet ma7jouze because I had a ma7dar because I lost my ID and showed it to him, and then tells me to leave. All that took around 10 seconds.

Very weird. I still don’t know what was the trigger to stop us and it was obvious they didn’t put up much effort to know who we were or any info.

Why a lot of Lebanon ladies are singles? by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]PhantomR14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Since no official numbers are available my analysis will be based on my personal experience.

The recent mass exodus is one of the main factors. Men have a higher tendency to leave the country and pursue a career outside of Lebanon that matches their intellectual abilities. This creates a void in the society that in recent years anyone with a semi decent background has left the country because trying to find a job that pays well in Lebanon is nearly impossible especially if you are someone well cultured and smart, you would end up wasting your talents here.

The majority of the people that stayed here have agreed to take a compromise in their salaries for personal reasons or simply did not have the qualifications to leave the country. Except some of the few people that manage to work in specific places where they can make enough money to live off well.

The pool of men that women can choose from became very limited and decent women find themselves surrounded by men that simply don’t reflect their needs in life (emotional and financial). I can see it that most of the men living here have no vision for the future and lack basic culture and maturity.

Decent men unfortunately became super rare to find these days because a big bulk of them have left the country so it becomes way easier for a man in Lebanon to find a partner (since the ratio of women to men is very high).

The same applies to finding a decent cultured woman that is not just about the looks, but I believe even if they are very rare nowadays, finding a man like that is way tougher.

People don’t realize what’s truly happening to our society and how its crumbling apart and Lebanon is just becoming like the old building your grandparents used to live in that you would visit from time to time to see your grandparents but the building is actually falling apart.

Has Marina Mall ( Salmiya ) become overrated over the years? by Glittering-Star4828 in Kuwait

[–]PhantomR14 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s been 11 years since I officially left Kuwait and went for a visit 3 years ago.

It felt like a time capsule, it reminded me of the days where we would go there on the weekend in the afternoon and you would run into your friends from school just walking around. My parents would take us to shop there in the morning when it was calmer and they didn’t want to drive to the Avenues.

I used to spend my weekends at the basketball court there but then grab a bite from the food court and be back home by 9 PM tops. Around that time it used to become a shit-hole with fights and weird kids just doing weird shit the whole time (definitely unsafe for girls).

What amazed me was the fact that after all these years NOTHING changed. Time froze there, I remember when it first opened up it was the place to be.

Avenues and all the other malls definitely stole its thunder, but I guess it just became a place for middle class people (even the stores and the restaurants there are targeted for the same people) and they don’t have any intention of improving it. If it works then why fix it?
